Pilsen, European Capital of Culture 2015: More Than Pilsner Beer
Plzeň, evropské hlavní město kultury 2015: Více než plzeňské pivo
Plzeň, or Pilsen, is the fourth biggest city of the Czech Republic, and 2015 it was a European Capital of Culture. Pilsen is worldwide known for its beer, the Pilsner beer, created by Josef Groll in 1842. But the city has much more to offer than a visit at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery.
(cf. )
On the huge main square, the náměstí Republiky, is the St Bartholomew's Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Bartoloměje), a Gothic style temple from the late 13th century with the tallest church tower (102.6 m) in the Chech Republic. There is access to the tower platform that offers an excellent view to the square and the city.
On the North side of the main square is the Renaissance town hall (Renesanční plzeňská radnice) with a lot of sgraffitos on its façade; on the South side is the marionette museum (Muzeum loutek), where a lot of puppets are shown on several floors, including the national hero Jan Žižka or Faust and Mephisto. There is also a puppet theatre in the city which has a long tradition of puppetry (Josef Skupa and Jiří Trnka were puppeteers here).
Another monument is the Moorish Revival style Great Synagogue (Velká synagoga), built in 1893, one of the few synagogues that remained intact after the destruction of all Jewish life during the Nazi occupation. Today it is mainly used as a concert hall and photographic exhibition hall.
Last but not least there is a brewery museum (Pivovarské muzeum) that shows a lot of ancient machines and tools for brewing. From there visitors also have an access to a part of the historic underground tunnel and cellar network below the old town, one of the longest systems of this kind in Central Europe.
Pilsen, Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2015: Mehr als Pilsner
Pilsen, tschech.

Plzeň is Bohemia's second largest city and the Czech Republic's fourth. About halfway between Prague and Munich in West Bohemia, Plzeň was founded at the end of the 13th Century on the old trade route from Passau to Prague and retains its original Gothic street plan to the present day.
In the middle of the huge open central square stands the Gothic cathedral of St Bartholomew, boasting the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic (102 metres). Lining the edge of the square are some impressive three and four storey town houses including the sgraffito-covered renaissance town hall.
The grid of streets surrounding the square are home to historic attractions such as thebrewery museum, the entrance to the Plzeň underground and the Franciscan monastery complex. Just outside the line of the old town walls to the west are the Great synagogue and the fascinating Patton memorial and museum that tells the story of Plzeň and West Bohemia's liberation by American troops at the ends of WWII.
Plzeň is not an especially green city, but outside the historic centre there are five rivers. On a short visit the three names to remember are Radbuza, Mže and Berounka. The Radbuza flows from the Šumava mountains in the south through Plzeň to the north, with the historic old town on the left bank and the train station on the right (eastern) bank. The Mže flows from west to east and joins the Radbuza just north of the city centre. From there the combined waters are named Berounka and flow north past Beroun and Karlštejn castle to join the Vltava on the southern outskirts of Prague.
Near the junction of the Mže and Radbuza rivers lies the famous Pilsner Urquell brewery, which is the single attraction that draws most international travellers to Plzeň. The city's old German name is Pilsen and here in 1842 bottom fermented lager was brewed in a commercial quantity for the first time ever. This style of beer became so popular that most of the world's beer is now made this way and Plzeň is considered by many to be the birthplace of modern brewing.

Weekend in Prague 2011

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It is the fourteenth-largest city in the European Union. It is also the historical capital of Bohemia proper. Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava river, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its larger urban zone is estimated to have a population of nearly 2 million. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with warm summers and chilly winters.
Prague has been a political, cultural, and economic centre of central Europe with waxing and waning fortunes during its 1,100-year existence. Founded during the Romanesque and flourishing by the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was not only the capital of the Czech state, but also the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. It was an important city to the Habsburg Monarchy and its Austro-Hungarian Empire and after World War I became the capital of Czechoslovakia. The city played major roles in the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, and in 20th-century history, during both World Wars and the post-war Communist era.
Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th century Europe. Main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall, and Petřín hill. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The city boasts more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits. A modern public transportation system connects the city. Also, it is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University. Prague is classified as a Beta+ global city according to GaWC studies, comparable to Berlin, Rome, or Houston. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination, and the city receives more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009. In 2011, Prague was the sixth-most-visited city in Europe.
Czech Republic Klatovy & Svihof Castle Video by EuroBookings
Klatovy has been a royal town since the 13th century and is one of the
richest Czech towns of the Middle Ages where the main attractions are
catacombs found underneath the Renaissance town hall. Remnants of a huge
medieval fortification system can be seen at the late 15th century Svihof
Castle, dramatically encircled by moats fed by the River Uhlava.
Europe 2018 Episode 07: Pilzen
Dominating Republic Square in the center of town is the Gothic St. Bartholomew's Cathedral. Dating to the late 13th c., the church’s 335 foot high tower is the tallest in the Czech Republic.
The Plague Column in front of the cathedral was erected in 1681, appealing to Mary to protect the town from the deadly disease.
Opposite the cathedral, the Renaissance Town Hall was completed in 1559. Its front facade is decorated with a hand-etched art form known as sgraffiti, depicting Czech rulers and the city emblem.
Nearby is the 13th c. Franciscan Monastery and its Church of the Assumption.
The town is also known for the Pilsner Urquell brewery, originator of the pilsener style of beer back in 1842. We enjoyed some with our lunch at the pleasant Salzmannu Restaurant.

Telc (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Telc in the Czech Republic.
Situated halfway between Prague and Vienna in the south of the Czech Republic, Telč was once an important centre of trade and today is considered to be the country’s most beautiful mediaeval town. In the Great Fire of 1530, all of the city’s timber buildings were burned to the ground and in the years that followed a market was established which added a further vibrant aspect to the Gothic, Renaissance and Early Baroque buildings around it. Each building has a picturesque arcade of approximately the same height, and one to two storey buildings with three arcades line up like pearls on a string. In the mid sixteenth century the town’s former Gothic water castle was the property of the Lord Of Hradec. It was subsequently extended and transformed into a magnificent Renaissance castle. The Golden Hall is the castle’s most imposing room and fills the entire north wing. Its ceiling is decorated with octagonal coffers, masterpieces of the art of wood carving. Telč is an historical treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

LIBEREC:
Liberec is a city in the Czech Republic. Located on the Lusatian Neisse and surrounded by the Jizera Mountains and Ještěd-Kozákov Ridge, it is the fifth-largest city in the Czech Republic.
Settled by German and Flemish migrants since the 14th century until their expulsion after World War II, Liberec was once home to a thriving textile industry and hence nicknamed the Manchester of Bohemia. For many Czechs, Liberec is mostly associated with the city's dominant Ještěd Tower. Since the end of the 19th century, the city has been a conurbation with the suburb of Vratislavice and the neighboring town of Jablonec nad Nisou. Therefore the total area with suburbs encompasses 150,000 inhabitants. This makes Liberec the third-largest city (with suburbs) in Bohemia after Prague and Pilsen.
FRYDLANT CASTLE
In the 13th century the castle was held by the Ronovci House. It was first mentioned in 1278, when the Bohemian king Přemysl Otakar II removed the lordship from the Ronovci and gave it to Rulek of Bieberstein. The nowadays building consists of a Gothic castle with a high tower and a Renaissance chateau. The castle had a museum as early as 1801 and today is one of the most visited in the Czech Republic.

Walking to Prague Castle on a cold and rainy day.
Prague Castle is the official residence and office of the President of the Czech Republic. Located in the Hradčany district of Prague and dating back to the ninth century, the castle has been a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia. The Bohemian Crown Jewels are kept within a hidden room inside it.
The Guinness Book of Records lists Prague Castle as the largest ancient castle in the world.
The history of the castle stretches back to the year 870 with the construction of its first walled building, the Church of the Virgin Mary. The Basilica of Saint George and the Basilica of St. Vitus were founded under the reign of Vratislav and his son St. Wenceslas in the first half of the 10th century.
The first convent in Bohemia was founded in the castle, next to the church of St. George. A Romanesque palace was erected here during the 12th century. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV the royal palace was rebuilt in Gothic style and the castle fortifications were strengthened. In place of rotunda and basilica of St. Vitus began building of a vast Gothic church, that have been completed almost six centuries later.
During the Hussite Wars and the following decades, the castle was not inhabited. In 1485, King Ladislaus II Jagello began to rebuild the castle. The massive Vladislav Hall (built by Benedikt Rejt) was added to the Royal Palace. New defence towers were also built on the north side of the castle.
A large fire in 1541 destroyed large parts of the castle. Under the Habsburgs, some new buildings in renaissance style were added. Ferdinand I built Belvedere as a summer palace for his wife Anne. Rudolph II used Prague Castle as his main residence. He founded the northern wing of the palace, with the Spanish Hall, where his precious art collections were exhibited.
The Second Prague defenestration in 1618 began the Bohemian Revolt. During the subsequent wars, the Castle was damaged and dilapidated. Many works from the collection of Rudolph II were looted by Swedes in 1648, in the Battle of Prague (1648) which was the final act of the Thirty Years' War.
The last major rebuilding of the castle was carried out by Empress Maria Theresa in the second half of the 18th century. Following his abdication in 1848, and the succession of his nephew, Franz Joseph, to the throne, the former emperor, Ferdinand I, made Prague Castle his home.
In 1918, the castle became the seat of the president of the new Czechoslovak Republic. The New Royal Palace and the gardens were renovated by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Renovations continued in 1936 under Plečnik's successor Pavel Janák.
On March 15, 1939, shortly after the Nazi regime strong-armed former Czech President Emil Hacha (who suffered a heart-attack during the negotiations) to hand his nation over to the Germans, Adolf Hitler spent a night in the Prague Castle, proudly surveying his new possession.[2] During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in World War II, Prague Castle became the headquarters of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. He was said to have placed the Bohemian crown on his head; old legends say a usurper who places the crown on his head is doomed to die within a year.[3] Less than a year after assuming power, on May 27, 1942, Heydrich was attacked by British-trained Czech soldiers while on his way to the Castle, and died of his wounds (which became infected) a week later.[4]
After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, it housed the offices of the communist Czechoslovak government. During the Velvet Revolution, Alexander Dubček, the leader of Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring, appeared on a balcony overlooking Wenceslas Square to hear throngs of protesters below shouting Dubček to the Castle! As they pushed for him to take his seat as president of the country at Prague Castle, he embraced the crowd as a symbol of democratic freedom.
After Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the castle became the seat of the Head of State of the new Czech Republic. Similar to what Masaryk did with Plečnik, president Václav Havel commissioned Bořek Šípek to be the architect of post-communism Prague Castle's necessary improvements, in particular of the facelift of the castle's gallery of paintings.

Kroměříž (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kromeriz in the Czech Republic.
The tranquil town of Kromĕříž in the southeast of today’s Czech Republic is a milestone of nineteenth century Habsburgian history. Kromĕříž Castle was the traditional summer residence of the bishops of Olomouc and became a key influence in the town’s cultural life. Typical statues and Baroque and Rococo figures adorn both the walls and niches of the arcades of the castle’s well-tended courtyard. An impressive staircase decorated with large figures leads to the second floor and the Picture Gallery which contains the Apollon And Marsyas by Tizian, one of the great masters of Venetian Renaissance. The Reichstag Hall is the castle’s largest room and is where the history of the nineteenth century comes to life. During the turmoil of the Bourgeois Revolution of 1848, Emperor Ferdinand The First fled from Vienna to Olomouc and the Austrian Reichstag met there and it was also where the first democratic constitution in Europe was discussed and the idea of All State power emanates from the people! Since 1998 the castle and its park and flower garden have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Kromĕříž Castle and gardens are among the most well preserved Baroque examples of a royal residence. Although architecturally in the Viennese style of the K & K monarchy they are notable as a fascinating symbol of democracy

Graz Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Graz in Austria.
Graz is located in the centre of Styria and is the second largest city in Austria, a town that fascinates with its southern flair, magnificent historical buildings and beautiful panoramic views. The city's main landmark is its twenty-eight metre high clock tower that was built in 1561 and is one of the few remains of an old fortress. In order to facilitate a clearer view of the time from the historic part of the town below, the minute hand of the clock was exchanged with that of the hour hand. The first recorded history of Graz dates back to 1128 but earlier archaeological records indicate that it was originally a settlement in 2,000 B.C.But the main architectural focal point in Graz is the Landhaus. Domenico Ell'allio transformed the old meeting hall of Styria's country estates into a typical Renaissance building. Many cultural and historic works of art combine in perfect harmony and thus make Graz a particularly unique and attractive town.
