Starting from pretty Alexandra, this is an extraordinary one-day adventure often combined with the Clutha Gold and Otago Central Rail Trails that connect at each end. The trail follows the mighty Clutha Mata-au River through the Roxburgh Gorge, a strange landscape of towering bluffs, old schist huts, interesting flora, and finishing at the Lake Roxburgh Hydro Dam.

Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail | Cycle Central Otago | New Zealand
The 34 km Roxburgh Gorge Cycle and Walking Trail is described as another world. It offers a wilderness experience through the remote and stunning Roxburgh Gorge in Central Otago, New Zealand.
The trail starts in either Alexandra or from the Lake Roxburgh Dam and includes a jet boat transfer through the middle of the Gorge (bookings essential).

Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail
proudly present Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Tours tours along the Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail, a 34km, grade 2 to 3 cycle trail from Alexandra to the Roxburgh Dam. Ride-able in either direction, it offers stunning views and interesting riding with twisting climbs and flowing descents. The middle section is not accessible by bike and requires a scenic 10km boat ride through the steepest part of the gorge.
The trail forms part of an extensive network of Great Rides in the Otago region, linking with the Clutha Gold Trail at the Roxburgh Dam, and to the infamous Otago Central Rail Trail at Alexandra.
At only an hour away from Queenstown, it is a fantastic day trip. Our day tours from Queenstown start from December 2013. It is achievable for most fitness levels, but we would not recommended it for beginner cyclists.
