Arti u Kultura - Għanafest 2018 imniedi waqt il-festa ta' San Girgor
The 20th edition of Għanafest was launched during the St Gregory festivities in Żejtun, just before the rest of the activities pertaining to the feast kicked off in Marsaxlokk. The festival celebrates local and foreign traditional music and singing while promoting Maltese artists who produce Maltese music. This year, the festival will go back to its original location - the Argotti Botanical Gardens - which were renovated over the course of the year.
“Our islands are enriched with an abundant culture and heritage and Għanafest is a celebration of our musical folklore as a Mediterranean country. This year, Għanafest will be celebrated in a number of localities to promote an accessible and inclusive culture for all. Such festivals are constantly attracting new audiences and help increase appreciation towards Maltese musical and cultural traditions”, reiterated Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici.
Festivals Malta Director Annabelle Stivala said that, “This year will see the launch of a three-year project with the music group SKALD, which will seek to present an innovative take on traditional Maltese folk music (għana). Poetry and music will be interlinked to create something new while still staying true to traditional roots. The project will essentially embrace the traditional with the contemporary. Festivals Malta will be investing in this project, aiming to nurture tradition, support emerging talent while making this tradition attractive to our younger audiences”.
This year’s festival will be held on 22 and 23 June from 7pm and will include a varied programme of għana and Maltese folk music on both nights. It will also include vocalist Cheryl Balzan together with guitarist and songwriter Christian Tanti who will sing songs from their upcoming album on the first night. They will be followed by Kellys Heroes, a Nottingham-based band, whose repertoire encompasses fast and furious Celtic tunes and songs, gentle ballads, contemporary numbers as well as some original material which they play on the accordion, rhythm guitar, and bodhran (an Irish frame drum).
The second night will feature SKALD, a quintet formed recently to breathe life into Maltese literature and culture with its own blend of original music. They will be followed by Seiva, a Portuguese folk trio who play rural music with an urban twist on Portuguese bagpipes and adufe (square drum), percussions, Braguesa, Cavaquinho, and tambourine.
As in past editions, the festival will also feature local produce and artisan markets, making it a great outing for the whole family.
Artistic Director Renzo Spiteri said, “I am very pleased to see that Għanafest is returning to Floriana’s Argotti Gardens. This festival has garnered its deserved attention not only because of its particular content, but also because of the wonderful atmosphere created within these beautiful gardens. Għanafest continues with its commitment to promote Maltese folk, singing to wider audiences while presenting an interesting mix of local singer/songwriters and folk artists from other countries”.
Just as last year, Għanafest is extending its activities to three different localities: Qrendi, Buskett, and Birżebbuġa. On 27 May, Qrendi will host Festa Agrarja and will showcase għana and local folk music as part of its programme. On the evening of 28 June and the morning of 29 June, the festival will continue celebrating folk songs and music during l-Imnarja at Buskett. On the evening of 29 June, Birżebbuġa will also host għana.
Tickets for Għanafest on 22 and 23 June can be bought at the door for €3 per evening while all fringe events are free of charge.
