Carnaval de Oruro - Compilation of Carnival di Oruro (Bolivia)
The Carnival of Oruro is a religious festival dating back more than 2000 years that takes place in Oruro, Bolivia. It is one of UNESCO's Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Originally an indigenous festival, the celebration later was transformed to incorporate a Christian ritual around the Virgin of Candelaria (Virgin of Socavón), which takes place on March 2nd. The traditional Llama llama or Diablada became the leading traditional dance of the festival. Throughout the festival, more than 48 groups of folk dancers specializing in 18 different folk dances perform a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Tunnel every Saturday of the carnival in a traditional parade.
The modern festival demonstrates the ongoing pagan-Catholic blend of religious practice in the region. The carnival starts with a ceremony dedicated to the Virgen del Socavon. Marching bands compete simultaneously in the grotto of Pie de Gallo on Sunday, which is the greeting to the Virgin. The highlight of the festival is the three day and three night parade of 48 groups of folk dancers over a four kilometer route to the sanctuary of the tunnel. Three days prior to this Saturday pilgrimage, people visit the symbolic pagan condor. A week after the pilgrimage, they visit the snake south of the city, the toad to the north and the ants to the east.
The pilgrimage culminates in the enactment of two medieval-style mystery plays. The first is about the Spanish conquest and the other revolves around the classical battle between good and evil, with the Archangel Michael ultimately triumphing over the Devil and the Seven Deadly Sins. The latter play was introduced by Catholic clergy in 1818.
In all, there are over 28,000 dancers, about 10,000 musicians in 150 bands, 400,000 visitors stretching over four miles.

Oruro Carnival
The highest cultural expression of Bolivian folklore, the Oruro Carnival MASTERPIECE OF THE ORAL AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE OF HUMANITY is a religious festival in devotion to the Virgen del Socavón (Our Lady of the Mine Shaft), to whom tribute is given through music and dance. This manifestation of folklore has its origins in ancient Uru Culture and is characterized by its colour, craft in costume design and expressions that converge from various cultures; rituals and traditions from those who participate in this festivity, accompanied by the rhythms of bands that delight the public. This explosion of folklore is prepared with a lot of anticipation and a great number of ceremonies and rituals throughout the year. The most important presentation is the Saturday pilgrimage, when the dancers tour the various city streets ending up in the Sanctuary of the Virgin, where they receive the blessing of the Parrish and then kneel before the image of the virgin.

The Carnival in Oruro
The Oruro Carnival lasts for 10 days each year before Lent in the Andes mountains of western Bolivia. Featuring music, dance and crafts, it is highlighted by a ceremonial parade lasting 20 hours, covering 4 kilometres and involving 20,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians. The carnival reinforces the cultural identity of the community, and attracts more than 400,000 people. You can see some examples at Oruro Photo Gallery to give you yourself a small vision.
Today's carnival has its origins in the great festival of Ito celebrated by the Uru people since pre-Colombian times. The Spanish forbade the Uru rituals in the 17th century, but they continued disguised as Catholic liturgy. Andean gods were integrated into Christian images, the Andean divinities were worshipped as Catholic saints. Aspects of the festival of the Ito have been appropriated and continue to be expressed through a Christian ritual celebrated at Candelmas (February 2).
Ceremonies begin several weeks before Carnaval Oruro itself, with a solemn pledge of loyalty to the Virgin in the sanctuary. From this date on, there are various candlelit processions, and dance groups practice boisterously in the citys's streets.
As well as traditional Bolivian dance groups, such as the Caporales, Llameradas, Morenadas and Tinkus, Oruro's Carnaval Features La Diablada (Dance of the devils). These demonic dancers are dressed in extravagant garb. The design and creation of Diablada customes has become an art form in Oruro, adn several Diablada clubs - consisting of members from all levels of Oruro society- are sponsored by local business. There are anywhere from 40 to 300 dancing participants, whose costumes may cost several hundres dollars each.
