Renard's Cheese Store & Deli Named Door County Industry of the Year
Renard's Cheese Store & Deli ( is the winner of the Door County Industry of the Year Award. The annual award recognizes a local construction, service or manufacturing business that has made a substantial impact on the community and enjoyed significant accomplishments during the past year.
Renard's Cheese is a family owned and operated business that is now on its third generation of cheesemakers. Over the past 51 years, Renard's Cheese has become an iconic Door County business, and is on a trajectory to successfully build upon that status for many years to come. Though many things have changed throughout the years, their commitment to producing quality, gourmet, and handcrafted cheeses has never wavered.
This precise art has awarded Renard's not only a reputation of great standards but also the ribbons to match. Their award winning Two-Year Aged White Cheddar is one of their best selling cheeses. Over the past several years, they have expanded their product line to include flavor infused cheeses such as; Morel & Leek Jack, Cranberry Jalapeno Monterey Jack, and over 50 other specialty cheeses. One of their newest creations is the Door County Untouchable Cheddar, where they soak their Two-Year White Cheddar in Simon Creek Winery's Untouchable Red Wine for three days.
Today, Ann and Chris Renard are still focused on a proactive approach to running Renard's Cheese Store & Deli, which has been evident in the expansion of their product offerings, their increased national distribution, new sales routes throughout the state and the new retail location that was built this past year. The addition of their 1900 square foot retail store has allowed them to increase their cheese offerings and bring in more local products, as well as add a new deli for their customers to enjoy.
Renard's Cheese Store & Deli of Sturgeon Bay has been averaging 40% growth over the past couple years, which has allowed for many new and exciting additions to the company. In 2010, Renard's Cheese had six employees; today they have 29 year-round employees. Ten of these employees were added this past fall to accommodate the expansion of the new facility as well as production needs. In the months following the grand opening of the new retail store their business increased a remarkable 70%.
Both Ann and Chris are active in the community, and they provide support through the business as well. Since 2003, they have conducted the Carrie Ann Renard Memorial Golf Outing. Carrie Ann Renard was Chris' sister, who was very active in Southern Door School Sports. In honor of her memory this annual fundraiser is held every July and all the proceeds are given to the Southern Door School Booster Club. Renard's Cheese is also participating in Reading Rewards, which is designed to promote reading as well as healthy snacking. Ann and Chris are also very passionate about the services that are provided by Door CANcer, which offers help to local cancer patients.

Millions of longnose sucker larvae in Lily Bay Creek, Door County, WI
Millions of sucker larvae were swimming around in Lily Bay Creek near Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin after the annual spawning migration. Suckers go upstream from the Great Lakes (in this case Lake Michigan) to spawn and then their larvae drift back downstream and mature in the lake. About 10,000 adults produced over 40 million larvae in this stream in 2013.

Electronics, drug collections protect Great Lakes, Earth
The EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge removed a huge amount of electronic waste and pharmaceuticals from eight states.
The goal of the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge was the collecting and recycling of one million pounds of electronics (e-Waste) plus the collection and proper disposal of one million pills.
These goals were exceeded many times over.
A few examples:
---
In Milwaukee, WI: 32 tons of electronic waste and 3.5 tons of pharmaceuticals were turned in.
---
At the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin near Green Bay: Approx. 4 tons of e-waste was collected plus thousands of pounds of other trash cleaned from reservation Tribal members turned in ver 23 pounds of medicines including 100 bottles of pills, more than 25 computers and dozens of related components like hard drives, printers, keyboards and speakers; televisions, radios, DVD players, 12 cell phones and over 100 small batteries.
---
In Traverse City, MI: Over 28,750 pounds (over 12.5 tons) of computers and other e-waste was collected.
---
The electronic waste is recycled, and the pharmaceuticals are incinerated in state-of-the-art EPA -license facilities.
So why is this important?
The old and broken electronics - like computers, cell phones and TVs - contain heavy metals that can leach into the groundwater if dumped into landfills.
The unused pharmaceuticals can end up in your drinking water if they are flushed or poured down the drain.
That's because most wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove chemicals from these pharmaceuticals including hormones, narcotics, seizure medication and many more - that end up back in your drinking water.
In an April 2008 press conference in Milwaukee, EPA and other officials explained why the Great Lakes Challenge and similar projects are important to protect the environment and your health.
Pharmaceutical chemicals are sent back out into the Great Lakes, rivers and other places were people recreate and are the intakes for drinking water.
Studies show that the chemicals are appearing in the nation's drinking water in small amounts - the long term effects are not known - however they have been linked to mutations in fish and other wildlife.
Also - these medicines can be stolen, diverted or accidently ingested by children - if they languish in your medicine cabinet.
Around the country many e-waste and pharmaceutical take back programs have been developed by governments and local businesses.
Please check with your local officials to find out details for your area.
Because every day should be Earth Day.

Door County Day One
So my family has a summer house in Door County Wisconsin that is right on Lake Michigan. My grandma on my mom's side (my only American grandparent) has had this house in her family since the early 1900's and it's really nostalgic for me to be able to come up here again. It's my grandma's 80th birthday so let's celebrate! I am ashamed to say that I have been having too much fun and am therefore very behind on my editing. But the good news is that I will be posting new videos for at least the next three days. Thanks of your patience kids! Much love!
