Riesiger Skulpturencluster in Oostende.
Arne Quinze (geboren 1970, belgischer Konzeptkünstler.
Arne Quinze (born 1971) is a Belgian conceptual artist.
(Quelle:

A Short Visit to Ostend - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
We combine our stay in Bruges with a short visit to Ostend. For about 20 km from Bruges to Ostend, we take a train. The train ride takes about 15 minutes. A return ticket costs € 8.40, seniors pay € 6.50. We think it doesn't pay off to use a car, because probably the parking fees in the city are higher. In the spacious and modern train station in Bruges, you find a variety of shops to shorten your waiting time.
The train runs through flat meadows, probably flood plains.
Upon arrival in Ostend, we see the industrial harbor, where a floating platform for the construction of wind power plants lies at anchor. It is the wind turbine installation vessel Vole au Vent, first built for Hochtief and sold to the Jan de Nul Group in 2015.
The station building in Ostend, built between 1907 and 1913, is in the style of the Belle Époque.
In front of the train station in Ostend, we observe a sailing ship entering the marina. Therefore it has to pass two bascule bridges.
As we walk along the harbor basins, we see in the distance Fort Napoleon, a fortress built in 1814 by the French Emperor Napoleon. Today it is a museum and congress center.
In the opposite direction, we see the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk, a mighty Gothic cathedral that we will visit later.
Finally, we reach the sandy beach and are surprised by its dimensions. There is even a dog beach.
Right at the harbor entrance, at the Zeeheldenplein, the long promenade along the sandy beach, the artwork Rock Strangers by Arne Quinze was set up.

Arne Quinze RockStrangers Oostende
Rocks Strangers are strange objects popping up where you least expect them and having a huge effect on the urban and architectural context of the environment. Rocks Strangers generate the sentiment of estrangement because of their electric orange colour. At the same time however, they evoke the primal emotions of curiosity and astonishment of man.
Arne Quinze: A lot of cities around the globe look the same although they are located on different continents. You can still find identical buildings or the same streets. One can no longer detect any differences, people put up concrete walls around them. Building large-scaled installations makes people feel small as a human being. I hope that they start asking questions about what their function on this planet is. With my monumental sculptures I seek confrontation with my audience. I regard my work as a study about how I experience life and how people in general experience their lives.
People tend to seek a safe environment, a cocoon eliminating the unexpectable. Arne Quinze is especially interested in the human relations and interactions, how life and society are organized. Not only do people put up walls around them for protection, but they also want to create a certain distance between themselves and others. People need these axioms in order to feel good.
The artist used his imagination round these findings in order to put the idea of an alien element in the city. What would happen if we detected a strange element in our habitual urban environment all of the sudden? How do we react to unusual objects if we are confronted with them in our daily lives? Who or what remains the stranger, the person confronted with it or the object itself?
Rocks Strangers stimulate openness and bring different views and groups in society to the forefront. Quinze's public installations redefine social space as a context of maximum porosity, flexible, and facilitating experiential flows of diverse nature which provide alternative models of interaction. Because of this intense orange-red colour the sculptures contrast with their natural surroundings. The red-orange colour has a myriad of meanings, in nature it can attract or repulse at the same time. It is the colour of the blood that symbolizes death or life. It may not be a natural colour but when seeing it people are completely absorbed by it, again introducing possible reactions of people.

Amsterdam 2013, 328 pages, ill., 2 DVDs, 2 softcover books in a boxed set, 24,5 x 19 cm, Dutch/French/English/German
A boxed set of two books and two DVDs explore artist Arne Quinze's recent installations My Secret Garden and Rock Strangers.
The Kunsthal in Rotterdam proudly held My Secret Garden, the first exhibition in the Netherlands of work by the Belgian artist Arne Quinze. This was also his first large-scale indoor project. The exhibition encouraged visitors to explore their own mental place where they keep their most personal thoughts, memories, desires and secrets.
My Secret Garden was complementary to his other work, Rock Strangers, on the coastline in Ostend. This permanent installation is a public confrontation with alienation in the centre of the city and open to the public at the same time.
Arne Quinze invited Belgian author Saskia de Coster to capture the alienation which the Rock Strangers exude as well as the intimacy of My Secret Garden (Kunsthal Rotterdam) in contemporary stories and distinctive film footage while the projects were running simultaneously.
The two documentaries are explorations of both projects, through interviews about Quinze's work, unique footage of the making of the installations and 'uncanny' performances. The outcome is a quest for the traces of these works in each and every one of us.
Includes two documentaries on DVD with soundscapes especially composed by electronic music duo Vive la Fête
Text in four languages: Dutch, French, English and German
Shows details of how two large installations/exhibitions of Arne Quinze were realised: the artist at work
Includes short stories written by author Saskia de Coster, complementing Quinze's art work
