Christianity in Azerbaijan/Azərbaycanda Xristianlıq/Христианство в Азербайджане
Azerbaijan is one of the states that can rightly be proud of its culture, history, customs and refined appreciation of religion. Since ancient times representatives of different religious faiths - Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam - have lived in Azerbaijan. Historically, Azerbaijani people have always been tolerant of other religions and treated them with respect, which is a national feature of the Azerbaijani people, an integral part of its mentality.
The history of Christianity in Azerbaijan dates back two thousand years. The appearance of this religion in the territory of modern Azerbaijan is associated with the name of apostle Bartholomew, one of Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples. Church tradition says that St. Bartholomew suffered and died for Christ in 71 AD in the city of Baku.
Easter is one of the main and ancient Christian holidays. It is a holiday of joy, which marks the victory of life over death and the salvation of human soul. Christians believe that on this day, after the great suffering, Son of God Jesus Christ rose again, who was crucified on the cross for the sins of man.
By the number of its followers, Orthodoxy is the second denomination in Azerbaijan after Islam. According to statistics, today there are about 50,000 Orthodox Christians in Azerbaijan.

STORYLINE:
Pope John Paul II, during his five-day visit to Azerbaijan - his first since September - has held a mass for about 120 Roman Catholic Azerbaijanis and invited guests.
He spoke out against Communist repression and tried to reach out to the Russian Orthodox Church.
He didn't mention Islam - the principle religion of Azerbaijan.
During the service in a Baku sports stadium, security officials dragged away an Azerbaijani man on crutches after he tried to approach the altar, coming within five metres (15 feet) of the pope.
Security officials said the man claimed he wanted to have his picture taken with the pontiff. Metal detectors screened all those entering the stadium.
The increasingly frail, 82-year-old pope was wheeled into the stadium on a movable platform and mounted the altar using a cane helped by two aides. His breath was audibly laboured, and as he has often done before, he passed the microphone to an aide to finish the service.
The few Catholics in this Muslim, ex-Soviet republic, sat in the front rows during the mass and were the only ones to respond during the Pope's Russian-language readings. The other few thousand people in attendance were government officials and invited guests.
