Roosevelt Campobello International Park
Recorded September 24, 2016
Roosevelt Campobello International Park preserves the house and surrounding landscape of the family summer retreat of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his family, located on the southern tip of Campobello Island in the Canadian province of New Brunswick in Fundy Bay. It is connected to the mainland by the Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, at Lubec, Maine in the United States. Here in August 1921, 39-year-old Roosevelt, who would go on to become the 32nd President of the United States, fell ill and was diagnosed with polio. FDR was no longer able to stay at the beloved island, but he sailed there in 1933 and visited briefly in 1936 and 1939. Eleanor Roosevelt loved the cool summer weather and visited many times with her children and friends. After her death in 1962, the family deeded the property to the governments of the U.S. and Canada; in 1964, they created the 2,800-acre International Park. The cottage, built in the Shingle Style and completed in 1897, was designed by Willard T. Sears.

Roosevelt Campobello International Park - Campobello Island, New Brunswick
Just off the coast of Lubec, Maine, is Campobello Island, New Brunswick, home to Roosevelt Campobello International Park. The park preserves the site of Roosevelt Cottage, a summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his family. The cottage was built by Roosevelt's parents in the 1890s, and the family used the property for several decades. Until 1921, Roosevelt spent most of his summers on the island. It was here in August of that year that Roosevelt was struck with polio, severely limiting his future use of the island. Much of the park remains undeveloped and features a scenic drive, hiking trails, some beaches, picnic areas, and rugged New Brunswick coastline.

A Roosevelt retreat
This small Canadian fishing island has the distinction of having once been the summer home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Today, the Roosevelt Campobello International Park occupies the nearly 3,000 acres of the former Roosevelt estate and is a unique example of cooperation between the U.S. and Canada. Beautiful Campobello Island N.B., Canada
Earlier I did a video tour of Campobello but it was in winter and I have finally got around to doing a summer version. It was a windy day and that always raises havoc with my little camcorder so I will apologize right off the bat for the poor sound track. I did do voice overs for the worst of it but there is still some wind noise. This was recorded on a beautiful hot August day but the fog was on it's way in so it was a race to get out ahead of the fog.
