Kolín - Central Bohemia - Explore Czech Republic with Nick Forrow
Kolín is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, 55 kilometres east from Prague, lying on the Labe (Elbe) River. Rich archaeological discoveries from the town and its surroundings show that this place was settled long before it is stated in extant written records.
In the regional museum we can find numerous relics commemorating all known settlements in Bohemia. There used to be ancient crossroads of three important trading roads formed as early as in the Roman Empire. The presence of Slavs can be proved even in the 6th century BC. A lot of discoveries of fortified places and burying-places are the evidence of dense population in this area in 9th and 12th centuries. The first written parchment mentioning Kolín dates back to 8th September 1261. In 1437 Bedřich of Strážnice built a caste on the site of a ruined monastery, the castle was afterwards rebuilt into a chateau. Many privileges awarded by Charles IV and Wenceslas IV supported the town development and wealth. At that time, Kolín belonged to the most prosperous towns of the Bohemian kingdom. The biggest humiliation and poverty came during the Thirty-year War which almost ruined the town.
Kolín (in German: Kolin, also Köln an der Elbe) is a regional town in the east of Central-Bohemia, situated on the river Labe. Kolín has more than 30 000 inhabitants, the area of the town is 35 km², the average altitude 220m. The town is an important rail junction. The main industry comprises chemical, car, engineering, food-processing and polygraphic branches.
The name Kolín probably comes from an old-bohemian word kolitiʺ, which means to drive stakes. The name is connected with the location of Starý Kolín in a frequently flooded area on the junction of the Klejnarka and Labe. People used to fix the ground using wooden stakes. Afterwards a more suitable location was chosen for the developing trading settlement. The new location was on an elevated place, 7 km westwards. The new village (and later on the royal town) kept the name of the original settlement.
There are also other less likely explanations of the name origin. The name could be also derived from its location on an elevated place, a hill - colinus in Latin, which is in disagreement with the existence of Starý Kolín, though. According to another theory, the Latin word Colonia is connected with the arrival of German colonists to Bohemia.

Hranice, Czech Republic
There are three towns called Hranice in the Czech Republic. This one is in Moravia, in the east and in German was called Weißkirchen or Mährisch Weißkirchen when it was part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. My arrival was by accident, it was part of a jouney, a route I was following and I decided to stop and see. However it is well worth planning to go there. The main square is dominated by an enormous church but the view from the river rather than being dominated by a church, is dominated by a synagogue which survived the Nazi occupation by having the fortune to be designated a museum in 1940.
The town grew in the nineteenth century thanks to small industry, in particular the production of water pumps. The town had the largest factory for water pumps in Austria-Hungary.
The first Jews came at the beginning of the 17th century, receiving in 1637 the right for a self-governed Jewish quarter, around the present Janáčkova street (previously called Jew's street - ut. Židovská). Besides those 17 houses, they were not allowed to purchase houses elsewhere. The community reached 802 people in 1857, which was one eighth of the population of the town.
You can see more about the town in the film!

České dráhy (ČD) or Czech Railways is the main railway operator in the Czech Republic. In 2010 its consolidated revenues reached CZK 41.0 billion (€1.6bn, $2.1bn). Revenues from passenger transport amounted to CZK 18.7 billion (65% transfer payments from the government, 25% intra-state transport, 10% international transport), revenues from freight transport operated by subsidiary ČD Cargo amounted to CZK 11.8 billion, revenues from traffic control invoiced to state-owned railway infrastructure operator SŽDC amounted to CZK 5.2 billion. With thirty-eight thousand employees ČD Group is the largest Czech company by the number of employees.
The company was established in 1993, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia as a successor of the Czechoslovak State Railways. It is a member of the International Railway Union (UIC Country Code for Czech Republic is 54), Community of European Railways and the Organization for Railways Cooperation (Asia and Europe).
Until 1 July 2008, České dráhy was the biggest employer in the Czech Republic. After experiencing regular losses and requiring government subsidies, the railway reported its first ever profit in 2007 although it receives government subsidies. Attempts to make it more efficient are currently ongoing and a recent plan to move passenger transport to an independent subsidiary was approved by the Czech government in January 2008.
ČD operates trains; fixed infrastructure (such as tracks) is managed by SŽDC. In December 2010, the Czech government proposed bringing SŽDC and ČD together in a single holding company. The government has also changed the subsidies available to ČD and SŽDC.
ČD Cargo, the cargo subsidiary, mainly transports raw materials, intermediate goods and containers. As of 2009, it is ranked in the top five largest railway cargo operators in Europe.

Kutná Hora - Central Bohemia - Explore Czech Republic with Nick Forrow
Kutná Hora (German: Kuttenberg) is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, located 55 km east of Prague.
The town began in 1142 with the settlement of Sedlec Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Bohemia, Sedlec Monastery, brought from the Imperial immediate Cistercian Waldsassen Abbey. By 1260, German miners began to mine for silver in the mountain region, which they named Kuttenberg, and which was part of the monastery property. The name of the mountain is said to have derived from the monks' cowls (the Kutten) or from the word mining (kutání in old Czech). Under Abbot Heidenreich, the territory greatly advanced due to the silver mines which gained importance during the economic boom of the 13th century.
The earliest traces of silver have been found dating back to the 10th century, when Bohemia already had been in the crossroads of long-distance trade for many centuries. Silver dinars have been discovered belonging to the period between 982–995 in the settlement of Malín, which is now a part of Kutná Hora.
From the 13th to 16th centuries, the city competed with Prague economically, culturally, and politically. Since 1995, the city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 1300, King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia issued the new royal mining code Ius regale montanorum (also known as Constitutiones Iuris Metallici Wenceslai II). This was a legal document that specified all administrative as well as technical terms and conditions necessary for the operation of mines.[4] The city developed with great rapidity, and at the outbreak of the Hussite Wars in 1419 was the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague, having become the favourite residence of several Bohemian kings. It was here that, on January 18, 1409, Wenceslaus IV signed the famous Decree of Kutná Hora, by which the Czech university nation was given three votes in the elections to the faculty of Prague University as against one for the three other nations.
In 1420, Emperor Sigismund made the city the base for his unsuccessful attack on the Taborites during the Hussite Wars, leading to the Battle of Kutná Hora. Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) was taken by Jan Žižka, and after a temporary reconciliation of the warring parties was burned by the imperial troops in 1422, to prevent its falling again into the hands of the Taborites. Žižka nonetheless took the place, and under Bohemian auspices it awoke to a new period of prosperity.
Along with the rest of Bohemia, Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) passed to the Habsburg Monarchy of Austria in 1526. In 1546, the richest mine was severely flooded. In the insurrection of Bohemia against Ferdinand I the city lost all its privileges. Repeated visitations of the plague and the horrors of the Thirty Years' War completed its ruin. Half-hearted attempts after the peace to repair the ruined mines failed; the town became impoverished, and in 1770 was devastated by fire. The mines were abandoned at the end of the 18th century. In this town, Prague groschen were minted between 1300–1547/48.
The centre of Kutná Hora and Sedlec Abbey with its famous ossuary are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the most important buildings in the town are the Gothic, five-naved St. Barbara's Church, begun in 1388, and the Italian Court, formerly a royal residence and mint, which was built at the end of the 13th century. The Gothic Stone Haus, which since 1902 has served as a museum, contains one of the richest archives in the country. The Gothic St. James's Church, with its 86-metre tower, is another prominent building. Sedlec is the site of the Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady and the famous Ossuary.

KAYAKÖY - Ghost Town: 2nd Old Church (Upper Town) (Region Fethiye / Turkey)
arierKayaköy (Greek: Λεβισσι, Levissi or Greek: Καρμυλησσός, Karmylissos, although modern English usage seems to be Karmylassos) is a village 8 km south of Fethiye in southwestern Turkey where Anatolian Greek speaking Christians lived until approximately 1923. The ghost town, now preserved as a museum village, consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches which cover a small mountainside and serve as a stopping place for tourists visiting Fethiye and nearby Ölüdeniz.
It was built on the site of the ancient city of Carmylessus in the 18th century. It experienced a renewal after nearby Fethiye (known as Makri) was devastated by an earthquake in 1856 and a major fire in 1885. After the Greco-Turkish War, Kayaköy was largely abandoned after a population exchange agreement was signed by the Turkish and Greek governments in 1923. Many of the buildings were damaged in the 1957 Fethiye earthquake.
Its population in 1900 was about 2,000, almost all Greek Christians; however, it is now empty except for tour groups and roadside vendors selling handmade goods and items scavenged from the former village. However, there are a selection of houses which have been restored, and are currently occupied.
An abandoned Church
Today Kayaköy village serves as a museum and is a historical monument. Around 500 houses remain as ruins and are under the protection of the Turkish government, including two Greek Orthodox Churches, which remain the most important sights of the ghost town. There is a private museum on the history of the town. In the middle of the village stands a fountain source from the 17th century. Kayaköy was adopted by the UNESCO as a World Friendship and Peace Village.
Jahrhundert. Kayaköy wurde von der UNESCO als World Friendship and Peace Village deklariert.

Automotive
The automotive sector is the backbone of Czech industry. It is also a traditional branch of the Czech Republic’s economy, with roots stretching back to the late nineteenth century, when brands such as Laurin and Klement “- today’s Škoda Auto – “ and Tatra came into being. The Czech Republic’s competitive advantages are its industrial tradition, location and highly developed supplier base. In addition, in the past several years the sector has been rejuvenated by massive investment projects undertaken by major global carmakers, thus strengthening its position in global markets.
Silver Arrow and Hurvínek in Pardubice / Stříbrný Šíp a Hurvínek v Pardubicích
On 29th and 30th April the season of the Museum of public transport in Pardubice started. For this occasion were sent:
The motor coach M 260.001 “Silver Arrow”
The motor coach M 131.1133 “Hurvínek”
The motor coach M 260.001 (new marking 825.001) is a long-distance motor coach designed for Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). It should be a competitor of Tatra's legendary motor coaches class M 290.0 but ČKD couldn't produce other coaches due to the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany in 1939. The only coach M 260.001 was nicknamed “Silver Arrow”.
The coach successfully passed technical tests on the railway track Prague – Kolín on 17th February and reached its speed record 130 km/h (80 mph). Due to insufficient brake system the maximum speed of the coach was limited on 90 km/h (56 mph). On 14th March 1939 ČSD organized a presentation for news on the route Pardubice – Prague (about 100 kilometres or 60 miles), which the “Silver Arrow” did in 68 minutes. The next day Germany occupied Czechoslovakia and the area of the current Czech Republic became Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The “Silver Arrow” was stopped as an unfinished project. The coach was authorized for service in 1941 but it couldn’t be in the regular service because of the lack of fuel in the Second World War. After the end of the war the “Silver Arrow” was partly given to regular service but in 1953 was finally stopped. The coach became a stock of material, the interior was destroyed, and motors were sold to Musical Theatre in Karlín. In 1978 the motors disappeared completely.
In 2001 a slow reconstruction of the “Silver Arrow” started in Chomutov depot. Before the reconstruction the coach was almost destroyed by vandals. Its new life started on 15th March 2016.

These coaches were made as a basic recovery of the ČSD rolling stock after the Second World War. Motor coaches class M 131.1 were operated in the whole Czechoslovakia, in case of failure of the motor coaches class M 262.0 they were used for long-distance services, sometimes even for cargo trains. The wagons class Clm and CDlm were made for them. The coaches were replaced by the new motor coaches class M 152.0 (new marking 810) since 1976 and regular service finished in 1984.
