Rhonegletscher (the Rhone Glacier), Alps, Switzerland 2009
The Rhône Glacier (German: Rhonegletscher/ Valais German: Rottengletscher) is a glacier in the Swiss Alps and the source of the river Rhône and one of the primary contributors to Lake Geneva in the far eastern end of the Swiss canton of Valais. Because the Glacier is located close to the Furka Pass road it is easily accessible.
The Rhône Glacier is the largest glacier in the Urner Alps. It lies on the south side of the range at the source of the Rhône. The Undri Triftlimi (3,081 m) connects it to the Trift Glacier. The glacier is located on the northernmost part of the canton of Valais, between the Grimsel Pass and the Furka Pass and is part of the Oberwald municipality. The Dammastock (3,630 m) is the highest summit above the glacier.
OurTour walk around inside and outside the Rhone Glacier in Switzerland
It's not every day you get to walk inside a glacier, so we jumped at the opportunity to do just that at the Rhone Glacier, just off the Furka Pass in Switzerland.

Rhone Glacier Switzerland in 1983
The Rhone Glacier filmed in 1983 from the Furka Pass, Switzerland. It has been shrinking dramatically over the last 25 years and is hardly beyond recognition when compared to this footage. It is famous for its blue-greyish colour.

Undiscovered SWITZERLAND: The RHONE GLACIER - GOMS Bridge - Furkapass
Switzerland is one of the best countries in Europe to do a road trip. The grand tour takes you along many of Switzerland’s most scenic views and best attractions. One of the nicest parts is the road along the Furkapass from Andermatt to the Rhone Glacier down to the suspension Bridge in Goms. The serpet-like pass road takes you high up to the mountains, where you should consider a few stops to enjoy a great panorama. On the Furkapass itself, mostly you will be able to see the snowmountains, whose tips are still covered during summer. Just a few minutes further down you will arrive at the Rhone Glacier, where the main attraction of this trip awaits you. A few hundred meters from the parking lot lays the magical ice cave inside the Rhone Glacier. What is really amazing about this cave is that you will be standing inside natural ice! However, this wonderful attraction is under threat: Global warming has caused much harm to this glacier, which resulted in an ongoing loss of mass and retreat up to the mountains. Only 100 years ago, the glacier was 1000 meters longer! When I was a kid, the glacier still ranged above the edge, but now in 2019, the glacier is receeded much higher up, leaving behind a lake that should not exist. Thanks to modern technology, parts of the glacier, where the cave is craved into, are covered with UV absorbing blankets, that reduced the melting of the ice by 70%. When visiting this place, it is a good moment to reflect our own behavior and make us think, what we all can do to prevent global warming from getting worse. Next to the Glacier stands this old hotel, which nowadays remains closed, but once used to host many guests who came here to enjoy the massive glacier ranging down far into the valley. It was also shown in James Bond 007 Goldfinger; which has attracted many tourists since. When driving further down into the valley, after roughly 45 minutes, you will arrive in Mühlebach-Fürgangen, where the new instahype “Goms Bridge” stretches above the canyon. It still remains free to visit, which is the reason, why you should consider coming here. Remember! Switzerland is best to visit in early June or after mid-August, as summer is on, but the mass tourism is not.

A short clip from the beautiful Rhone Glacier in the Swiss Alps. It's quite impressive how they try to prevent the ice from melting by covering the glacier with huge cloths.

Grimsel Pass and Rhone Glacier @ Gletsch - September 2017
The Grimsel Pass (German: Grimselpass; French: Col du Grimsel) is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 metres (7,100 ft). The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône.

Swiss Alps 4K | Gletsch - Rhone Glacier | Drone Video | alpenschauen
Beautiful autumn drone-flight in Swiss Alps around Gletsch and the Rhône-Glacier. The Rhône river starts at the glacier-lake on 2208 meters altitude and flows in the Mediterranean Sea about 800 kilometers later.
The valley between Gletsch and the glacier is known as one of the most picturesque places showing its beauty in autumn by its colorful leaves and crystal-clear waters.
When I was a young boy, my parents once guided me up to Dammastock (3630 Meters | 11909 FT). At that time, the glacier's end was still close at the valley's ground and the famous Hotel Belvédère was the starting point of our trip. In meantime, you can't see the glacier anymore from Gletsch, and a huge lake took place to be the source of the Rhône River today.
More the a view scientists fear that most of this breathtaking glacier will disappear within the next 25 years. If that would happen, 2,1 million tons of ice could be lost in just one single generation.
This movie is part of the non-commercial project Alpenschauen which is dedicated to all my friends I have met due to my traveling around the world, especially to all those who could never afford to travel to Europe. By this way, I would love to bring the the Swiss Alpines to their homes abroad.

Swiss Alps | Furka & Grimsel Pass | James Bond Strasse | Mountain Pass| Rhone Glacier
The Furka and Grimsel is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka Oberalp Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and replaced a tunnel at 2100 m.
The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. One curve on the east side of the pass is even named James Bond Strasse. At the sign, there is a lookout point with a small parking area. Visitors can also park next to Hotel Belvédère, close to the top of the pass on the west side, and take the short walk to the Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto. The glacier moves 30-40 meters a year and the 100 m long tunnel and ice chamber can be visited from June when the road opens.
