Ptarmigan Cirque - Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada
Ptarmigan Cirque is a large bowl between Mount Rae and Mount Arethusa above Highwood Pass in Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada. Access is on good moderate ascent trail to awesome views of surrounding mountains, the Kananaskis Valley and Pocaterra Cirque on the opposite side of Kananaskis Trail (Hwy 40). Highwood Pass is the highest drive-able pass in Canada at 2,206 m (7,239 ft).

We took the family on a nice little hike an hour and a half from Calgary at the summit of Highwood Pass. Highwood Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.206m (7,238ft) above sea level. Located in Alberta, it's the highest paved pass in Canada.

Ptarmigan Cirque is a 4.3 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near Kananaskis Improvement, Alberta, Canada that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from June until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
This is a beautiful hike with such little effort required for stunning views. The short distance and incredible views make a great quick hike good for young children. You will likely see lots of wildlife (squirrels, chipmunks, big horn sheep) with nice small waterfalls and great scenery. This is a fragile alpine area and people should respect that and stay on the trail. It is also advisable to carry bear spray.

Ptarmiagan Cirque is a trail in Kananaskis Country, about 1.5 hours from Calgary Alberta. The hike itself is fairly short, a 4.3 Kilometer loop with an elevation gain of 355 meters. Today I went a little further, 7.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of 369 meters.
The hike features a beautful Alpine Meadow, coming into fall, a creek and waterfalls and spectacular views of the mountains. The trail head is at Highwood Meadows Day Use area and is near the top of the highest paved pass in Canada.
I have upped my game a little bit, buy purchasing some new camera equipment, a new Canon t6i, a gimbal and a few other accessories. I still have my GoPro Hero Session as well.

Ptarmigan Cirque Hike with 70 year olds, Kananaskis
Ptarmigan Cirque in Highwood Pass about 30 minutes south of Mt. Kidd RV park in Kananaskis on Hwy #40. A hike great for almost any fitness level and age. Waterfalls, Boulders, Ptarmigans and Beautiful walls surrounding you from the big peaks of Mt. Rae and Mt. Arethusa.

Cat Creek Falls Hike in Kananaskis | Journey Alberta
In this video I travel out to the Highwood section of Kananaskis to do the Cat Creek Falls hike! It's a relatively short trail, but still offers great views of the valley, a waterfall, and some interpretive signs that talk about the logging and coal mining history of the area. This hike is definitely up there for me as one of the hikes to take friends/family from out of town on, since it's a well rounded hike in terms of what they will see. It's also a family friendly hike too!

Ptarmigan Cirque Hike
This hike is considered one of the best for seeing the Larch trees turning golden in the Kananaskis in autumn. Already starting from the Highwood pass parking lot in the sub alpine, it quickly reaches alpine at the crest of the Cirque. There is an easy circuit trail within the Cirque, but the more adventurous can challenge the peak of Mt. Rae, one of the highest mountains in the region, via a direct path. Hiking at this time of year always provides the potential for snow at higher elevations.

North Buller Pass - Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada
The trail to North Buller Pass is shorter with less elevation but was abandoned in 1981 when the South Buller Pass trail was created. The North Buller trail is still navigable and offers incredible scenery through a spectacular valley. The North and South Buller Pass Loop is an outstanding hiking experience with awesome mountain, lake, and waterfall features. The Buller Burn has created surrealistic and unique scenery.

Trails were mostly snowbound with icy patches from the repeating freeze-thaw of the season.

In this week's new video, I do the hike to Troll Falls, Kananaskis, in the winter to see the frozen waterfalls! A note about doing this hike in the winter, if you plan on hiking and walking around the ice make sure you have some kind of ice grips on your shoes! I saw many people almost fall and get hurt while I was out making this video.

Hiking Opal Ridge (Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada)
Ginni and I hike up Opal Ridge in Kananaskis Provincial Park Alberta Canada. Beautiful hike that would be both of our all time favorite day hikes in Canada. Is quite a grunt to get up it, but the views are worth the effort!
