Salmon Hatchery
Salmon return to Juneau's DIPAC Hatchery each year by the thousands, making their way up the fish 'ladder'.
SeafoodSource Video: Alaska salmon jumping at hatchery
Last week, SeafoodSource visited a salmon hatchery in Ketchikan, Alaska with the American National Fisheries Institute's Future Leaders program. The hatchery is a nonprofit run by Alaska's Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association.
Here, grown chinook salmon have returned to the hatchery after 2 to 3 years in the wild. Just like wild salmon, the chinook remember where they were born, and navigated back to the hatchery to spawn, swimming right up into holding pens like this one, where they will be harvested for their eggs and sperm to create new hatchlings. The input pipe, which brings fresh water to the pens, entices they 2,000-2,500 salmon in each pen into thinking it's a stream, and they are trying to jump up it.
Thousands of fish leap out of water at same time - Slow Mo!
Weird Jumping Alien Asian Carp Invade the Illinois River. In the 1970's silver carp were accidentally introduced into the Illinois River after escaping from a fish farm. The fish mistake pressure waves from the propellors of the boat's motors for the movements of predators and jump with fright. Each jumping fish scares its neighbour, causing a dangerous chain reaction.

UAF - 2015 - The Lost Alaskans
Retired Superior Court Judge Niesje Steinkruger highlights ongoing work to document the histories of Alaskans sent to Morningside Hospital through court records and other archived materials.
Steinkruger has spent five years as a volunteer for the Morningside Project. Thousands of Alaskans were sent to Morningside between 1904 and the early 1960s because there were no facilities here to treat the mentally handicapped and those suffering other disabilities. After the hospital closed, many of these people were never heard from again. The hospital building burned and all records were lost.
