Hindu devotees at Sagar Island during Gangasagar Mela
Gangasagar pilgrimage and fair is the second largest congregation of mankind after the holy Kumbha Mela. The latter is observed once in four years at alternate locations in north, central and central-west parts of the country, Gangasagar fair and pilgrimage is held annually on the Sagar Island's southern tip in the Ganges delta atop the Bay of Bengal. That makes Gangasagar all the more distinctive.
Gangasagar is a charming tourist destination, which attracts both pilgrims and adventure lovers. Located on an island in the Sunderbans, Gangasagar offers the charms of an un-spoilt beach on the estuary of the river Ganges. Gangasagar offers acres of silver sand and clear blue sky, and the calm sea for visitors who would like to spend their weekend in tranquillity.
Also known as Sagardwip, Gangasagar is still unexplored and therefore unexploited. The island of Gangasagar is one of the most famous Hindu pilgrimage centres in India. Every year on Makar Sankranti (mid-January), pilgrims from all over India, gather at Gangasagar for a holy dip at the confluence of the river Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. After the holy dip, the pilgrims offer 'Puja' at the Kapil Muni Temple or Ashram. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Gangasagar Mela is organized in this island, which is one of the biggest fairs in West Bengal. Gangasagar finds mention in many tales of Hindu mythology and in ancient Indian literature like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, a novel of Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay and a poem of Rabindranath Tagore.
The lighthouse at Gangasagar offers a panoramic view of this spectacular beach, from where you can enjoy sunrise and sunset. During sunset, the sky turns golden with a patch of red on the horizon and the silver sand reflects the last rays of the sun.

Gangasagar: The Place of Purity by Tourist Destination
Sagar island is an island in the Ganges delta, lying on the continental shelf of Bay of Bengal about 100 km south of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The island, also known as Gangasagar or Sagardwip, is a place of Hindu pilgrimage. Every year on the day of Makar Sankranti(14 January), hundreds of thousands of Hindus gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of river Ganges and Bay of Bengal and offer prayers (puja) in the Kapil Muni Temple. From Sealdah station take Namkhana Local which is cheapest way to reach Namkhana. .If you reached Namkhana Station or Bus Stand then go to Namkhana Ferry Ghat (Bakkhali Bank). From there you can ask anyone which ferry to board for Ganga Sagar. Make sure you board the right ferry.
Sagardwip possesses the charms of an unspoiled beach on the estuary of the river Ganges. The breeze was soothing, and the sun which was now getting done for the day, illuminated the sky and water in shades of gold. The white sands were covered in golden hues, and view was exhilarating. The beach otherwise is a calm, soothing place to enjoy a sunrise and sunset.
The Onkarnath Temple is another very sacred temple at Gangasagar. The temple is dedicated to Lord Onkar and his teachings. Set amidst trees and marshes, the temple has a very peaceful atmosphere. It is rarely crowded and you can pray here, at your own pace.
The Sagar Dwip has a light house, in the vicinity of the beach itself. The lighthouse gives you a beautiful view of the surrounding place and is open for tourists to access. Also, for all those photography fanatics, This lighthouse is the perfect place to capture this earthy town.
The temple dedicated to Saint Kapil Muni is the principal attraction of Sagardwip. After a holy dip in the water, pilgrims go to the temple to offer prayers to the Saint. The temple, along with four other temples got destroyed in a storm in 1960s. The Kapil Muni Temple was the only one that got restored. It is believed that after attainting salvation, Kapil Muni came back and passed on the divine knowledge to his mother, on how to attain Nirvana. Kapil Muni is therefore worshipped by people to help them absolve their sins.
The Bharat Seva Ashram is a small ashram run by a trust in Ganga Sagar. The ashram has a small temple and it offers accommodations to its guests. The Ashram is one of the most trusted places for a room in Ganga Sagar.
