The museum was first opened to the public on February 15, 1963 in the Food and Beverage Building, which had been built in 1915 for the Panama–California Exposition.[10] In 1965 the museum was moved to the larger Electrical Building.
On February 22, 1978 the Electrical Building and the Museum were destroyed in an arson fire.[11][12] Several one-of-a-kind aircraft were destroyed, including the Beecraft Wee Bee, the world's lightest aircraft, and her sister craft the Queen Bee. A reproduction of the Spirit of St. Louis, built in 1967 by some of the same people who built the original, was also destroyed, along with more than 50 other aircraft, an extensive collection of artifacts and archives, and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.[12][13] Owen Clarke, the museum's executive director, said of the $4 million in losses, This is unbelievably tragic. When you've spent that length of time acquiring history, building something up to where it had international prestige, then see it all disappear in a couple of hours, what else can it be?[14]

A Walk Through the San Diego Air and Space Museum
This is the fourth of my walk through videos of aviation museums that I visited during my three day planned layover in the Los Angeles area between Parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 2. In addition to these museums, I also have videos for my walk throughs of the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Queen Mary, and the San Diego Automotive Museum (part of the Petersen video). Later in the same trip, I visited the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum and there will be a video for that as well.

San Diego Air & Space Museum - Balboa Park
The San Diego Air & Space Museum
Aviation history is truly a remarkable story, and it all unfolds at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Your journey through the history of flight begins as you stand beneath a model of the Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon of 1783 - the first manned vehicle in recorded history to break the bonds of gravity and lift humans above the Earth.
Rare specimens of aircraft suggest the excitement of air combat in the World War I Gallery. Marvel at the entertaining and dangerous antics of the barnstormers of the 1920s in the Golden Age of Flight Gallery.
Mint condition aircraft in a mint condition museum - a Spitfire Mk. XVI, a Navy F6F Hellcat and an A-4 Skyhawk jet - these beautifully restored airplanes help you appreciate the increasingly complex technology represented in the classic military aircraft of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
The Museum's display of space age technology, like the desire to journey to the stars, may never be finished, for it represents an adventure which the human race has truly just begun.

San Diego Air & Space Museum's 50th Anniversary
The San Diego Air & Space Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary of opening to the public in 2013. The Museum first opened its doors on February 15, 1963 in Balboa Park's Food and Beverage Building. With a quickly growing collection, the Museum moved into the nearby Electric Building in 1965, where it remained until 1978, when a devastating fire destroyed the Museum and its contents. The Museum and the San Diego community came together and immediately began to rebuild and moved into the historic Ford Building in 1980, where the Museum resides today.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum is now California's official air and space museum and education center. The Museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and it was the first aero-themed Museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums.
The Museum is located at 2001 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101. The Museum and gift store are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with admissions until 4:00 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
