Welcome to my vlog from Bulgaria! I spend a couple of week living as a Digital Nomad in Sofia and absolutely loved it. We did some amazing activities and of course I filmed them for you! We did the Rila Seven Lakes hike, visited Plovdiv for the weekend, checked out a free food tour in Sofia, saw all the main Sofia sights, and (my personal highlight) went to see the Rila Monastery. Thank you so much for watching, and of course don't forget to subscribe!

I created my blog in 2012 when I was living in America. I was thrifting so much that I wanted to start sharing my outfits online and inspiring other people to look in charity shops. Now it's become all about my Digital Nomad journey and what it's like to be a female nomad.

2 UNESCO SITES - Rila Monastery & Boyana Church | Sofia Bulgaria Travel Vlog
We visit Rila Monastery & Boyana Church, both Unesco World Heritage Sites, on a Traventuria tour from Sofia in Bulgaria...⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
Visiting 2 Unesco World Heritage Sites in one travel vlog didn't seem like it would be possible! (but it is) We'd heard so much about both Rila Monastery & Boyana Church and getting to them both from Sofia, but the public transport in Bulgaria was going to prove a little tricky.
Luckily we found Traventuria Tours, who offer one tour in on the same day of travel. First stop is Boyana Church, only 30 minutes drive from Sofia center. Then off into the Rila Mountains to visit the Rila Monastery - which is possibly one of the most amazing UNESCO sites we've seen anywhere in the world. Check out Traventuria Bulgaria for all the tours they offer here:
As far as tours from Sofia are concerned, this tour to Rila Monastery & Boyana Church in the same day was an absolute winner and saved us hours of research. Monasterio de Rila will always hold a special place in our travel memories, hopefully that comes across in the vlog.

Rila Monastery, Bulgaria
Rila Monastery (Rilski manastir), Bulgaria 2012
The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery (Bulgarian: Рилски манастир, Rilski manastir) is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km (73 mi) south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m (3,763 ft) above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD).

I made this video of our time at Boyana Church and also Rila Monastery. We were unable to get any video inside either the church nor the monastery, out of respect for the posted rules. There is much more to see and we hope you enjoy the video and it gives you an idea of what to expect.

Communist-era Hotel Rila Review, Sofia Bulgaria.Watch Before Staying !!
A fascinating hotel property if you like communist-era hotel and architectural legacy. The Hotel Rila is an amazing location. Super-convenient and cost-effective, the hotel is a bargain. I enjoyed my stay but I love that Brutal-architecture style and old communist era nostalgia. My partner did not like the hotel. Anyway, for a night or 2, it's worth staying here. It's an older hotel so things don't always work well, are not super new and without stain. I might question the fire alarm system but I have no way of knowing that equipment condition.

Rila Monastery (UNESCO/NHK)
Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. A characteristic example of the Bulgarian ...

We stayed in Rila Monastery | World Heritage of Bulgaria????????
Rila Monastery was always in my mind when I was thinking my time in Bulgaria ahead. But until recently I didn't know that you could actually stay in the monastery over night. I had to stay here so I asked my Japanese friend Aimi who I met only a few days ago. I was so impressed by the architecture of the monastery and the residential buildings around it. Especially with the snow, It was so beautiful!! I genuinely recommend coming here anytime of the year ( I personally think it's better in winter cause it's less crowded )
---How to get here ---
By bus
There’s only one daily public bus to Rila Monastery. It leaves at 10:20 from the West bus station (Ovcha Kupel). The bus arrives around 13:00. It leaves to Sofia at 15:00 and is back in the city around 17:30. Return ticket cost 22 BGN (11 EUR) and you buy it from the driver.
By car
Use goggle thank you very much
By hitchhike
put your thumb up and smile and beg for a ride ;)

Hello, I'm Timothy James ( Half Japanese, half British ) and I'm 19 years old. I'm currently on a big journey through the balkans heading to wherever I feel like going ! The reason I travel apart from just the fact that is fun is because it is the best education for me and I learn so much from it. Not just the history and about the places I visit but mainly from the people I meet. I can't explain how much I love meeting new people and widening my world. And I though it would be amazing if I could share that with people... That's why I'm here documenting my journey !!

Spectacular Rila Monastery, Bulgaria
Rila Monastery is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also one of Bulgaria's most important religious and cultural centers. Originally founded in 927, the monastery managed to preserve Bulgarian culture during the 400 years of Turkish rule.
The tower built by Prince Hreylu and old church are all that remains from the Fourteenth Century; everything else was built, burned, rebuilt, burned and finally rebuilt for the last time in the 1800s. Inside the church is a magnificent and large iconostasis that is gilded to the max and it surprised me that Rila doesn't sell postcards and/or photographs that show its exquisite detailing.
I'm going to put a link at the end of this video to one of the Painted Monasteries in Bucovina and would love feedback on which you think is the most appealing. I vote for Bucovina only because the Biblical frescoes speak to me...

Bulgaria - Rila monastery
The Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. At the heart of this monastery's history is the story of the medieval hermit Ivan. He was born in the 970's, and chose seclusion because of the moral decline during the reign of the Bulgarian Tsar Peter. He retreated to the almost inaccessible Rila Mountains. There he worked on his ideas, that were aimed at the underprivileged and for equality between people. His cave became a place of veneration for the Bulgarian people.
After his death, his legend only became stronger. His relics were transferred all over the Balkans by contemporary leaders to give legitimacy to their rule and power. Since the 15th century they have been laid to rest in the monastery itself.
Rila's monastic buildings originally date from the late 10th century, and were set up by the monastic community around Ivan. In the 14th century they were turned into a fortress by Hrelyo Dragovol, a feudal lord. Part of the walls and the tower today still remind of that period.
On January 13th 1833, a fire broke out and destroyed almost all (wooden) residential quarters. This national calamity was put right by thousands of Bulgarian craftsmen, that restored the buildings in a couple of years. The auspicious church in the center of the monastic grounds, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, was constructed in the same period. The master builder Pavel of Krimin, who also had worked on Mount Athos, was responsible for the design.
