Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) Kokugikan (国技館) is mainly for Sumo (相撲) (sumo wrestling tournaments) which is well known as Japan national sport. It’s an indoor venue called Ryogoku Sumo Hall. Gratefully 2020 Summer Olympics (2020 Tokyo Olympics) (2020年東京オリンピック) will be held in this venue for boxing matches. According to the Tokyo Olympic official, the maximum capacity will be 7,300. JAPANTRIP 「Ryogoku - Sumo Town 」Sumida-ku, Tokyo【東京墨田区両国】
Ryogoku (両国, Ryōgoku) is a district of Tokyo where the sumo stadium, many sumo stables, chanko restaurants and other sumo related attractions can be found. It is the center of the sumo world. Sumo events have been staged in this area since a long time before, but until the beginning of the 20th century, sumo tournaments were held outdoors at shrines and temples.

Walking by the streets it is easy to see sumo wrestlers casue many Sumo dormitory and schools are located in Ryogoku. Sumo Match at the Kokugikan in Tokyo 両国国技館で相撲
I was lucky to get tickets to a preseason sumo tournament at the Kokugikan in Sumida, Tokyo. This was my first time going to a match so I wasn't too sure what to expect. The matches start pretty early so I noticed only the hardcore fans were there at the beginning. On this day the matches lasted about 7 hours. You should purchase your tickets early, since they usually sell out. During the matches you're free to eat and drink. They sell food at the Kokugikan, but the custom is to bring your own food and drinks.
I found it interesting that the matches only last a matter of seconds. Most of the match is a traditional ceremony of greeting the other player and showing them respect before the match starts. In all, I thought it was a great time and I can't wait to go to my next match.

Japan, Tokyo: Sumo Wrestling Stadium (Ryogoku Kokugikan)
Sumo is both an exhilarating sporting event and a fascinating cultural experience, and it’s worth going out of your way to attend a sumo tournament (basho) when you visit Japan.
The only problem for travelers is that the official sumo tournaments only take place 6 times throughout the year.
Japan’s Annual Sumo Basho
The official sumo basho take place 6 times each year, beginning in January and then occurring every other month. 3 of the 6 sumo tournaments take place at the Kokugikan sumo arena in Tokyo’s old-fashioned Ryogoku neighborhood, with the other 3 held in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
Below is a list of each sumo basho, and where and when it takes place. Each basho lasts for 15 days, beginning and ending on Sundays (dates vary from year to year).
January Tournament (Hatsu Basho): Tokyo
March Tournament (Haru Basho): Osaka
May Tournament (Natsu Basho): Tokyo
July Tournament (Nagoya Basho): Nagoya
September Tournament (Aki Basho): Tokyo
November Tournament (Kyushu Basho): Fukuoka

【Tokyo Guide】Sumo Town Ryogoku (JR両国駅周辺を散策)
Ryogoku is the sumo town, having a lot of sumo-beya (sumo stables) and chanko-nabe (sumo wrestler's dish) restaurants.
Sumo is one of the oldest sports in the world, dating back to the middle of the Yayoi Era, 2,000 years ago! Today, it is easily classified as the national sport of Japan. Sumo is almost completely a spectator sport, and the professional wrestlers become internationally famous and popular.
