Mtskheta, Georgia (2019)
We left Stepantsminda early morning. On the way to Borjomi, we stopped to see Ananuri medieval fortress and the ancient town Mtskheta which was the first capital of Georgia. Jvari Monastery and Samtavro Transfiguration Church were the place we visited.

Samtavro St. Nino’s Monastery was built on the place called ‘Zemo Ecclesia’ (Upper Church). It was located in the capital city of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom Iberia Mtskheta in 30s of the 4th century. The first Christian royal couple - King Mirian and Qween Nana are buried here. Since the 480s Samtavro became an Episcopal see. Since the beginning of 19th century it has become a convent.
The present Samtavro Transfiguration Orthodox Church was built in the 1030-1040s in the town Mtskheta. The preserved mural paintings in the altar conch and in the dome are dated to the mid-17th century. The archeological excavations revealed the remains of a large church that had been standing here before 11th century.
Eastwards of the Church there is a small early medieval church of St. Nino. Its mural paintings are dated to 19th century. On the North of the Church there is a three storied bell tower of 15-16th centuries. A cylindrical tower of 18th century is preserved in the wall of the monastery that was restored in 19th century.
Samtavro convent, together with other historical monuments of Mtskheta has been inscribed upon the World Heritage List of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage since 1994.

Mtskheta | Day 3 | 'Solo Travel' 2017 | Georgia
My day 3 in #Georgia country: visited from #Jvari #monastery; #Shio monastery; #Samtavro monastery; #Mtskheta city; #Svetitskhoveli #cathedral; #freedomesquare; #clockleaningtower; #puppet #theatre
At 10:00 in the morning rode to Jvari (means #Cross) monastery. It is located at the rocky mountaintop that confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. There you can see the Mtskheta town (overlooking). It is listed as UNESCO World Heritage site.
About 32 minutes of approx 23.8km from Jvari, we rode to #ShioMgvime monastery but it was closed that time due to lenten season. Shiomghvime means 'the cave of Shio'; Shio means priest.
So instead there, we went to Samtavro a 4th-century built monastery and there is a cemetery as well. There you can see the burials of King Mirian and Queen Nana at the entrance of the monastery.
Next we went to Mtskheta city and roamed the souvenirs market. Then we proceed to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - just a walking distance from the market. Svetitskhoveli cathedral is the 2nd largest church in Georgia in terms of building next to the Holy Trinity cathedral (Sameba). There you can find many tombs of kings and leaders buried inside the cathedral. Svetitskhoveli means the 'Cathedral of the Living Pillar'. Also known as the burial site of Christ's mantle and listed as #UNESCO #World #Heritage #site.
For lunch, went to #Salobio #restaurant and ate #lobio with Georgian #cornbread. It was nice one of Georgia's traditional #foods. There I met a Filipino who at first I thought the guy is a Japanese. hehe, they were great - thank you both of you. Thank you too to Miro for introducing this food to me. For my blog about the traditional food I tasted during my visit in Georgia you check in this link:

Georgia 2018 - Day 5: Sameba & Mtskheta - Old Capital Day Trip
2018-02-28 We went to Sameba or the Holy Trinity Cathedral ( on our fifth day in Tbilisi and bought religious relics from the store in the cathedral. Luckily there was an orthodox priest who blessed the items we both. It felt really good when he blessed us and the items we bought.
We then went to City Sightseeing Tbilisi ( in Freedom Square and booked the Mtskheta - Old Capital Day Trip which starts at 3PM. The trip only costs GEL 40 (approx.. USD 16) and lasts for more or less 4 hours since the location is less than an hour away from the city centre Tbilisi. This trip was like a pilgrimage for us because we got to visit churches that has great significance to the life of Christ and the growth of Christianity.
First stop of the trip was Jvari Monastery ( or the Church of the Cross; where St. Nino erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple. The cross was reportedly able to work miracles and therefore drew pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. A small church was erected over the remnants of the wooden cross.
Second Stop was Svetitskhoveli Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Living Pillar ( It is known as the the burial place of Saint Sidonia holding Christ's Robe/Mantle and the tomb place of Georgian Kings. I felt emotional and blessed to personally see and touch (the glass frame) of the piece of the cross where Christ was crucified. Svetitskhoveli was not only the site of the coronation of the Georgian kings but also served as their burial place.
Next stop was the Samtavro Transfiguration Orthodox Church and Nunnery of St. Nino in Mtskheta where the famous Georgian Monk Gabriel ( was buried as well as the first Christian royal couple - King Mirian and Queen Nana. With many miracles ascribed to Holy Father St. Gabriel, Confessor and Fool for Christ, Gabriel's grave at Mtskheta has attracted an increasing number of pilgrims.
The trip ended in another wine degustation and souvenir shopping. We decided to get another round of Kachapuri and pork barbeque from Machakhela-Samikitno Restaurant.

Samtavisi (Georgian: სამთავისი) is an eleventh-century Georgian Orthodox cathedral in eastern Georgia, in the region of Shida Kartli, some 45km from the nation’s capital Tbilisi. The cathedral is now one of the centers of the Eparchy of Samtavisi and Gori of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The cathedral is located on the left bank of the Lekhura River, some 11km of the town of Kaspi. According to a Georgian tradition, the first monastery on this place was founded by the Assyrian missionary Isidore in 572 and later rebuilt in the 10th century. Neither of these buildings has survived however. The earliest extant structures date to the eleventh century, the main edifice being built in 1030 as revealed by a now lost stone inscription. The cathedral was built by a local bishop and a skilful architect Hilarion who also authored the nearby church of Ashuriani. Heavily damaged by a series of earthquakes, the Cathedral was partially reconstructed in the 15th and 19th centuries. The masterly decorated eastern façade is the only survived original structure.
