Alone in the African Bush: The Smoke that Thunders an Artist's African Safari Adventure
On the road alone in the African bush with a rented a 4x4 truck, avoiding charging elephants and sleeping in a tent with lions and rhinos roaming free beside me--this was the inspiration for my current art exhibition The Smoke that Thunders, Under the patronage of the permanent mission of Zambia to the United Nations (UNO), Geneva.
Step One: fly to Lusaka, Zambia and pick up a specially modified, 4x4 truck at the airport from a guy nicknamed “Snake”.
Step Two: Ride off into the African “Bush” with dreams of hunting “The Big 5” game with my camera while savoring my self-guided safari as the inspiration for my next series of art work.
Leaving South Africa, I felt confident, after having spent a couple relaxing weeks studying up on the trip and learning about the hazards of off-road driving. Things like maneuvering through deep, heavy sand, dealing with giant elephants charging at your truck, and sleeping in a tent while lions and hippos roam free beside you. However, standing there in the airport parking lot as rain started to pour down, I began to question myself as Mr. Snake causally explained the details of this specially modified, safari monster.
As the storm intensified, I pulled out of the parking lot heading north, with my clothes soaking wet and my head buzzing with anticipation. My itinerary was completely open aside from the borders of the four countries I was cleared to take the vehicle into: Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & Namibia. Now all I needed to do was find a place to sleep.
BIOGRAPHY: Joseph Pisani is a New York artist & photographer who calls Switzerland home. His adventure travel to 70+ countries while purposely avoiding the easy route become the inspiration for his abstract paintings, sculptures & installations. He explains it like this: «Spontaneity keeps things fresh, while serendipity guides me through it all. Along with many amazing experiences, there have been a few rough spots along the way, but these often turn out to be the best memories».

Amakhosi Safari Lodge
Rediscover yourself and the richness of life in 'The Place of Kings'. Situated past Pongola on the road to Nongoma, where King Goodwill Zwelethini has his palaces, Amakhosi Safari Lodge gives majestic new meaning to a royal bush experience and welcome. Personal attention rules, from the warm hand-towels, sherry and smiles that greet guests, to the plush comfort of the six palatial thatched chalets and two Umntwana Honeymoon Suites strung along the Mkuze River. Each is angled for the ultimate privacy and has a separate lounge, a seductive step-up double bath with candles, and a bedroom opening onto a viewing deck overlooking the river, some set with a personal plunge pool. Relax here or in a rock-fringed lodge swimming pool and watch the flash of the Lilac-breasted Roller or Malachite Kingfisher, but when darkness falls, listen for the roar of the lions . . . This is Big 5 territory and what you don't view from your deck, expert guides invariably will deliver on dawn and dusk game drives. Conversation around the fire in the boma each night is of close encounters with lionesses and playful cubs, sand-bathing elephants and streaking cheetah. But equally engrossing are the adventurous guide's encounters with smaller creatures, from delicate bark spiders to glossy dung beetles; and anecdotes about the trees and medicinal plants of the reserve. Depending on the season, you can choose from fishing, walking, cultural and frogging safaris. Most evenings centre on the 5* plated bush dinners produced in the Amakhosi kitchen. Guests linger contentedly on the expansive lodge deck and reconnect themselves with nature through the sounds of the bush, then retire to the friendliness of the bar, or doze around a fire pit, where traditional Zulus and later, fireflies dance. This property has provided all content and is solely responsible for its accuracy.

My MediumJozi - What it's like Riding in Johannesburg!

Visiting Johannesburg South Africa
In this video I speak to Ed, a lifelong Jo'burg resident and language tutor, about what to do and see in Johannesburg as a tourist. We also touch on life in Jo'burg past and present, and how language learning can be a bridge to help build friendships among people from different backgrounds and communities.
I would always recommend people do their own research on places, there is a wealth of information on Google and YouTube, and do talk to South Africans as well, they are rightly very passionate about their country, coming from the UK where patriotism is seen in a negative light, and often discouraged I find this beautifully inspiring.
Here are some links to some of the places mentioned in this video to get you started. Please do bare in mind that like anywhere there are some less safe areas, but having said that South Africa is a beautiful country both in its landscape and all its peoples, and I feel it is a must visit. If you have a question about an area please do feel free to ask us. I have listed all these areas not because I consider them all tourist attractions, but because I am interested in both the history and future of South Africa, and I feel the study of this information is interesting and important. I still cannot make my mind up on how I feel about organised Township tours, I am interested to go into these areas because I like meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds, but I worry that organised tours maybe seen as a type of people safari. I would be interested to know how others, particularly South Africans, feel about them.

Linden, Northcliff, Cresta & back then on to Hyde Park
I drove this route late afternoon on the 28th of April 2019. It was a Sunday so the roads were quieter than a weekday at the same time would be.
I hope you like the video although I am not sure if the visuals are as good as some of my other videos that were filmed closer to midday.
If you would like to skip the initial part where I drive through Linden, to the part where I get to Northcliff Corner on Beyers Naude, that is at timestamp 2:44. From Northcliff Corner, I drive in a northerly direction (facing the sun), across the N1, make a turn and then come back. I go up onto Northcliff Hill and then stop for diesel at an Engen petrol station. Finally I drive from Northcliff Corner through Blairegowrie to Conrad Drive and then up Jan Smuts to Hyde Park Shopping Centre.

RHINO & LION NATURE RESERVE Johannesburg, South Africa Tourism
This video is about Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, also known as Rhino and Lion Park. The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve lies roughly 40 kilometres north-west of Johannesburg and offers a chance to see white rhino, lion, buffalo, hippo and other species of game up close and within half an hour of the major Johannesburg metropolis. One of the most popular tourist attractions and holiday destinations in South Africa. The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve The Nearest Faraway Place is a privately owned game reserve covering some 1200 hectares which has opened to the public in 1990. After humble beginnings visitors may now view in excess of 650 heads of game, including some very rare and endangered species. The reserve falls within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COHWHS).If you get to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve at feeding time, you’re virtually guaranteed to see predators, as they are hand-fed – a bit like cheating, but a big bonus if you haven’t the time to head off to the Kruger National Park on safari. You can also select to go on a game drive offered by the reserve with a knowledgeable ranger, and with roughly 600 head of game within the reserve, a visit is bound to include almost all of the reserve’s species - endangered species such as cheetah, wild dog and the Cape vulture.
