Borneo Pygmy elephant bathing in Kinabatangan River, Sandakan, Sabah Malaysia
Known locally and commonly as ‘Bornean Pygmy Elephants’, they are about a fifth smaller than mainland Indian Elephants but similar in size to populations of Sumatra and the Malaysian Peninsula. They are generally more rotund in appearance with shorter trunks and a smaller rounder face, which makes their ears appear larger. They also have a long tail, which in some individuals reaches all the way down to the ground. Only some males display tusks, which are shorter and straighter than in the mainland elephants.

The Battle of North Borneo took place during the Second World War between Allied and Japanese forces.Part of the wider Borneo campaign of the Pacific War, it was fought between 10 June and 15 August 1945 in North Borneo .The battle involved a series of amphibious landings by Australian forces on various points on the mainland around Brunei Bay and upon islands situated around the bay.Japanese opposition to the landings was sporadic initially, although as the campaign progressed a number of considerable clashes occurred and both sides suffered relatively significant casualties.

The Seafaring General Zheng He Commanded Expeditionary Voyages Borneo Footprint
Zheng He(Cheng Ho) commanded expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Western Asia and East Africa from 1405 to 1433.
The Seafaring General Zheng He’s Maritime expedition of Sungai Cheng Ho Sandakan in 1421. And Sungai Batangan “Agop Batu Tulug”. Its an archaeological site in the Malaysian state of Sabah and refers to a group of several caves in a steep limestone cliffs that stands 39meters high in the Kinabatangan district.
Inside the caves contained more than a hundred years & more than 125 ancient log coffins. dating back 200-250 years, watched over by bats and swallows. Batu Putih village can be viewed from here as well.
All coffins inside the caves were made from belian (Eusideroxylon zwageri) Hardwood, and decorated with carvings of buffalo head, crocodile, house lizard and snake. The carvings reflect the Myths and legends of the Kinabatangan people. For example, a crocodile is related to death and the power darkness while the Bugang bird, Dog, Rooster and Deer were friends of their heroes.
The coffins resemble of the Chinese General Cheng Ho settled in the area as Chinese artifacts were found among the remains. It is believed that this type of funeral culture was brought by traders from Mainland China and Indochina to northern Borneo, since similar wooden coffins were also discovered in these countries. Verification of early Chinese descent to this place.

History of Kota Kinabalu (1882-2014)
History of The City of Kota Kinabalu (1882-2014)
In 1882, BNBC (British North Borneo Company) founded a settlement, which was already inhabited by Bajau people, on Gaya Island. In 1897, this first settlement was burned and destroyed by the indigenous Bajau-Suluk freedom fighter Mat Salleh.
After the destruction, BNBC decided to relocate the settlement to the mainland at Gantian Bay (now Sepangar Bay) in 1898. However that location was found to be unsuitable and in July 1899, Henry Walker, a Land Commissioner, identified a 30-acre site opposite Gaya Island as a replacement for Gantian. This fishing village named Api-Api was chosen due to its proximity to the North Borneo Railway and its natural port that provided good anchorage, which was up to 24 feet deep.
By the end of 1899, construction had started on shoplots, a pier and government buildings. This new administrative centre was renamed Jesselton after Sir Charles Jessel, who was the then Vice-Chairman of BNBC.
Eventually, Jesselton became a major trading post of North Borneo, dealing in rubber, rattan, honey, and wax. The North Borneo Railway was used to transport goods to the Jesselton harbour. The Malay and Bajau uprisings during those times were not uncommon, and BNBC worked to quell the long-standing threat of piracy in the region.
Jesselton was razed by the Japanese and suffered more destruction when the Allies bombed it in 1945. During the Japanese occupation, it was again renamed Api. Several rebellions against the Japanese military administration took place in Api.
One major rebellion of Kinabalu Guerillas of local inhabitants occurred on 10 October 1943. Japanese forces quelled the rebellion after its leader, Albert Kwok, was arrested and executed in 1944. At the later stages of the war, what remained of the town was destroyed again by Allied bombings day and night for over six months as part of the Borneo Campaign in 1945. The war in North Borneo ended with the official surrender of the Japanese 37th Army by Lieutenant General Baba Masao in Labuan on 10 September 1945.
After the war, the British North Borneo Company returned to administer Jesselton but was unable to finance the huge costs of reconstruction. They gave control of North Borneo to the British Crown on 18 July 1946. The new colonial government elected to rebuild Jesselton as the capital of North Borneo instead of Sandakan, which had also been destroyed by the war. The Crown Colony administration designed a plan, later known as the Colonial Office Reconstruction and Development Plan for North Borneo: 1948–1955”, to rebuild North Borneo. This plan provided £6,051,939 for the rebuilding of infrastructure in North Borneo.
When Crown Colony of North Borneo together with Sarawak, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya formed the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, it became known as Sabah, and Jesselton remained its capital. On 22 December 1967, State Legislative Assembly under Chief Minister Tun Mustapha bin Datu Harun passed a bill renaming Jesselton to Kota Kinabalu. The city was upgraded to city status on 2 February 2000.

CosmosByAminAyub - Kota Kinabalu
Sabah - Kota Kinabalu & Kundasang in a glimpse.
Some trips are made for you to embrace the city vibes while others are made for you to embrace all that nature got to offer. Kota Kinabalu is filled with what I personally call the gift of nature. With picturesque islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park scattered minutes away from the mainland, perfect for island hopping to the magnificent Mount Kinabalu definitely not for those who have a weak heart and legs ofcourse. It is one destination filled with surprises, not to mention the extremely unpredictable weather. Nonetheless, you will always find something to do there be it tanning along the beaches, mountain climbing, cafe hopping, zip-lining or maybe just visit heritage sites or even the dairy farm. Kota Kinabalu is one place to visit as a family!
All that and more images can also be found on my website as follows:

SITANGKAI: Venice of the South
So glad and fortunate to visit the southernmost place in the Philippines and it's just less than an hour boat ride away from Malaysia. Dubbed as Venetian Municipality of the ???????? due to the use of boats as primary transportation, although footbridges connect one house to another. Grateful to the family of incumbent Mayor of Sitangkai and to the marines for accomodating us during this brief but memorable trip. Basketball is very much alive even in the farthest part of the archipelago.
The Philippines is the leading supplier of Eucheuma seaweeds, accounting for about 80% of total world supply. Seaweeds are one of the country's most successful fishery products, but it is essentially a small-grower industry, providing livelihood in poor coastal areas. The town of Sitangkai accounts for more than half of the country's seaweed production, with at least 3,000 metric tons of dried seaweed produced monthly. Seaweed farming in the town covers roughly 2,500 hectares, with 60,000 more hectares with a potential for cultivation.

Communist Vietnam?
The streetscapes of Ho Chi Minh City provide some very mixed messages to those with a conventional view of what communism is. The symbol of the hammer and sickle is displayed alongside the logos and brand names of every multinational corporation imaginable. I don't think these are the kind of contradictions Marx had in mind in when he wrote
Mabul Island, Malaysia (1080HD) Travel Video
For more great information, photos and video about Malaysia, see PleaseTakeMeTo's Malaysia Travel Guide -
Pulau Mabul lies in the Celebes Sea, 30km from the town of Semporna on mainland Sabah. A short 45 minute boat ride from the coast, laid-back Mabul is the diving gateway to the states group of diving islands, Sidapan, Kapalai and Mabul.
Initially popular due to its close proximity to the renowned waters of Sidapan, Pulau Mabul has steadily gained a reputation as a unique diving destination in it's own right.
A small oval Island perched on the edge of a 2 kilometer square reef, Mabul is loved for its sandy beaches, rustic charm, and shallow water diving.
A complete contrast to Sipadans population of barracudas, turtles, and whale sharks, the shallow waters of Mabul are home to one of the worlds richest concentrations of exotic small marine creatures. Here, divers of all levels can simply ride the gentle currents though coral gardens populated by cuttlefish, gobies, harlequin shrimps, bob-tail squids, and boxer crabs. Yet despite the petite size of its extraordinary inhabitants, the waters of Mabul boast an even greater diversity of species compared to those of Sidapan.
Visitors to Pulau Mabul can choose from a range of resorts, or even stay on the converted drilling platform.
There is plenty to do on this special island in between dives, such as sea-kayaking, mountain biking, beach volleyball, or simply enjoying the breeze.
