We did the thing sailors are not meant to do - booked plane tickets home on another continent! We have to make it to Tunisia in just a few weeks so bash our way upwind along Cretes northern coast - we do make some delightful stops like the town of Chania with its Venetian harbour and delicious restaurants. We have some wild sailing leaving Crete and arrive in the gorgeous Greek island stopover of Kythera where the locals have created the most amazing swimming grotto out of the natural rocks in the harbour.
We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board and are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day!
We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand.
We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures!
We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have?
Thanks and enjoy.

MINOA - a Minoan ship reconstruction in Chania, Crete, Greece - ΧΑΝΙΑ ΚΡΗΤΗ
Minoa is a scientific reconstruction of an ancient Minoan vessel from around 1500 BC. Ships like these sailed in the Aegean Sea at the peak of the Minoan period, connecting the Greek islands and the mainland in the Bronze age. The hull is neither carvel nor lapstrake, but a special shell-first construction that used ropes to pull the strakes together. Read more on the website of the Maritime Museum of Crete in Chania (Ναυτικό Μουσείο Κρήτης):
The rig is a square sail with a special net of thin ropes that hangs in front of the sail fabric to ease the strain on the fabric. Similar cross patterns can also be observed on 2000 years younger rune stones from Sweden, depicting Viking ships. There is no doubt that the Vikings replicated rigs that for long had been in use in the Mediterranean Sea. To read more about the Viking ships see my site

Sailing in Crete, Greece
My first Couchsurfing experience! I travelled 125 miles east from Chania to Agios Nikolaos, Greece. I met Stephan from @sailing_friends for the first time. I helped him fix his boat... and by 'fix his boat' I mean designed him a logo ha :D This was my first time on a boat, also I can't swim... Things are really looking up right? :)
A week together on a boat with someone you've never met before can be unnerving at first but as soon as I met Stephan and realised he was from Germany I was relaxed. I've had one rule since I started travelling a year ago, always say YES! to a German ha it always makes for an interesting story :)
A week of awesome weather, food, laughter, relaxing, exploring, working, bromance & learning to use a dinghy... It's a lot harder than it looks... Maybe I just have weak arms :/ I'm looking forward to catching up again with Stephan and finally meeting his fiancé Mini.
Next adventure please :)

BALOS BEACH CRETE, All You Need To See About Balos Beach
In this video you are going to see the beautiful and famous beach of Balos which is located approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos, formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani and below the range of Platiskinos. Balos is surely the mostly photographed beach in Crete, a very favorite subject of all tourist guides for Greece. It is no coincidence that Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Balos with their private yacht many years ago.

Chania 4K: Top Beaches & Sights of Akrotiri Crete - Travel Guide | Drone Ακρωτήρι
This part of Greek Land will steal your heart. A multicultural crossroad of civilizations, the kingdom of blue skies, shiny rocks, bright sun and crystal waters…..AKROTIRI, chania, crete
Just beyond the town of Chania and its airport, in Akrotiri peninsula you will find traditional villages and the famous beaches of Marathi, Seitan Limania, Kalathas, Stavros, Loutraki & Macherida. Nearby beaches: Number one: Marathi beach.
Marathi, a popular resort 17km east of Chania, which hosts two beautiful beaches with fine sand and shallow calm water, well protected from the winds. It is well organized with all necessary amenities nearby.

A beautiful beach in a natural bay at the Cape Akrotiri, 12km northeast of Chania city.
Windy & ideal for water-sports. Opposite Kalathas, there is a small island, easily reached by swimming.
Number three: Stavros beach
Stavros (cross) is a seaside village 17km NE of Chania with the characteristic steep camel-shaped
mountain, famous from the film “Zorba the Greek”, where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki Dance.
The main beach has marvelous white sand and shallow turquoise water fully protected by winds.
Number four: seitan limania beach
Seitan Limania (satan harbours), is 22km northeast of Chania. a tiny fantastic beach, with deep azure waters at a wild landscape. Enjoy diving, snorkeling & make sure you wear sneakers to ride the steep path leading to the beach.
Number five: Loutraki beach
Loutraki, a very nice quiet beach with clear & shallow waters, suitable for children. It is well organized and provides all the common amenities.
Number six: Maherida beach
stunning little beach with white sand and turquoise water, surrounded by sharp rocks. not organized, the secluded beach of Machairida attracts mainly naturists and gay men.
Number seven: Tersanas beach
The calm water, combined with the proximity to the touristic facilities, make Tersanas ideal for family holidays.
Accommodation:
The area is quite developed and a popular destination for holidays. A variety of accommodation choices will meet all of your criteria, from luxury suites, to all inclusive units or hospitable apartments & rooms:
Skandalis, Creteview Luxury Villas, Villa Imperial, Casa Manolesos. Chorafakia, Kounoupidiana, Marathi, Loutraki, Stavros & Tersanas are the main villages of Akrotiri.
Cretan cuisine:
The Traditional Cuisine of Crete is famous worldwide. Olive oil is the cornerstone of the Cretan diet and the secret for the longevity of Cretan people. Taste it at Almyriki & Skalakia Restaurants.
Always the first thing you hear about Chania - the Venetian Harbour, the old port, the narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants.
Chania is also one of the two places you are most likely to see on arriving in Crete. It is beautiful - that is to say much of the Chania you will want to see is clustered close to the harbour - old buildings, museums, churches and crafts shops (some with genuinely interesting and sometimes local, products on offer).
Food is offered in great variety and sometimes great similarity - there are many restaurants and also cafes, at which to reflect upon the experiences of places you have just explored together with the enjoyment of some tasty food - we have suggestions for restaurants further on.
The atmosphere has a touch of Florence and Venice (a few years ago when those cities still had some room to walk), combined with the culture and character of Cretan people and traditions.
The Chania harbour is wonderful and at any particular time of day the light produces a different result, creating a different place.
This is the best chance to see some of the old buildings - of Venetian and Turkish design, that Crete once had across the island - many have since been destroyed by the ravages of war and plunder.
Chania is surrounded by numerous rich options for sightseeing, exploration and discovery. Mountain villages provide a view into the inner Crete. The Samaria and many other gorges can be hiked, archaeological sites abound.
Chania has an international airport with scheduled flights year round and abundant charter flights serving much of Europe during the season - April to October. Buses from the airport are virtually non-existent. If you're not driving, you should take a taxi.
Ferries sail to and from Athens (Pireas) daily - the port for ferries for Chania is at Souda, a few kilometres away. When the ferry arrives, if you manage to scamper onto the bus in time, this will take you to Chania. But it is best to plan to take a taxi.
