Rocket Festival in Thailand's Yasothon province
The Bang Fai Festival (บุญบั้งไฟ) is a festival that you must visit once in your lifetime! There are a few similar events around Northeastern Thailand, but the biggest and most popular one is in Yasothon (ยโสธร). I had a blast during the few days I stayed in town!
Issan Rocket Festivals Yasothon-Kalasin-Sisaket - Issan - NE Thailand
Dijahtal Arts - Rocket festivals known as Bun Bang Fai festivals in Thailand are held all round Issan in North East Thailand during April and May. The three festivals in this short video were filmed on my mobile phone in Yasothon, Kudwa in Kalasin and Rasi Salai in Sisaket in May 2016. The large homemade bamboo rockets include Bun Bang Fai Talai , round rockets which are a feature of Kudwa . These rockets festivals are full of music, colour and pageantry and like no other show on earth!

Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival in Yasothon Thailand
Travel dangerously at this incredible event in Northeastern Thailand
Every year on the second weekend of May, the people of Yasothon and surrounding provinces gather together to launch huge homemade rockets into the sky. A single rocket weighs over 100 kilograms and is packed full of enough gunpowder to keep it aloft for over five minutes!
The tradition behind the festival is that the rockets are symbolically seeding the skies to bring on the rainy season which is crucial here for the planting of rice - the staple crop. There is also a lot of symbolism around fertility and virility.
This is one of our favorite cultural festivals in Thailand. Even if cultural festival sounds like the kind of thing you normally skip, you will like this one. It's very local with few foreigners going, and something you'll probably never forget. However, it is not exactly the safest festival. They claim to be accident-free the last few years, but it is definitely dangerous, especially if you're watching the rockets from up close or checking out the tents where they are packing in the rocket fuel.

Yasothon is famous for the Rocket Festival, held every year in May. Originally a fertility rite it has become the major festival of the year in the region. Every school in Yasothon trains its pupils to dance Peun Muang, a traditional local dance so they can join the parade at the annual rocket festival. Pornsuree Seesang now 20 and studying in Bangkok danced in the Rocket festival as a child, she remembers the fun but also the heat as the children will dance for 4-5 hours in scourching sun. This celebration lasts for several days and peaks on the final day with serial firing of the makeshift bamboo-rockets, some are up to 10 meters in length and propel up to 10.000 meters. The festival grounds and firing takes place in a municipal park, the festival and parade takes place on Yasothon's main street. Rockets are individually judged by a committee and the respective winners take home attractive prizes. Malfiring rockets and bad performing ones are punished immediately by a toss of the entire rocketcrew in mudholes by their competitors!

Bun Bang Fai (Rocket festival). Yasothon 2019. Pt 2, the parade.
Day two of the Bun Bang Fai festivities. Possibly the quietest day although there is still a fair amount of noise being created. Teams from local villages and even international compete to have the best group at the parade. Some take this very seriously others are more relaxed. The parade lasted around three hours, the introductions seemed about the same length!
