DOPPIO MISTO ASTI
RED AND BLACK
Barbera d´Asti d.o.c.g. 2011 Collection
Classic grapes from Piedmont.
Winemaking/ The Vineyards:
Handpicked grapes are brought to the winery in small boxes, where they are destemmed and crushed. After temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation, performed in stainless steel tanks on the skins to extract the best fruit and color, malolactic fermentation takes place. After 6 months of ageing in small French barrels of second and third passage, the wine is finally bottled.
Tasting Notes:
Brilliant red in color, Barbera has a long, ripe, fruity and vinous aroma with intense hints of red fruits (red currant and raspberry) and violet. To the taste, it is typically crisp with soft tannins. Elegant lingering dry finish.
Food Pairing:
Excellent with rich meat dishes, salami and tasty soup.
Uncork at least one hour before serving.

The Langhe Piedimont, Italy - Drone Aerial View
The Langhe Piedimont, Italy; Langa is from old dialect Mons Langa et Bassa Langa) is a hilly area to the south and east of the river Tanaro in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont, northern Italy.
It is famous for its wines, cheeses, and truffles—particularly the white truffles of Alba. The countryside as it was in the first half of the 20th century features prominently in the writings of Beppe Fenoglio and Cesare Pavese, who was born there, in Santo Stefano Belbo. On 22 June 2014, Langhe were inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list for its cultural landscapes, outstanding living testimony to winegrowing and winemaking traditions that stem from a long history, and that have been continuously improved and adapted up to the present day. They bear witness to an extremely comprehensive social, rural and urban realm, and to sustainable economic structures. They include a multitude of harmonious built elements that bear witness to its history and its professional practices. Its vineyards constitute an outstanding example of man’s interaction with his natural environment. Following a long and slow evolution of winegrowing expertise, the best possible adaptation of grape varieties to land with specific soil and climatic components has been carried out, which in itself is related to winemaking expertise, thereby becoming an international benchmark. The winegrowing landscape also expresses great aesthetic qualities, making it into an archetype of European vineyards.

Cittadella di Alessandria - Italian abandoned military fort from 1700
The Cittadella of Alessandria (Italian: Cittadella di Alessandria) is a star fort and citadel in the city of Alessandria, Italy. It was built in the 18th century by the Kingdom of Sardinia, and today it is one of the best preserved fortifications of that era. It is one of the few fortifications in Europe still in their original environment, since there are no buildings blocking the views of the ramparts, or a road that surrounds the ditches.
On 10 March 1821, during the Piedmont insurrection, the blue, red and black tricolor of the Carbonari was raised on the Cittadella's bastions by Colonel Ansaldi. This was the first use of a tricolor flag in the history of Italy.
The fortress lies across the river Tanaro in the north-west side of the city of Alessandria. The site is one of the lowest in the Piedmont region with an altitude of about 90 metres (300 ft) above sea-level.
Since its foundation, 1168, the town of Alessandria was always meant to be a border town with a strategic-military vocation. From the 14th century has joined the Visconti of Milan against Monferrato and Asti, with the Sforza then in the 15th century, and consequently under the Spaniards rule after, throughout the 17th century.
The construction of the fortress began immediately after the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The treaty handed ownership of the Citadel from the Spaniards to the House of Savoy. A massive fortification project followed, during which much of Alessandria's town-planning were changed to bolster the fortress's defenses.
In order to meet the needs of defense of the new state of Savoy, it was decided to build a massive fortress designed to function as a barrier of military transits traveling along the Road of Flanders, the ancient Spanish military road that connected the harbors of Genova, Savona and Finale Ligure with the Netherlands.
The Citadel plan was commissioned by King Vittorio Amedeo II and effectively built, in 1732, by King Charles Emmanuel III. The project's architect was Ignazio Bertola. The fortress is a six-star hexagon shaped structure.
The Citadel was built entirely at the expense of the ancient quarter of Borgoglio (or Bergoglio) provoking strong urban revolution. It was completed in its main components in the forties of the 18th century while inside the fortified hexagon the buildings of the civilians were gradually demolished to make way for new military quarters and the inhabitants were forced to relocate, replaced by a garrison ever more numerous.
The result is an immense fortress which extends over 74 hectares (180 acres) whose longer side is parallel to the axis of the river. The Citadel is a perfect example of modern fortress composed of six bastioned fronts supplied with cavalieri crossed by tunnels and casemates. The fortress is surrounded by a wide moat, in connection with the Tanaro river through flooding tunnels, scheduled to be flooded by the waters of the river, and protected by tenaglioni, ravelins, counterguards and ridottes.
The entrance is by a long stone bridge that leads to a large area surrounded by multi-storey buildings arranged along the axis of the ancient quarter, all protected by resistant embankments constructed between 1749 and 1831.
The Cittadella has been Italy's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2006.

Siena Ristorante Toscana, Austin TX - Dinning Out with Great Taste Austin
- If your looking for great Italian dining experience that goes beyond the food, Siena is one of my top recommendations. With authentic ingredients and an American meat and potatoes twist on some famous dishes, Siena Ristorante is anything but your typical red sauce Italian restaurant. With their exquisite decor and the fire burning in their open fireplace, it makes for a perfect romantic dining get away. The inside is so breathtaking, it makes you feel as though you are in a serene farmhouse in Italy. My two favorite pasta dishes on the menu hands down are the Pappardelle al Cinghiale, and the Taglierini al Funghi. The Pappardelle is fresh pasta with wild boar ragu and is out of this world. You can taste a hint of the Chianti wine that they infused during the cooking process which is absolutely delicious. This fantastic dish would blend well with one of their Chianti wines. If you're new to blending wines and dishes, ask your waiter for his or her recommendation. The Taglierini al Funghi is fresh pasta with cremini mushrooms, shallots, Grana Padano (Italian cheese) and black truffle butter. Wow, this dish is bursting with flavor. If you like mushrooms, you'll love this rich buttery flavor with just the right amount truffles and mushrooms. I crave this entrée! I also was very excited when I tried their 32oz Angus Porterhouse grilled with sea salt, black pepper and extra virgin olive oil, served with sautéed spinach and rosemary roasted potatoes. This beef was the most tender beef I've had in a long time and just melted in my mouth. This entrée is recommended for two because it's so big and definitely a must eat. If you love Italian food as much as I do, you'll have to put Siena Ristorante Toscano at the top of your list for your next night out. Known for exceptional ingredients, a fantastic wine cellar and a warm, inviting atmosphere, Siena is always an excellent choice for great, hearty, Tuscan Italian cuisine. They really bring Italy to Austin! See you there!
