Places to see in ( Alsager - UK )
Places to see in ( Alsager - UK )
Alsager is a town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, to the north-west of the city of Stoke-on-Trent, and east of the railway town of Crewe. The town has a population of 11,775. The civil parish is bordered by the parishes of Betchton to the north, Church Lawton to the north-east and east, Kidsgrove in Staffordshire to the south-east, Audley Rural, in Staffordshire to the south, Barthomley to the south-west, Haslington to the west, and Hassall to the north-west.
In the centre of Alsager is a lake, Alsager Mere. This isolated pool, once the focal point of the town, is only accessible by two fenced public viewing areas and by local residents who have gardens adjoining the waters. Alsager has hosted an annual summer carnival since 1998. Until June 2009 the summer carnival was located in Milton Gardens but it has since moved to the Alsager School Playing Fields to increase capacity. In 2007 Alsager was awarded Fairtrade Town status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
Alsager was recorded as 'Eleacier' in the Domesday Book, and was a small farming village until the 19th century when, due to its rail connections and rural character, it became a home of choice for pottery works managers from the nearby Federation of Six Towns which later became the city of Stoke-on-Trent. During the Second World War, a large armaments factory was built outside Alsager at Radway Green, and the town expanded dramatically to house the influx of factory workers.
The first Roman Catholic church in Alsager was one of the wooden huts and was attended mainly by the Lithuanians, most of whom were Roman Catholic. The Anglican churches are Christ Church (1789), and St. Mary Magdalene (1898). Alsager previously had three Methodist churches at Hassall Road (Wesleyan), Wesley Place (Wesleyan), and Crewe Road (Primitive Methodist). By December 2009 two Methodist churches remained, but today there is just one. The Roman Catholic community is served from St Gabriel's Church.
Formerly housed on Manchester Metropolitan University's Alsager campus, Alsager Arts Centre had a public programme of touring new performance and visual art work presented in two intensive seasons – September to November and January to March. The centre has now moved to the university's Crewe campus, as its Alsager site has closed. In August 2010 Alsager hosted the first annual Alsager Arts Festival. Alsager hosts the annual Alsager Music Festival which takes place in Milton Gardens.
Alsager is close to junction 16 of the M6 motorway, and is served by Alsager railway station on the Crewe to Derby Line and the semi-fast Crewe to Euston Line, both services operating hourly during the working day. Buses (the number 3) run to Crewe and Hanley every 20 minutes. The 78 bus service links Alsager with Sandbach, Nantwich, Leighton Hospital and Rode Heath once an hour, and service 315 with Congleton and Rode Heath about three times a day.
The Trent and Mersey Canal runs just to the north-east to the town, forming part of the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk and the South Cheshire Way footpath. The canal's towpath and the nearby 'Salt Line' are also routes of the National Cycle Network. Alsager town centre is characterised by independent and charity shops. The only national chain supermarkets in the town are a medium-sized Asda supermarket and Sainsbury's Local. Alsager has several parks. The town's main park is Milton Garden, which has an ornamental sunken garden, a skatepark, a small children's football pitch and a play area.
( Alsager - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Alsager . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Alsager - UK

The Natural Environment of Tudor London
This lecture offers a 'virtual walk' around the City of London with Sir Thomas Gresham, evaluation the City's air, water, soil and wildlife at that time.
A lecture by Carolyn Roberts, Emerita Professor of the Environment 10 April 2019
Tudor London is variously reported as a squalid seething mass of humanity choking on its own filth and fumes, and as a delightful garden where babbling brooks and sweet flowers delighted the senses of people such as Elizabeth I, Shakespeare and Erasmus.
Drawing on evidence from contemporary maps, paintings and writings, and modern environmental science, the lecture will offer a 'virtual' walk around the City with Sir Thomas Gresham, evaluating these different perspectives on the City’s air, water, soil and wildlife.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Lancing Manor's Ice House
Lancing Manor, these days, is a leisure Centre in West Sussex, but not so long a go it was home to Lord of the Manor of Lancing. Although the old house has gone, some of the gardens remain. At the very back, in a secluded spot, is where the old ice house stood. What was it for and is there anything left? I am out to find out. Martin Snow joins me to offer some historic information.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Charlecote House and Park, Warwickshire
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
Charlecote Park (grid reference SP263564) is a grand 16th-century country house, surrounded by its own deer park, on the banks of the River Avon near Wellesbourne, about 4 miles (6 km) east of Stratford-upon-Avon and 5.5 miles (9 km) south of Warwick, Warwickshire, England. It has been administered by the National Trust since 1946 and is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building.
The Lucy family owned the land since 1247. Charlecote Park was built in 1558 by Sir Thomas Lucy, and Queen Elizabeth I stayed in the room that is now the drawing room. Although the general outline of the Elizabethan house remains, nowadays it is in fact mostly Victorian. Successive generations of the Lucy family had modified Charlecote Park over the centuries, but in 1823, George Hammond Lucy (High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1831) inherited the house and set about recreating the house in its original style.

Quirky London - Giro the Nazi Dog
Quirky London - Giro the Nazi Dog is something that goes unnoticed by many visitors to London. At Number 9 Carlton House Terrace is one of London's most curious oddities. A tiny gravestone can be seen at the bottom of a tree behind the railings.

It is known as the Nazi dog memorial, perhaps a little unfairly. Back in the 1930s when the German Embassy was here the Ambassador, Leopold Von Hoesch, owned a little terrier which was playing in the garden one day when it chewed through some electric cables and died. Von Hoesch was very fond of the dog, whose name was Giro, so he buried him within the grounds.
Leopold Von Hoesch was the ambassador during the Weimar Republic and continued to be ambassador after the rise of the Nazi party, but he was very disapproving of their activities. He was, in fact, very popular amongst the British and when he dies he was give a proper state funeral whereby his coffin was draped in a Swastika and carried on a gun carriage past Buckingham Palace and all the way to Dover and then over the Germany where none of the Nazi Party attended his funeral. They were rather tired of his constant entreaties on behalf of the british.
Inside Number 9 Carlton House Terrace Mussolini had donated some marble for a part of a staircase in there which still exists and Albert Speer, Hitler's Architect, was responsible for quite a lot of the interior design. It is said that there is still a large mosaic of a swastika on the floor inside under a carpet somewhere but this cannot be confirmed by this parish.
Anyway, it's a pity that it's remembered as a Nazi dog but I suppose strictly speaking he was ambassador whist the Nazi party were in power. He wasn't really a Nazi …I'm not sure about the dog's political allegiances though!

Bestwood Lodge, Nottingham. Gothic masterpiece filmed from the air.
One of my regular stopover hotels, Bestwood Lodge is definitely one of the most dramatic in appearance.
History relates that Bestwood Lodge was once a Royal residence, much
used for hunting purposes. King Edward III issued letters patent,
dated “at his Park at Bestwood” in 1364 and earlier still, Henry I
granted to the Priory of Lenton permission to have “the right of
having two carts to fetch deadwood and heath daily out of the Royal
Forest of Bestwood”
In nearly every reign it is possible to find some reference to the
Royal Hunting Lodge at Bestwood. Edward IV stayed at Nottingham
Castle for three weeks from 1st October 1469 and availed himself of
the joys of hunting in Bestwood while in residence at the Castle.
Nottingham Castle was Richard III’s ‘Castle of Care’ and he too
enjoyed hunting at Bestwood whenever he was in residence, his last
visit was on Tuesday August 16th 1485 when he rode out with a few
friends to visit the Lodge.
The original house was demolished in 1860 to make way for a large
house in domestic Gothic style, with red brick and white stone
facings. This Lodge was finished in 1863.
My thanks to Simon and Aprile...

Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides
Join us as we visit Kolkata in this travel vlog covering as much as we in the city as our final destination on our India trip. After a long train ride from Varanasi we finally arrived in Calcutta with less than 48 hours to visit the city. The health of our group as a whole had really deteriorated at this point with Audrey and my Mom being really sick and my Dad struggling with a cold.
On our first morning it was just my Dad and I wandering from Colootola east of the maiden along Garer Maath and Elliot Park en route to visit Victoria Memorial. Along the way we spotted numerous cricket matches which we stopped to watch for a bit. By the end of that it was quite hot and humid so we took a yellow taxicab back to our hotel on Sudder street.
The following day, after my parents left to return home to Canada, Audrey and I ventured nearby to the Sir Hogg Stuart Market which honestly was a bust given the hassle factor. Instead we decided to enjoy some rooftop sunset views of Kolkata before ending our last evening by doing a pulled rickshaw tour of Calcutta at night.

2) Watching cricket in Kolkata
3) Visiting Victoria Memorial

Our visit Kolkata travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a city tour, visiting museums and memorials, shopping at markets, pulled rickshaw rides and rooftop views during sunset. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Kolkata tourism brochure, Kolkata city tour or Kolkata itinerary.
Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides video transcript:
Good morning from Kolkata. We have made it to our final destination in India. Sam is going to show you around Calcutta with his Dad.
We didn’t venture too far on our first day. Our hotel was located in Colootola just east of the maidan, so we mostly wandered the park on foot & watched a bit of cricket, before heading down to Victoria Memorial.
So the one thing you'll notice if you're touring around Kolkata just on foot is just how popular cricket is here in this city. It is just everywhere you go, anytime there is a park or an open space you'll see a bunch of men playing cricket.
So next up we're visiting Victoria Memorial Hall and to visit the garden it is like the cost of a cup of chai on a train in India. It is only 10 Rupees. If you want to go visit the museum it is 200 but we're uh a little tired today so we're just going to walk around the premises and take some shots.
The Victoria Memorial was built to commemorate Queen Victoria after her passing, and it officially opened in 1921. Inside they have a collection of Indian paintings and Western paintings, as well as rare photographs, old manuscripts and coin collections.
Today is our last day in Kolkata. We just said goodbye to Sam's parents this morning. We're flying out tomorrow. So we're going to do some sightseeing. It is almost sunset time so we're thinking of doing a rickshaw tour around part of the city.
We went out for a little walk around our neighbourhood. We found some street art, took photos of the iconic yellow cabs, watched a game of cricket on the street, and then befriended a sweet dog.
Visiting the Sir Stuart Hogg Market was a bust. We were surrounded by a group of people who just wanted to sell us stuff and take us to their shops.
We are doing a tour by pull rickshaw because apparently these are typical of Kolkata. This is what you do in Kolkata.
That is a wrap from Kolkata. We are all packed up and ready to go. That is the end of our journey in India and what a journey it was. Oh my gosh like yeah. It has been a crazy month. It has been a rollercoaster ride of highs & lows and we'll be talking more in a travel tips video.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

It is a quirky 18th-century, 16 sided house with fascinating interior decoration and collections
This unique sixteen-sided house was described by Lucinda Lambton as having 'a magical strangeness that one might dream of only as a child'.
It was built for two spinster cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, on their return from a grand tour of Europe in the late 18th century. It contains many objects and mementoes of their travels.
The extraordinary interior decoration includes a feather frieze, gathered from native game birds and chickens, laboriously stuck down with isinglass.
There is also a fragile shell-encrusted gallery, said to contain nearly 25,000 shells, which can be viewed in its entirety using a touch screen 360 degree virtual tour.

George Westinghouse changed the face of the world with his inventions, patents, business sense, and personality.
Not a day goes by that we don't use something pioneered by George Westinghouse.
He is the forgotten role model that our country needs today to teach future generations of Americans that hard work and kindness pay off.
George Westinghouse was one of the most successful men in the world. A respected engineer, inventor and America's greatest industrialist.
He was a pioneer of the industrial revolution and played a leading role in turning the United States from a young agrarian society into a modern economic powerhouse.
The name Westinghouse has been a household name the world over for more than 100 years because of one man, his love of machines, and his desire to make the world a better place.
The accomplishments that George Westinghouse had in his lifetime had a major impact on the way we live today.
His work in the railroad industry with the Westinghouse air brake, the electrification of the world with Westinghouse alternating current, him being instrumental in developing natural gas as a fuel, and his impact on the shipping industry with the Westinghouse geared marine turbine engine.
George Westinghouse was known as a good person.
He always had a very good rapport with his workers. There was never a strike at any of the Westinghouse companies all the time he had control of them.
And, you know, that was not common back in those days. He certainly was not motivated by greed or money. He really thought that his accomplishments would benefit mankind. And that alone was a driving force for him. This film also engages in the power struggle between Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

A Humbling Journey 2: The Theist Delusion (Ft. Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens) (FULL MOVIE 2018)
DESCRIPTION:
Theists are so sure they are right, they are so sure that they follow the one true religion. Yet they struggle to accept that if they were born in the middle east they'd feel just as confident about Islam or if born in India, they'd likely be Hindu. They refuse to accept that their belief is a byproduct of societal and cultural indoctrination. Rather they cling tight to these delusions. This movie aims to expose this aspect of religion and much more.
Challenging religion does not eliminate the possibility of the existence of a God or a higher power that unites us as human beings. However, the God that has been taught by churches, synagogues and temples is not truth. After all, each teaching fundamentally contradicts each other. These religions are man made ideology that is often endorsed for political reasons and societal control.

Westinghouse: The Life & Time of an American Icon
Westinghouse is a feature-length documentary about the life and times of George Westinghouse, his companies, legacy, personality, partnership with Nikola Tesla, and conflict with Thomas Edison. George Westinghouse is considered America’s greatest industrialist and the only man who would go up against Thomas Edison, and win.
Please subscribe and share for more great documentaries!
His victory over Edison during the Battle of the Currents set the stage for the entire future of electric power. The Westinghouse air brake is considered one of the most important inventions in history. Automobile shock absorbers, railroad signaling and the modern day weekend all owe their existence to the man who Andrew Carnegie called, “A genius who can’t be downed.” Westinghouse may be most famous for the massive companies that he created, but the man called “Uncle George” was a reserved creative giant who went out of his way to treat his workforce with dignity and respect. He was an honest millionaire in the days of robber barons, an optimist in the days of skeptics, and a generous CEO from whom today’s executives can learn.
Narrated by Emmy award winner Carol Lee Espy, a TV/radio host for KDKA Radio, which was the first commercial radio station in the country. Originally owned by Westinghouse until the company’s merger with CBS in 1996, the station made history by airing their first broadcast from the Westinghouse Building in East Pittsburgh in 1920. Carol is also a singer, songwriter, and producer whose voice can be heard on national PBS productions. In 2001 she helped to launch “On Q”, a news magazine at WQED Multimedia in Pittsburgh, and became the voice of WQED. Since then Espy has won two Mid-Atlantic Emmys for her writing and producing and seven nominations for writing/producing and music composition.
