-- About this video --
Today we are leaving the Fox Glacier area on the West Coast of New Zealand but not without checking out the Fox Glacier Terminal Face.
This is a free way to see the New Zealand glaciers, and it's only a 30-minute drive from the Franz Josef Glacier. So we drive up the Fox Glacier Valley to the start of the Fox Glacier Valley Walk.
The Fox Glacier walk is about 40 minutes one way down the every-changing glacier valley. It follows the Fox River then along a valley side until it reaches a viewpoint overlooking the Fox Glacier Terminal Face along with waterfalls.
After our Fox Glacier hike, we return the same way and continue our journey down the West Coast stopping at Hunts Beach along the way to try and find greenstone. Then we arrive at our final destination in Haast.
So what do you think of the free Fox Glacier Valley Walk? Is this a New Zealand Walk you would add to your must-do list? Let us know!

Fox Trail: Terminal Face Walk, Fox Glacier, South Westland World Heritage Area, New Zealand
This is an informative and leisurely trip to the dynamic face of Fox glacier in New Zealand. It is here that the Fox River emerges from the ice and where ice collapses are often heard and seen. This trip is for people with limited time or for those who would find the walks on the glacier too strenuous.
Although you will not walk on the glacier, your guide will take you to visit the final resting place of ice that has traveled 12 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps, all the way to the river valley floor. Your guide may take you closer to the ice than the unguided public (if it is safe to do so at the time) and you will have the opportunity to learn the role of the Fox Glacier in shaping its environment.
This two hour trip is reasonably easy going. About one and a half hours is spent walking over terrain at a speed that almost anyone can manage. There is a strong focus on providing you with quality interpretation so you can learn about the glacier and the surrounding environment.
It is sometimes possible to view the cave at the terminal face of the ice from which the Fox River emerges.

FOX GLACIER - New Zealand Heli Hike 2017 // Day 8
Heather & Joe Hodnicki 2 Honeymooners from New Jersey, USA spent 16 full days traveling the breathtaking North & South Islands of New Zealand! This is one of their many epic adventures. Fox Glacier, Held Hike. The fly-in, fly-out helihike combines the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of helicopter flights. By flying in you are able to access and explore a part of the glacier where its forces work hardest and often create spectacular ice caves and arches.
Equipped with leather walking boots and other equipment, you board the helicopter for your first flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall. Here, the ice is in constant motion.
Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier at approximately 800 metres above sea level. You will see the stunning Victoria Falls, which is the melt river from the hidden Victoria glacier. At this stage, your guide outfits you with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions and you follow the ice steps cut by your guide as you explore the amazing formations.
Each departure is a true voyage of exploration. There are so many changing features that the guides always find something new. Weather permitting, ice time is up to 3 hours.

Exploring New Zealand #10: Fox Glacier Walk
It is basically the only thing you can do if you go to Fox: go to the Fox Glacier for a half-day walk or a full-day walk. You can also go to Fox Glacier by helicopter, but where is the fun of it? So we did a Fox Trot with the people of Fox Glacier Tours!
In the next Exploring New Zealand video we go to Queenstown, which is the last part of our journey in New Zealand: youtube.com/diogok

Thousands of people visit the Fox Glacier every year. Most of these visitors will see it from a distance on the public valley walk. This is a great budget-friendly way to spend your time in Glacier country...however, if you have the cash we suggest you splash it on a heli hike on the Fox Glacier...!! There is no better way to see the Fox Glacier than up close and personal on the ice. We spent 3 hours sliding through ice caves and exploring this glacial giant and it was an incredible experience. It is top 3 activities in New Zealand without a doubt..!!

Exploring New Zealand #9: Travelling From Christchurch to Fox Glacier By Bus
Our time in Christchurch was nice but now it is time to keep moving, this time by bus. It takes almost the whole day to go by bus (or even train) from Christchurch to the glaciers in the West Coast of New Zealand, via Greymouth. We were going to Fox Glacier to do the Fof-trot walk with the guys from Fox Glacier gliding. We stayed in Fox township, at the Ivory Towers Hotel backpacker. The best part of the trip was the scenery, specially crossing the Arthur Pass.
In the next movie I show Fox Glacier itself.
Flying Fox: Heli Hike, Fox Glacier, South Westland World Heritage Area, New Zealand
The fly-in, fly-out helihike combines the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of helicopter flights. Suitable for children from 9 years old. By flying in you are able to access and explore a part of the glacier where its forces work hardest and often create spectacular ice caves and arches. Equipped with leather boots and other equipment, you board the helicopter for your first flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall. Here, the ice is in constant motion. Take in views of the dramatic upper icefall and Victoria Falls, which is the melt river of the hidden Victoria glacier, before landing. Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. At this stage, your guide outfits you with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions and you follow the ice steps cut by your guide as you explore the amazing formations and ice caves which are only seen here. Each departure is a true voyage of exploration. There are so many changing features that the guides always find something new. Weather permitting, ice time is up to 3 hours. Please note that this is a natural and ever changing environment. Ice features change constantly and no guarantee can be given that specific features will be seen. For more information visit:

Fox Glacier:
The Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe in Māori) is a 13 km (8.1 mi) long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls 2,600 m (8,500 ft) on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. Although retreating throughout most of the last 100 years, it has been advancing since 1985. In 2006 the average rate of advance was about a metre a week. In January 2009, the terminal face of the glacier was still advancing and had vertical or overhanging faces which were continually collapsing.
Like the nearby Franz Josef Glacier, it is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world, with its terminal face an easy walk from Fox Glacier village/Weheka. It is a major tourist attraction and about 1000 people daily visit it during high tourist season.Though people are told not to, some go beyond the barriers and climb without guides onto the glacier, whose rapid advance creates dangers of sudden ice and rockfalls.Fox Glacier township/Weheka, 6 km away from the glacier, functions mainly as a service centre for tourists, though it also services the local farming community, which had been its main focus until the 1990s (though tourism started as early as the late 1920s). The approximate township site had been gazetted as early as 1866. Bruce Bay is 46 km to the south-west of the township, and Franz Josef is 23 km north-east. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The outflow of the glacier forms the Fox River. During the last ice age, its ice reached beyond the present coastline, and the glacier left behind many moraines during its retreat. Lake Matheson formed as a kettle lake within one of these.Wikipedia

We did a heli-hike on the glacier and scaled bottomless ice crevices and caves before being whirled back to solid ground via helicopter????
Pure beauty on the above☃ Had a blast exploring Fox Glacier. We walked through ice crevasses, stood below massive ice towers and gaze up at this seemingly never ending icefall☃❄????
It's our first helicopter ride ever????! Cross that off the bucketlist✅
