Get in[edit]
From Colombo you can take the train or bus. Both travel right next to the beach coast and have beautiful views. This is why getting in is one of the best things about Galle.
Bus no. 2 takes you to Galle (with the sign indicating the destination on the bus) and costs around Rs. 230 on an air-conditioned bus, and takes around 3 hours to reach (if the bus takes the Southern Expressway it should only take about 1 hour). Buses that take Southern Expressway starts from Kaduwela Bus Station located near the starting of the expressway in Colombo. It takes 45 mins from Colombo Fort by bus to Kaduwela Bus Station. From there air condition buses to Galle costs 390 LKR (take about 1 hour).
Depending on traffic, or how many stops the train makes, traveling from Colombo city can be anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours.
Coming from the Kandy region, buses also run to Galle via Matara. They will take between 8 to 10 hours, cost approximately 150 LKR and have a few stopovers along the way. Despite the stopovers, a 10 hour ride on this non-AC bus is unpleasant, but an experience nonetheless.
Get around[edit]
Tuk Tuk or on foot is your best bet if you are traveling in Galle or close by.
The bus is an easy and cheap way to get to Matara,Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa from Galle.

The Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss.
If you are superstitious, you may consider making a donation and saying a prayer at Seenigama temple for good luck.
A walk along the Fort's walls at sunset is very pleasant if you don't mind being hassled to buy table cloths, fake antique 'Dutch' coins, or powdered milk.
Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer you a walk round the Fort for a fee. Walking round the Fort is free. Local Authorities do not charge any fees.

The Peace Pagoda and the view from on a clear day is also quite lovely.

Villa Baywatch Rummassala, Hotel Room at Unawatuna
Villa Baywatch is a luxury villa, located atop the legendary Rumassala Hillock.
The Villa comprises of 6 air-conditioned luxury rooms (4 Double Rooms and 2 Triple Rooms), each with an attached toilet having both hot and cold water, Wi-Fi, mini fridge and TV.
Villa Baywatch offers a spectacular panoramic view of the ancient city of Galle, its famous Harbor, the historic Dutch Fort and the famed Unawatuna Bay, all across the stunning blue waters of the Indian Ocean. A five minute eco-trek along the pathways down the hillock, will lead you to the famous ‘Jungle Beach’ of Rumassala, offering its rich bio diversity.
The Japanese Peace Pagoda (stupa) is a beautiful shrine bordering the villa on to the south of the villa. This magnificent ‘Stupa’ has been designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. Legend has it that Rumassala, where the villa is located, is really a piece of a mountain from the Himalayas that fell off here when Hanuman (of Ramayana fame) was carrying it over Sri Lanka.
Those who seek to explore the beautiful turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, will find the Jungle beach on the Rumassala promontory absolutely irresistible. For those who swim or snorkel, there is a wealth of underwater treasures, including a number of coral reefs comprising the best-preserved corals in Sri Lanka, shipwrecks, and a great variety of fish and turtles. Over 60 species of endemic birds have been sighted by the ornithologist Clive Byers on the Rumassala Hillock.
After long hours of exploring the hidden mysteries of Rumassala, you can expect to relax and unwind in the swimming pool at Villa Baywatch, basking in the luxurious modern comforts the villa offers, coupled with delicious gourmet cuisine, and the famed, genuine warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality. Villa Baywatch merges seamlessly all that matters to create a vacation of luxury, peace and adventure.

Rumassala Jungle Beach : Where Beach and Jungle Meet!
Rumassala offers visitors the pleasure of a sandy beach; a small bay area right next to the forest-covered mountain, popularly known as the Jungle Beach.
- roar.media
Visiting Rumassala is quite easy, as you just need to drive east along the main road from Galle for around 10 minutes to reach it. Hence, it is highly recommended.
For those who would prefer some sunbathing, Rumassala has a nice tucked-away bay area and sunny beach better known as 'Jungle Beach'. It is right next to the forest-covered hill of Rumassala and is an extremely sought for a place to visit on the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka. You can walk directly up the hill for some awesome photographs of the Galle harbor too.
Rumassala is truly a haven for herbs. Researchers have found 150 different species of herbs on Rumassala Hill. These species are unique in that area. Strangely, they don't grow off the hill, even though technically speaking the soil properties should be the same in that entire area. This can only be explained if one considers that the soil properties and environmental conditions of Rumassala Hill are inherently different from the rest of the surrounding landscape. That would then mean that Rumassala Hill is non-native and was instead transplanted, which supports the Ramayana legend. Even further, the herbs on Rumassala Hill have been proved to be an exact match to those on Ritigala Mountain, which also grow in a unique manner similar to Rumassala.
