Most of the island is part of the Rakiura National Park, with the population largely confined to the small township of Oban.

-- About this video --
After an awesome day carving our own jade in Stewart Island, it is now evening in Oban, Stewart Island and time to catch our flight right across Stewart Island and Rakiura National Park! We are picked up by the team of Stewart Island Flights and driven to Oban’s air strip!
We hop into a small 10-seater plane and depart for our Stewart Island flight right across Stewart Island. The flight only lasts about 6 minutes but we lap up the views of the Rakiura National Park before doing a beach landing on Mason Bay. Here, our pilot points us in the right direction to hike to in order to make our way to the Mason Bay Hut where we are going to be staying the night.
Mason Bay on Stewart Island is a stunning and isolated beach well known for having a few kiwi sightings on the beach and around the Mason Bay Hut, so as soon as we settle into the Mason Bay Hut, we are back outside to do some kiwi spotting in Stewart Island.
Although we can hear kiwi birds on Stewart Island all around us, we are unsuccessful in spotting them tonight. However, we do catch an amazing sunset and watch the starts on Mason Bay.
Tomorrow, we are going to be hiking across Stewart Island from Mason Bay to the Freshwater River where hopefully our Stewart Island kiwi spotting will be more successful then.
So what do you think of taking a scenic flight in Stewart Island? Would you fly over Stewart Island and stay in the Rakiura National Park? LUK in the comments.

Visiting Oban and Stewart Island
In October 2018, I went with my sisters and some friends to do the Rakiura Great Walk in Stewart Island, as well as visiting Ulva Island too. This is footage that was taken from the rest of the trip, mainly looking around Oban, where we saw a lot of kaka and tui birds. We also had a look in the Oban Presbyterian Church, which has a bit of a Norwegian story!
Oban is the main settlement on Stewart Island (Rakiura), the southernmost of the main three islands of New Zealand. Oban is located on Halfmoon Bay, and has aircraft connections with Invercargill and a ferry service to Bluff. The settlement was named after Oban in Scotland, (An t-Òban in Scottish Gaelic, meaning The Little Bay), due to the strong influence Scottish settlers had in the south of early colonial New Zealand. According to the March 2001 New Zealand census, the island's permanent resident population was 387 at that time. Newer estimates put the population at around 400.

NZ push-bike Tour - Day 1 -two 57 yo chicks arriving at Stewart Island.mov
On Feb 29th 2012, my school friend Jen and I left Invercargill in freezing cold driving rain for Stewart Island, with a basic picture of hitching a ride on a fishing boat to Stewart Island...tho they weren't expecting us :-/ We arrived cold and wet and in shock I think, and not a fishing boat in sight. I wanted a warm cosy cafe to pick my spirits up out of the gutter but Jen had headed for the ferry building so I followed. Hows this...the ferry (Real Ferries) was ready to leave (next ferry was a 5 hour wait!!!!!) and after hearing our story about promoting health and fitness in the aging baby boomers and fundraising for the Make a Wish Foundation, they gave us a free ride over and then back the next day...thanks Jason :-)

No hunting just the flights. There wasn't a lot on Youtube to show west coast blocks. Hence the video is quite long to give a taste of the various hunting blocks from the air. It might help trip planning.
Worth the trip just for the flights.....
