Don’t forget to dedicate some time to Galatas, the sister town of Poros at the Peloponnesian coast across. Here, the hotels, tavernas and bars are a cheaper alternative…
Poros island: top weekend destination.
It's full of pine trees which reach the shores and the sandy beaches The residents of Poros are no different from other Greek islanders in spontaneity, dignity and hospitality. The large homes on the beach have a neoclassical style in contrast to the common duplex houses in Brinia, Milo, Pounta and Kasteli. The first dwellings were built in 1463 and located around the famous Clock.
In the center of the city you can find the Town Hall, the archaeological museum, a public library along with a reception hall for exhibitions and other cultural events.
Many taverns are sparcely located among the picturesque alleyways and the whitewashed houses of Poros which are surrounded by bougainvillea . Visitors can enjoy souvenir shops, cafeterias, taverns and clubs playing Greek and English music all along the pier.
Along the coast going towards the training center, we come across the open air movie theater Diana which has premiers of the best films shown this past winter. Right next to it is the exhibition hall of Poros that constantly has exhibitions.
Poros is comprised of two islands, Sphairia and Kalavria, of which the former is a volcanic rock and the latter planted with pine trees. Poros is easily accessible from Piraeus (Ferries depart from GateE8 in Piraeus) and from Peloponnese (Galatas).
Bus and taxi terminals are located in the center of the beach area. Access to boats that go along the shores of Galata is also available there. Public transportation around the island runs pretty smoothly all day. Buses leave every hour while boats depart every ten minutes. On the beach you can find scooter and bike rentals whereas cars are rented right across the island, in Galata.

Music by me :
======================================================
Russian Bay is set amphitheatrically along a small cove framed by thick pine woods and sheltered from the channel by the pretty Daskalio islet.
The ruins are all that remains today from the abandoned Russian Naval Station. The Treaty of Kuchuk Kainarji signed in 1774 between Russia and Turkey ended the Russo-Turkish war that had erupted four years earlier. As the victor, Russia was rewarded with free passage for its fleet in the seas under the Ottoman Empire. Russian naval activity increased after Russia again emerged victorious from the second Russo-Turkish war of 1788-1792, when the Russians chose the sheltered Poros strait for a naval support base. According to several accounts, by the early 19th century, the Russian Navy had established itself at Poros, occupying the site of the current Greek Navy Training Center. The Russians also built warehouses for their ships’ resupply as well as large bread ovens to feed the ships’ crews. These facilities stood until 1830 when Ioannis Kapodistrias purchased them from the Russians to set up the Greek Navy’s first station. In exchange, he ceded the pine-framed cove near the strait’s northwestern end to the Russians to relocate their naval station. The new Russian station was even larger, with bigger warehouses and bread ovens.

Cruising skills training with SV Rozerina off Poros island
With the racing season almost over, we jumped on board Palio Faliro Offshore Sailing School boat Rozerina for an autumnal two-month cruising skills training course.
It was actually our third time taking this specific course. We enjoyed it so much the previous two times, we thought why not do it again and continue to build on our mooring and anchoring skills.
Just as importantly, it's an opportunity for us to get out on the water and keep sailing after the excitement of the summer regattas and pep up our mood ahead of the winter months.
Here you can see us sailing Rozerina to the Saronic island of Poros for two weekends of training in Med mooring, anchoring and long line mooring.
Strangely enough, on both Saturdays, we set sail from Alimos Marina in southern Athens under blue skies and light winds - a little too light to begin with.
Close to where we docked Rozerina on the first weekend, we noticed smoke seeping out of a yacht moored a few boats over from us and called the fire service. Soon enough, the smoke was billowing out. Thankfully, no one was on the boat.
After a cosy sleep on Rozerina, on both Sundays we woke up to ominous clouds hanging overhead and a little rain, which dropped off the closer we got to the marina. However, Aeolus cooperated and delivered some wind, allowing us to get in some good sailing on the journey back.
Greek army fighter jets even put on a show - and what a show it was - that felt like it was just for us as we tacked across Faliro Bay.
In November and December, spring always seems like such a long way off. But the months pass and, before we know it, we're happily pulling on our gear and hoisting sails in Greece's generous sunshine.
Happy holidays everyone.
SV Rozerina is also available for charter. She's super comfortable and pretty speedy, too. See more here
