Beautiful Belize: Ycacos Beach
Ycacos Beach is located along the coast of Belize about 10km southwest of the Monkey River Village and is comprised of approximately 900 hectares (2,200 acres) of uplands and wetlands. The site is surrounded by the Paynes Creek National Park and is also adjacent to the Punta Negra Village with a population of 47 families. The Punta Negra Lagoon and surrounding area, once part of the National Park, was removed from the park in January 2004 and is part of the site. This lagoon issued by local fisherman for fly-fishing tourists and also as a source of water during the dry season.
The Ycacos Beach property and adjacent Paynes Creek National Park is bounded on the east by the Caribbean Sea, and comprised of beaches, forested uplands, wetlands of swamp forests, mangrove and savanna, the productive coastal freshwater Punta Negra Lagoon, and the brackish Punta Ycacos Lagoon which is fed by the coastal wetland system to the west of the property. The site has little topographic variety with elevations between sea level and 3 meters.
The primary wetland vegetation is salt water marsh (juncus) interspersed with palmetto palms and other marsh grasses. Small clusters of red mangrove occur along the southern and western shores. Upland vegetation is primarily coconut palms along the beaches and pine trees and palmetto in the interior upland areas.
The adjacent Punta Negra Village was established in the late 1820’s to early 1830’s by traditional fisherman from Guatemala and Honduras who were attracted to the rich marine and freshwater resources. Historically, the primary income for villagers has been harvesting of coconut oil and seaweed, and fishing. Currently the site and village are only accessible by boat and a road is currently being studied to access to a proposed airport approximately 12 miles away.
Belize is located within Central America and is bounded on the North by Mexico, South and West by Guatemala, and the beautiful Caribbean Sea touches its 174 mile coastline to the East. Geographically, Belize consists of 8,866 sq. miles including 266 sq. miles of islands. It is served daily by major US airlines including American, Continental, U.S. Airways and Delta, flying from major hubs of Miami, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Atlanta, Newark and Los Angeles. The Latin American airline TACA flies to Belize from a number of Central American cities as well as Houston. There are numerous daily domestic flights from Belize’s International Airport to Placencia on Tropic and Maya Island Air with a flight time of approximately 30 minutes.

A Day in San Antonio, Cayo
The San Antonio-Cayo fair has been celebrated since the early 1900s. Despite its long tradition, its vitality had waned a bit. To revitalize this important cultural event, we organised ‘A Day in San Antonio’ by connecting culture, nature, and sports. In 2018, we believe that the fair
cannot remain as “purely cultural”. While culture is fundamental to the vibrancy of our community, our care for our natural environment is key to sustain the services this provides. In this regard, we aimed to connect the importance of the Elijio Panti National Park (the Park) to the quality of life of the people of San Antonio. The Park provides water for our community, along with other services—services that need to be protected. Here's a recap of the event with special highlight on the Dr. Elijio Panti Cycle Race. Enjoy!
