Rijeka, Croatia! Hostel to Myself, Exploring the City & Tuna Sandwich | Travel Vlog Day 6
Today, I drove from Pula, Croatia to Rijeka, Croatia. I checked in to Happy Hostel and since it was off season, I was the only guest there. Then I walked 10 minutes to the harbor to see the city from the other side. Ended up eating a delicious tuna sandwich and walked around the city center.

RIJEKA
Rijeka is the biggest city of the northern Adriatic Sea and is also the largest Croatian port. With a number of interesting museums and galleries, we visited a very interesting museum of old computers. On the hill above Rijeka there is the biggest sanctuary in Croatia - Trsat. Near Rijeka there is Kastav, a small medieval town that is well maintained to this day.

Rijeka, Croatia - Postcard
Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia. It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 128,624 inhabitants (2011).
The metropolitan area, which includes adjacent towns and municipalities, has a population of 245,054 (2011).
Though traces of Neolithic settlements can be found in the region, the earliest modern settlements on the site were Celtic Tharsatica (modern Trsat, now part of Rijeka) on the hill, and the tribe of mariners, the Liburni, in the natural harbour below. The city long retained its dual character. Pliny mentioned Tarsatica in his Natural History.
The second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (up to World War I) was a period of rapid economic growth and technological dynamism for Rijeka. The industrial development of the city included the first industrial scale oil refinery in Europe in 1882[7] and the first torpedo factory in the world in 1866, after Robert Whitehead, manager of the Stabilimento Tecnico Fiumano (an Austrian engineering company engaged in providing engines for the Austro-Hungarian Navy), designed and successfully tested the world's first torpedo.
The Port of Rijeka is the largest port in Croatia, with a cargo throughput in 2013 of over 9 million tonnes, most of which was oil, general cargo and bulk cargo and 131,310 TEUs. In 2008 the Port of Rijeka recorded 4376 ship arrivals. The port is managed by the Port of Rijeka Authority. The first record of a port in Rijeka date back to 1281, and in 1719, the Port of Rijeka was granted a charter as a free port.

The pedestrian promenade that runs through the old town of Rijeka, Croatia (Fiume in Italian) is lined with cafes, shops, bars and beautiful buildings. It is full of life in every season and is the main gathering place for shopping, dining, and festivals. Follow us through the bustling city market, which is open 7 days a week selling fruits, vegetables, bread, flowers, eggs, apparel, and accessories in booths spanning several blocks. The mint green colored buildings which run through the market sell various meats, delicious cheeses, and fresh fish. Catch a glimpse of the historic yellow building which houses one of four Italian language elementary schools in Rijeka (Scuola Elementare Dolac) and the Italian language high school (Liceo Classico).
Walk through the Roman ruins from the ancient settlement of Tarsatica, on which Rijeka was built in Medieval times, including a Roman gate (arch). Standing tall in the center of the Korzo is the charming clock tower, which marks the spot of an old Roman gate entrance to Tarsatica and now serves as a landmark and passageway to a square with a fountain and my favorite pizza restaurant in all of Croatia, Pizzeria Maslina. Rijeka is host to countless entertaining cultural events throughout the year, and our tour captured the exciting Fiumanka Regatta in the Kvarner Bay. This sailing competition takes place over several days and is complemented by outdoor concerts and a festival featuring traditional Croatian foods and wares. The long Rijeka seawall is the perfect place to enjoy the regatta, an evening stroll and a view of Istria.
Taking a dip in the clear blue waters of the Adriatic sea at the Sablićevo beach is a great way to cool off. Only a short 2.5 km walk from the center of town, this pebble beach is peaceful and clean.
We complete our Rijeka city tour with a walk up the 561 steps to the quaint Trsat Castle, which is a 13th-century hilltop fortress that provides magnificent views of both the Rječina river and the sea.
We hope you enjoy our 4K tour of Rijeka!

RIJEKA - Croatia Travel Guide | Around The World
Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb and Split). It is located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 128,624 inhabitants (2011). The metropolitan area, which includes adjacent towns and municipalities, has a population of more than 240,000.
Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially among Italy, Hungary (serving as the Kingdom of Hungary's largest and most important port), and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries. According to the 2011 census data, the overwhelming majority of its citizens (82.52%) are Croats, along with small numbers of Bosniaks, Italians and Serbs.
Rijeka is the main city of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding (shipyards 3. Maj and Viktor Lenac Shipyard) and maritime transport. Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc, first built in 1765, as well as the University of Rijeka, founded in 1973 but with roots dating back to 1632 School of Theology.
Linguistically, apart from Croatian, the population also uses its own unique dialect of the Venetian language, Fiumano, with an estimated 20,000 speakers among the autochthonous Croats and various minorities. Historically Fiumano served as a lingua franca for the many ethnicities inhabiting the multiethnic port-town. In 2016, Rijeka was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2020, alongside Galway, Republic of Ireland.
Tvornica Torpedo (the Torpedo factory). The first European prototypes of a self-propelled torpedo, created by Giovanni Luppis, a retired naval engineer from Rijeka. The remains of this factory still exist, including a well-preserved launch ramp used for testing self-propelled torpedoes on which in 1866 the first torpedo was tested.
The Croatian National Theatre building. Officially opened in October 1885, the grand theatre building includes work by the famous Venetian sculptor August Benvenuti and ceiling artist Franz Matsch, who collaborated with Ernst and Gustav Klimt.
Svetište Majke Božje Trsatske – the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat. Built 135 m (443 ft) above sea level on the Trsat hill during the late Middle Ages, it represents the Guardian of Travellers, especially seamen, who bring offerings to her so she will guard them or help them in time of trouble or illness. It is home to the Gothic sculpture of the Madonna of Slunj and to works by the Baroque painter C. Tasce.
Trsat Castle, a 13th-century fortress, which offers magnificent vistas from its bastions and ramparts, looking down the Rječina river valley to the docks and the Kvarner Gulf.
Petar Kružić staircase (or Trsat stairway), which links downtown Rijeka to Trsat. The stairway consists of 561 stone steps and was built for the pilgrims as the way to reach the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat.
Old gate or Roman arch. At first it was thought that this was a Roman Triumphal Arch built by the Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus but later it was discovered to be just a portal to the pretorium, the army command in late antiquity.
Rijeka Cathedral, dedicated to St. Vitus.
Palace Modello designed by Buro Fellner & Helmer and built in 1885.
Stadion Kantrida, regarded by many as one of the most iconic and beautiful football stadiums in the world.

Rijeka's Beaches
Rijeka's beaches author: Valter Stojšić
Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the bathing season in Rijeka begins in spring and lasts until late autumn. Two Rijeka beaches, Ploče and Kostanj are the proud owners of Blue Flags, the finest proof of the cleanliness of Rijeka's sea. The sea is clean and blue, the sun is drawn here and the beaches are numerous, diverse, large and noisy, small and secluded, pebbly, concrete, rocky, hidden...
With regard to the city location, Rijeka’s beaches are located to the far eastern and to the far western parts of the city. On the eastern side, at Pećine there are eight beaches, most of which are only a few minutes away from the city centre. On the western part, you can find your ideal beach from Kantrida to Preluk - there are five beaches on Kantrida, and if you do not like sea water you can take a swim and sunbathe in the Kantrida Pools, the largest and most beautiful swimming pool complex in Croatia. There are a whole series of larger and smaller beaches and bays from Bivio to Preluk, which are connected by a promenade with numerous facilities, from catering and sport amenities to parks for children located in the shade of the vegetation. These beaches are ideal for those who, besides sunbathing and bathing, enjoy sporting activities at the seaside too. Thanks to its very specific position and the wind that blows there, Preluk beach is famous and a favourite beach of surfers. Also, smaller, nameless beaches can be found here together with hidden bays and beaches for those who prefer being in a more secluded area. Some of them are only reachable from the sea.
City buses drive to all beaches. The beach can be found just a few minutes’ walk from the bus station and there is free car parking close to all the beaches.

Rijeka Video Guide
Rijeka is located just about one hour outside of the capital city of Zagreb and is the closest town on the Adriatic. With a rich maritime history, the positioning of Rijeka was always very important for the trade and shipping industry. Some of the best museums can be explored here as well as access to nearby islands and the rest of Croatia.
