Rockaway Beach is a shoreline area of the Pacific Ocean in the southern portion of Pacifica, California, United States, approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of the city of San Francisco. It is located within a gently curving embayment with direct access via Rockaway Beach Avenue and providing easy access to Highway 1.

Rockaway beach near Pacifica South of San Francisco is a popular destination due to the combination of great coastal views, fine dining, surfing, and hiking. In 2016, the town had its first annual Dog Surfing Championship. The modern history of this place is connected to its geological features. There used to be a limestone quarry supplying materials to paint buildings in San Francisco and for making the track bed of the railroad. The railroad made this area easily accessible from San Francisco at the beginning of twentieth century. However, at one point the railroad went bankrupt and stopped functioning but the access was eventually restored via highway number 1 in the nineteen thirties. The boulders along the shores in front of the parking lot are meant to protect the nearby buildings from erosion. There are trails on the cliffs surrounding the beach and birds of prey are often observed. Beautiful views for those who made it to the top After storms you can spot some strange creatures washed out on the beach. These yellow blobs are the colonies of coral-like animals called bryozoans. Great White Shark prowling Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, California
The Sharks are in town! Not the San Jose Sharks hockey team, but San Francisco Bay Area coastal residents have been getting numerous Great White Shark sighting reports lately. We went to Rockaway Beach in Pacifica to see for ourselves. This is a popular surfing and kayaking spot for locals. There are usually whale sightings close to shore, by Mori Point and Linda Mar Beach, but today it was the man in the grey suit, the boss, the landlord, Carcharodon carcharias, or commonly known as Great White Shark. If you are going Surfing or Kayaking in Pacifica, consider yourself warned. They have been seen in Half Moon Bay as well. It is common to find Great White Sharks in the Farallon islands, up towards Bodega Bay, and south past Monterey and Point Sur. They call this area the Red Triangle.

High surf warnings were issued by the National Weather Service from Point Conception, California, north of the L.A. Basin, to the coast of southwestern Washington, highlighting an especially heightened threat to life and property within the surf zone.
Much of the coastal Bay Area regions are under a high surf warning as of 9 a.m. Monday morning -- including the Pacifica Pier.
The pier and neighboring Beach Boulevard, from Paloma Avenue and Montecito Avenue, are closed indefinitely until surf conditions improve, the city said in a statement Monday.
The Moonraker Restaurant at Pacifica's Rockaway Beach was hit by large waves around 4:30 a.m. Monday morning. The waves broke a window, causing significant structural damage to the outside of the building and flooding to one of the restaurant's rooms.

Fantastic sunset and ocean view in Devil's Slide Trail && Pacifica, California, USA
During one weekend this December, we visited Pacifica, California, a town which is right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, just south of San Francisco.
First we went to the Pacifica State Beach and watched some surfers.
Then we enjoyed a very relaxed afternoon hike at Devil's Slide Trail, which was previously a small section of the famous Highway 1 (prior to 2013). The birds were singing while flying and walked around people without hesitation. A sea plane was flying just above the surface of the sea, gliding like a pelican. The wavy clouds above were surreal, the sunset dramatic, and the fog in the distance just above the ocean was very dreaming and beautiful.
At last we visited downtown Pacifica, when the sunset over the sea was mostly covered by extremely thick blankets of clouds, only releasing a narrow gap of brilliant red light while still reaching the whole sky. What incredible craft of nature art!
