The real forest of Ödmården that is fictionalized in the upcoming norse dark fantasy horror film DRAUG.
Eyskógamörk (or Ödmården) is an ancient forest on Sweden's east coast, traditionally dividing the north from the south.
According to Ketil Hœng's Saga the forest was twenty rest stops deep and made for an evil journey.
Therein roamed outlaws, praying on any travellers daring to tread its dark paths. There were also plenty of wolves, bears and other beasts. All of this created a breeding ground for stories and myths of darksome origin.
When you came out on the other side of Ödmården you were in Hälsingland. Which in the old days was the name of about everything north of that forest.
In the 11th century the Archbishopric of Bremen sent six missionaries to Sweden. One of them, Stenfinn (or Simeon to the church), travelled to Hälsingland.
In his eagerness to spread the word of God he commenced vandalizing the pagan temples near the northern border of Ödmården.
After tearing the idols off the walls of the pagan temple in Söderala he enraged the native heathens so much he had to flee south.
They finally caught up with him in the middle of Ödmården, where they stoned him to death.
Nearby a permanent resting place was built. An inn where you could rest your feet and quench your thirst before venturing further.
Tönnebro Värdshus stands right by European Route E4 which was built upon the old Norrstigen (the North Trail). The main path through Ödmården.
A particularly accident-ridden passage south of Tönnebro has been nicknamed The Road of Death by the locals.
No wonder, they say. Being built right over a vitterstråk (a vættir wight passage).
The storied forest may have shrunk,
but its myths are still very much alive.

The Norwegian heavy water sabotage was a series of operations undertaken by Norwegian saboteurs during World War II to prevent the German nuclear weapon project from acquiring heavy water , which could have been used by the Germans to produce nuclear weapons. In 1934, at Vemork, Norway, Norsk Hydro built the first commercial plant capable of producing heavy water as a byproduct of fertilizer production. It had a capacity of 12 tonnes per year. During World War II, the Allies decided to remove the heavy water supply and destroy the heavy water plant in order to inhibit the German development of nuclear weapons. Raids were aimed at the 60 MW Vemork power station at the Rjukan waterfall in Telemark, Norway. Prior to the German invasion of Norway on 9 April 1940, the Deuxième Bureau removed 185 kg of heavy water from the plant in Vemork in then-neutral Norway. The plant's managing director, Aubert, agreed to lend the heavy water to France for the duration of the war. The French transpor...

Self-guided Moose & Caribou Hunting in Alaska: Episode 3 - Butchering Big Bulls & Packing Out
It’s day three of Ian Harford’s and Steve Wild’s epic self-guided hunting adventure in Alaska. After an incredible day hunting, Ian and Mark McGuinness were successfully able to harvest two beautiful caribou bulls. Today, they head back out into the Alaskan wilderness, this time butcher the big bulls and pack them out.

Despite a good night’s rest, the team are still a little weary after yesterday’s physical exertions. Steve and Mark will be doing the knife work, while Ian will be packing out the meat and carrying it back to camp ready to be collected by Cole the following morning. The plan is to do the hard miles first and bring the meat down to the river about half way back to camp. That way the final journeys will be along flatter ground.
After using the Garmin InReach Explorer GPS unit to pinpoint the location of the bulls, the team choose the most advantageous route. As they approach Steve spots a brief glimpse of a grizzly bear. Ian loads his rifle just in case and circle around, upwind of the bull. Their scent should push the bear on, but you must always take precautions when you’re in between one of natures most dangerous predators and what it may consider to be it’s dinner.
As they continue their trek, they finally reach the caribou’s and immediately get set to work. This is not the first time Ian and Steve packed out two caribou bulls at the same time and they know exactly what’s ahead of them. Steve and Mark get started with the knife work. All of the meat must be retrieved from the carcass before the skins and racks can be brought out. Steve is a Master butcher and a wizard with a set of knives. Nothing of nutritional value will be left behind.
With the first quarter packed and loaded, Ian’s work finally begins. It’s around a mile back to camp as the crow flies, but closer to 2 miles when you take into consideration the ridges and ravines. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, but Ian’s focus is on making sure each step finds solid ground.
After dropping off the first load, Ian heads straight back up the mountain for another. Ian re-joins Steve and Mark who have been busy as the bull is nearly completely stripped of meat and there are already a number of loads ready to go.
The team are making good progress but time is now against them. They need to get all of the loads back to camp before nightfall, as they know there’s a grizzly bear lurking not far away. Ian continues packing as Steve moves on to help Mark finish his bull. This really is a team effort, with everyone playing their part, working to their strengths.
With all of the meat now stripped from the carcasses, Steve and Mark also set about moving the last loads back to camp. They leave Mother Nature to dispose of the bones and entrails. Nothing here goes to waste and the circle of life continues. By the time they reach the airstrip the team are moving at a pretty impressive pace.
With the final load dropped off ready to be collected in the morning another incredible day in the Alaskan wilderness comes to an end.

Whale shark sucks fish out of hole in fishing net - Conservation International (CI)
On a recent expedition to Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, Conservation International's Mark Erdmann learned how whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. The sharks have also learned how to suck the fish out of holes in the nets!
This can be dangerous — but the local fishers like the sharks, considering them good luck, and are working to modify the net designs to prevent sharks from entering.
