The Saint Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin, is one of the three Catholic churches in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. With the guidance of the Pope in Rome, it also serves as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Port Moresby, and follows a Roman or Latin liturgical rite of the church.
The cathedral’s structure has an impressive entrance portal in the style of a Sepik Haus Tambaran, a type of traditional ancestral worship house in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Among its notable visitors was solitary Pope and canonized saint, Saint John Paul II, who paid a visit on May 8, 1984.

Reconciliation Ceremony for North Waigani Parish
The Catholic Church went through inculturation in 1965 under the Vatican II Council, In PNG customs and traditions were blended into the makeup of some church buildings and surroundings.
For the Mary Queen of the Pacific Catholic Parish in North Waigani, Port Moresby, removing some of the artifacts caused a misunderstanding and since then has halted progress in building a new church, today marked reconciliation between two parties to bring progress.
