Ryan Mountain Snow Hike in Joshua Tree National Park
Ryan Mountain is one of the best hikes in Joshua Tree National Park, with some amazing views of the center of the park from above. I have hiked it many times, but never in the snow. So when we heard that it was snowing in the park, we grabbed our snow gear and went out to hike to the peak. It was beautiful and full of solitude, easily one of the most memorable experiences we have ever had in the park.
I filmed this on December 30th, 2019.

Hiking Joshua Tree National Park - Ryan Mountain Hike
This video describes the popular 3.2 mile hike up Ryan Mountain the way it was on 1-18-2018. The scenic hike begins and ends at the Ryan Mountain trail head and gains 1075 feet of elevation. The 360 degree view from the summit includes Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. San Gorgonio, the Wonderland Of Rocks, Queen Valley, Malapai Hill, Pleasant Valley, Pinto Basin and most of the mountain ranges in the park. The trail is wide, well used and easy to follow. The hike is moderate in difficulty and took us about 2 hours to complete the round trip.

Best Day Hike in Joshua Tree National Park | Ryan Mountain
Matt and I made a quick trip out to Joshua Tree to hike Ryan Mountain. We were hoping to catch sunset, but the conditions weren't great for a good sunset picture.
Ryan Mountain is a 5,456-foot-high mountain in Joshua Tree National Park. The trail to the peak is a strenuous hike, ascending 1,050 feet in 1.5 miles. Ryan Mountain is a popular attraction in the park, because it leads to panoramic views of Pinto Basin, Lost Horse Valley, Queen Valley, and Pleasant Valley.

DETAILED VIDEO SUMMARY:
I started out the morning with a short hike to Arch Rock just outside of White Tank Campground. I then headed over to hike the Desert Queen Mine and Wash Hike, which was actually captured in a separate video (link: before having a tailgating lunch out of my Subaru Forrester in the Jumbo Rocks Campground. I was hoping to stop in somewhere to watch some rock climbers but I didn't see any this time around. Next stop, we checking in to my AirBNB in 29 Palms. For this particular trip, I found AirBNB to be the best lodging option for my needs, although there is plenty of camping in Joshua Tree. I finish of the day with the best sunset hike in Joshua Tree, the short but challenging hike of Ryan Mountain. On the way back to the AirBNB I stopped for just a little nighttime photography before heading in for an early night and early morning. The next day, I explored Skull Rock, Keys View and exited the park via the Cottonwood entrance stopping to explore Cholla Cactus Garden on my way out. This was such an enjoyable trip to Joshua Tree and I hope to return shortly to do even more hiking!

Joshua Tree National Park is an American national park in southeastern California, east of Los Angeles, near San Bernardino and Palm Springs. The park is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the Mojave Desert. Originally declared a national monument in 1936, Joshua Tree was redesignated as a national park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act. Encompassing a total of 790,636 acres (1,235.4 sq mi; 3,199.6 km2)—an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island—the park includes 429,690 acres (671.4 sq mi; 1,738.9 km2) of designated wilderness. Straddling the border between San Bernardino County and Riverside County, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains traverse the southwest edge of the park.

Ryan Campground in Joshua Tree National Park California offers 15 primitive campsites at elevation 4,300ft. Campsites located along one loop that circles two large rock outcroppings. Hiking trails depart direct from the campground. About 1/2 mile off the paved road via a dirt road this campground tends to be less traveled and a little more peaceful. Sites are best suited to tent or car camping with RVs limited due to size and very un-level parking pads.
Pit toilets and no water.

Joshua Tree National Park Adventure - Indian Cove, Ryan Mountain, Rattlesnake Canyon

Hiking to the summit of Ryan Mountain in Joshua Tree National Park. It was so windy the cold hurts your ears. That is why I wore my cardigan as a head scarf. Even though it's a desert there is so much gorgeous plant life. And of course... Joshua Trees! Thanks to Felix and Michelle for some of their video footage (at the AirBnB and that great pano view from the top of the mountain!)
