Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal, India. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the last day of the Bengali month of Poush. In Bengal, this day is one of the most auspicious days of the year. Thousands of pilgrims from different parts of the country gather at Gangasagar, the point where the holy river Ganges submerges into Bay of Bengal.
Gangasagar pilgrimage and fair is the second largest congregation of mankind after the holy Kumbha Mela. The latter is observed once in four years at alternate locations in north, central and central-west parts of the country, Gangasagar fair and pilgrimage is held annually on the Sagar Island's southern tip in the Ganges delta atop the Bay of Bengal. That makes Gangasagar all the more distinctive.
Gangasagar is a charming tourist destination, which attracts both pilgrims and adventure lovers. Located on an island in the Sunderbans, Gangasagar offers the charms of an un-spoilt beach on the estuary of the river Ganges. Gangasagar offers acres of silver sand and clear blue sky, and the calm sea for visitors who would like to spend their weekend in tranquillity.
Also known as Sagardwip, Gangasagar is still unexplored and therefore unexploited. The island of Gangasagar is one of the most famous Hindu pilgrimage centres in India. The lighthouse at Gangasagar offers a panoramic view of this spectacular beach, from where you can enjoy sunrise and sunset. During sunset, the sky turns golden with a patch of red on the horizon and the silver sand reflects the last rays of the sun.

Jambu Dwip | an expedition by Forest Department WB
Jambudwip is an isolated island in the Bay of Bengal, about 8 Kilometers to the south east of Sagar Island and almost same distance to the south west of Frazergonj, in the South 24 –Parganas District of West Bengal. Transient fishing community has been using a small part of this island from October to February every year since 1955 for fish drying as a traditional livelihood activity. The island was uninhabited and these fishermen always go back to their natal villages - mostly in the same district - at the end of the fish-drying season. Forest Department collected revenues, fees etc. and issued permits every year till 1998. Thus these fishermen have been enjoying an uninterrupted customary right on the island.
In August – September 2002 the forest department burned down the fishing implements that the transient fishers left in the island in huts – at the end of the fishing season (2001 –2002) – and debarred the fishermen from entering into the island in October 2002. According to the Forest Department this “eviction” has been done in compliance with the Supreme Court verdict of 1996 to remove all encroachments from reserved forest.

Tropical Cyclone Hudhud is strengthening as it churns over the Bay of Bengal in the northern Indian Ocean basin and millions of people in India are in its path.
As of 6 p.m. EDT Saturday, Hudhud was located about 110 miles southeast of Visakhapatnam, India and exhibited maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, making it the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.
Hudhud is now moving west-northwest and additional strengthening is expected. Hudhud is in a favorable environment for strengthening and the U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts it to become the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane just before it makes landfall along the east-central coast of India in eastern Andhra Pradesh or Odisha (Orissa) states midday Sunday, local time. (Eastern India is 9.5 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Daylight Time).

Evacuations are being carried out ahead of Hudhud and on Saturday, the Times of India reported that a nine-year-old girl was killed and an 11-year-old boy was reported missing, after a boat evacuating people from a seaside village capsized.
Lohachara Island Submerged Islands
Lohachara Island was an islet which was permanently flooded in the 1980s. It was located in the Hooghly River as part of the Sundarban delta in the Sundarban National Park, located near the Indian state of West Bengal.

I have documented a video of West Bengal's one of the tourist place Diamond Harbour.....Diamond Harbour is a city and a municipality of South 24 Parganas district in the Indian , State of West Bengal. It is situated on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River where the river meets the Bay of Bengal.
In earlier days Diamond Harbour was a stronghold of Portuguese pirates. The ruins of the fort of Chingrikhali (locally known as Purano Kella) can still be seen. There is an old lighthouse nearby.
