To Love A Place - Idaho's Main Salmon River
Conservation of wild rivers has to start with love. Amy Kober has spent the last 18 years of her career dedicated to saving waterways with American Rivers.
In an effort to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act in 2018, American Rivers is working to protect 5,000 miles of new Wild and Scenic Rivers and one million acres of riverside land protected over the next five years.
In addition to the powerful conservation goal, American Rivers along with NRS, YETI, and O.A.R.S., have launched the 5,000 Miles of Wild campaign: embarking on a mission to tell the stories of America’s rivers and the people who love them—from whitewater boaters and avid anglers, to families and urban dwellers who enjoy backyard escapes.
“By collecting personal stories from people across America, we will show how rivers connect all of us and send one clear and unified message to our elected leaders: our rivers are worth saving,” Amy said. “Our aim is to recruit, engage and empower a lasting army of people speaking up to protect our rivers and clean water.”

Salmon River (Idaho)
The Salmon River is located in Idaho in the northwestern United States. The Salmon is also known as The River of No Return. It flows for 425 miles through central Idaho, draining a rugged, thinly populated watershed of 14,000 square miles and dropping more than 7,000 feet between its headwaters, near Galena Summit above the Sawtooth Valley in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and its confluence with the Snake River. Measured at White Bird, its average discharge is 11,060 cubic feet per second. It is one of the largest rivers in the continental United States without a single dam on its mainstem.
Cities located along the Salmon River include Stanley, Clayton, Challis, Salmon, Riggins, and White Bird. Redfish Lake and Little Redfish Lake near Stanley, which flow into the river via Redfish Lake Creek, are the terminus of the longest Pacific sockeye salmon migration in North America.

Salmon River Scenic Byway | Visit Idaho
The northern end of the Salmon River Scenic Byway begins on the Montana border at the Lost Trail Pass (elevation 6,995 feet). Lewis and Clark came this way in 1805, and the spectacular view from this vantage point has changed little since that famous exploration of the West two centuries ago. The route follows the Salmon River -- also called the River of No Return -- through the Salmon-Challis National Forest through the historic city of Salmon. The river and its forks serve as important natural pathways into Idaho's rugged back country. The deer, elk, and moose that often graze along the hills and meadows that line this road provide a glimpse of the wild country beyond.

The Last Mountain Man Idaho Salmon River's Buckskin Bill
Sylvan Ambrose Buckskin Bill Hart (May 10, 1906 – April 29, 1980) was among the last of the mountain men in the western United States.
The oldest of six children born in Camargo in the Indian Territory, one year before it became Oklahoma, Hart worked in Texas oilfields during the Great Depression. For nearly a half century, from 1932 until his death, he lived in isolated central Idaho, on the Five Mile Bar of the Salmon River in the Frank Church River Of No Return Wilderness.
Hart attended McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, in 1926, then studied petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma in 1927–28, but did not graduate. He purchased fifty acres (20 ha) of land at Five Mile Bar for one dollar,[1] where he built a compound that included a two-story house, blacksmith shop, a stone turret, and a bomb shelter. The defensive structures reflected his sense of continual threat from the federal government, which peaked in 1956 when Howard Zahniser's Wilderness Act threatened to designate the Five Mile section of the Salmon River as a non-habitable Primitive Area, and he was in danger of being evicted.
Hart volunteered to serve in World War II, but due to an enlarged heart, he was assigned to a Boeing plant in Kansas where he worked on the Norden bombsight. Following the war, he returned to his compound and was employed by the National Forest Service. He farmed, hunted and fished for survival, and made his own guns, weapons, clothing and tools.
A lifelong bachelor, Hart died of natural causes at age 73 at his home in 1980. His funeral was held in Grangeville and he was buried at his home at Five Mile Bar. His compound has been preserved as The Buckskin Bill Museum

Salmon River Idaho: Home from a rafting trip
The River of No Return. Heading home from a rafting trip on the day stretch of the Salmon River. Such a beautiful drive we had to make a video.
This is the wet spring of 2011. Everything is a beautiful green, and the water is dirty and high. A beautiful day. Brought to you buy Kookaburra Salmon River Rafting. The Salmon River is protected by Congress, and has no dams for its full length through Idaho. Driving along the Salmon River in the spring gives one the a full sense of the seasons and the natural ebb and flow of an undammed, natural river. If you've ever driven this stretch of the Salmon wild and scenic river, it will be a great flashback.
The Salmon River is called The River of No Return because the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery had to turn back at Pine Creek rapids, and take a long cold trek through the mountains in their journey to the sea. A move with Marilyn Monroe titled River of No Return was shot in the 50's. Though not shot on the actual river, it was a story about traveling down the River of No Return.
The song on this clip is sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford, and is played by the Salmon Idaho radio station, KSRA, each morning to begin their broadcast day. So it is an everyday tune here in Salmon Idaho.
This movie is 7 minutes long, so sit back and take your time to enjoy the ride!
