The King's Head Pub Theatre - 50 MUST SEE THINGS IN LONDON - Joolz Guides
SUPPORT MY CHANNEL ON PATREON ➜
London's Upper Street in Islington is North London's theatreland. Home to the Almeida, Sadlers Wells and the Little Angel Theatre, it also has some fabulous theatre pubs like the Old Red Lion and The Kings Head.
In this London Guide Joolz goes to see La Boheme at the Kings Head in an award winning production featuring Caroline Kennedy. The lovely thing is they did one of the scenes in the actual pub bar area much to the surprise of many of the the ordinary drinkers.
The Kings Head started life as The Kings Head Tavern in 1543 where King Henry viii used to stop for a drink on his way to see his mistress.
In 1970 Dan Crawford opened the theatre part of the pub making it the first theatre pub since Sheakspeare's times. Joolz Guides definitely recommends coming to see a production here or just pop in to see the roaring fire and sample the sausage rolls, scotch eggs and toasted marshmallows!

Shrunken Heads, Death, Prostitutes Vaginas - Viktor Wynd Museum
Weird places to see in London - Episode 50
Viktor Wynd's Museum of Curiosities is probably the most peculiar place you will visit and definitely one of the top 50 MUST SEE places to go and things to do in London. It is quite unlike any other museum as it has the influence of Viktor Wynd jumping out at you whoever you look.
Vaginas of Victorian prostitutes in jars of formaldehyde, Amy Winehouse's poo in a jar, David Bowie's mullet and Russell Brand's pubic hair to name but a few of the oddities on offer.
Viktor Wynd, the head curator is the chancellor of the Last Tuesday Society which started life at Harvard and no doubt found its way to London after Wynd studied fine art in Florida. They put on masked balls, danse macabres, art exhibitions and even seances and if you like you can do a cocktail class in the bar of the museum where they have expert mixologists on hand.
Viktor Wynd is a dandy from a bygone age, belonging more in an 18th century gothic novel than modern times and feasts on invertebrates amongst other odd behaviour.
I would definitely recommend his personal tour of the museum otherwise you might miss some of the eccentric and remarkable stories connected with each exhibit. Each and every one has its own story attached and you could listen to him for hours as he recites poetry and speaks of his artist friends like Sebastian Horsley crucifying himself.
If you visit nothing else make sure you see this extraordinary place at 11 Mare Street, Hackney, London.

Quirky London - Giro the Nazi Dog
Quirky London - Giro the Nazi Dog is something that goes unnoticed by many visitors to London. At Number 9 Carlton House Terrace is one of London's most curious oddities. A tiny gravestone can be seen at the bottom of a tree behind the railings.

It is known as the Nazi dog memorial, perhaps a little unfairly. Back in the 1930s when the German Embassy was here the Ambassador, Leopold Von Hoesch, owned a little terrier which was playing in the garden one day when it chewed through some electric cables and died. Von Hoesch was very fond of the dog, whose name was Giro, so he buried him within the grounds.
Leopold Von Hoesch was the ambassador during the Weimar Republic and continued to be ambassador after the rise of the Nazi party, but he was very disapproving of their activities. He was, in fact, very popular amongst the British and when he dies he was give a proper state funeral whereby his coffin was draped in a Swastika and carried on a gun carriage past Buckingham Palace and all the way to Dover and then over the Germany where none of the Nazi Party attended his funeral. They were rather tired of his constant entreaties on behalf of the british.
Inside Number 9 Carlton House Terrace Mussolini had donated some marble for a part of a staircase in there which still exists and Albert Speer, Hitler's Architect, was responsible for quite a lot of the interior design. It is said that there is still a large mosaic of a swastika on the floor inside under a carpet somewhere but this cannot be confirmed by this parish.
Anyway, it's a pity that it's remembered as a Nazi dog but I suppose strictly speaking he was ambassador whist the Nazi party were in power. He wasn't really a Nazi …I'm not sure about the dog's political allegiances though!

Downstairs has everything ranging from David Bowie's hair to mermaids, skeletons and Chinese dildos as well as the preserved vaginas of nineteenth century prostitutes.
Upstairs there is more art, poetry an aquarium and a bar. (Bar snacks include tinned grasshoppers and silkworms.
Once a month patrons are invited to purchase a ticket for a cocktail mixing masterclass which includes being led through the stages of making four classic cocktails, at the end of which you can choose a cocktail of your own to make (and drink of course). In fact, the day I went there seemed to be so much alcohol on offer than I had to slow down. It seemed to descend into a tequila shot fest on top of all the cocktails we had drunk!
The museum and bar is curated by Viktor Wynd, an artist, raconteur and dandy whose Wundercabinet is something to behold. Amy Winehouse's poo, Russel Brand's pubic hair and all sorts of oddities reside in this remarkable space.
As patron of the Last Tuesday Society Viktor Wynd also offers tours of the museum, lectures on tailoring, sloths pop art tattoos and fish keeping. There is also a petting zoo where you can stroke tarantulas, snakes, frogs and chameleons.
The sarcophagus downstairs, located within a discreet space with skeleton on view is available, he says, for hire for diners and intimate moments.
I can also highly recommend any of his dans macabres or masked balls which take place throughout the year but mostly at significant events like Hallowe'en, New Year and Valentine's Day.
Check the Last Tuesday Society website to buy tickets to any of thee events. And to see more of Joolz's London Guides go to

Dick Whittington Stone - Joolz Guides - London

He was born some time in the 1350s and was sent to London to seek his fortune where the streets were said to be paved with gold. He managed to get an apprenticeship as a mercer (or cloth maker).
There is a famous fairytale which has been turned into a successful pantomime about how Dick Whittington ran away from his cruel master and then go a job on a ship because his cat was very good at catching rats. Apparently this made him very wealthy and he ended up becoming Mayor of London.
However, this is not true. Legend has it that he ran away from his master, Hugh Fitzwarren, and reached Highgate Hill when he stopped to rest his weary bones. He then heard the sound of the Bow Bell drifting across the fields which he thought were saying Turn again, Whittington, thrice Mayor of London.
So he did return to his master who was a wealthy mercer and he married his daughter and became very wealthy and successful.
The monument on Highgate Hill called Whittington Stone features a cat simply because of the fairytale but there is no evidence that he had a cat.
Dick Whittington did go on to become Mayor of London and by all accounts he was a good mayor. He was actually mayor 4 times and was considered very generous and charitable! (He was not Lord MAyor of London. The Lord Mayor is the Chief Justice Admiral and General and takes precedence over the monarch in some cases. The City of London having its own government separate from the monarch since Roman times.
He had once lent money to King Henry V and when the king came to visit him he built a huge lavish fire with fragrant woods and spices and threw £60 000 worth of bonds onto the fire announcing that he was cancelling the King's debts, to which King Henry V replied, Surely never had a King such a subject! and Sir Richard Whittington (now knighted) replied, Surely never had a subject such a king!
He built St Michael's Church (where he is buried) in the city, restored St Bartholomew's Hospital and had many aqueducts built. He even fined breweries if they served bad beer! He also rebuilt Newgate prison and prohibited the washing of animal skins in the river Thames by young apprentices because they would often die of cold.
Not a bad set of achievements for someone who died aged 48!

How to use TFL London Cycle Hire - Santander Cycles
The London Cycle Hire scheme is a great and affordable way to get around London. Joolz shows you how to use them in this video and gives some helpful tips on what not to do.
Most Londoners call them Boris Bikes after Boris Johnson who was the mayor of London when the scheme was initiated and they have sponsors who change periodically. At time of filming it was called the Santander Cycle Hire scheme or Santander Cycles.
If you do it right you only have to pay two pounds to hire it for 24 hours but you must only use it in 30 minute stages unless you want to be charged more money. Each 30 minutes is free but if you don't dock it you get charged another £2 per 30 minutes. If you like these guides do please subscribe to the youtube channel and sign up for more at the website!
