Your Guide to Central Otago - New Zealand
New Zealand's most inland region is a landscape of vast, open terrain and alpine scenery. The ambience of the area is defined by many things: the exciting change in seasons; the tranquillity that comes with having only 11,000 inhabitants; a rich, gold mining heritage; and contemporary, award-winning wines.
To unwind and relax in Central Otago is not hard. You could cycle a section of the Otago Central Rail Trail; tour a vineyard; play a round of golf; or visit an historic, gold mining town and learn about Otago's equally-prosperous past.

SNOW 28 May 2013 going to Invercargill NZ via first white stuff
SNOW 28 May 2013 going to Invercargill NZ via first white stuff
Yes - this winter's first big dump of snow happened
The night before - the day we had to go to Invercargill, NZ
We left Roxburgh around 9am travelling South on SH8
There was around 3 inches of SNOW at home here
Drove down past Dumbarton, Ettrick, Millers Flat & Island Block
Turned onto SH90 at Raes Junction - heading into West Otago
Continuing on through Edievale, Crookston, Tapanui, & Waikoikoi
Before turning onto SH1 at McNab.
Thence it was just a short distance - into Gore.
After Gore.. we made short work (on a clear open road)
Of passing through Mataura, Brydone, Edendale & Dacre
Then Woodlands, Kensington & ?
What .!!!
ROADWORKS & a detour .. just 1/2 a mile before Invercargill.
Saw us entering the city.. via Tweed Street (South City area).
Well - we had over three inches of SNOW in Roxburgh that day..
And they had very little - elsewhere in New Zealand.
We thought of - that one dump - as being bad enough.
But it was nothing compared to our last HUGE deposit..
Currently dumped across New Zealand in mid June 2013
However.. we got very little of that (only a lot of rain)
This winter's snow storms were considered to be ..!!!
Some of the worst (run of) big storms in 20 years or more.,
Maybe even bigger & far worse than the one 45 years ago
Which caused the sinking of the Inter-Islander Ferry.
For those whom can remember back that far.. to?
The Wahine Disaster.. on 10 April 1968.
The fornight of savage June storms raged across most of NZ,
And in their wake have left LOTS of snow (or snowmelt floods).
Most NZ'ers would agree.
This winter (2013) .. lots of people got home.?
