SANDAKAN - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
Sandakan formerly known at various times as Elopura, is a town in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. It is located on the east coast of the state in the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. The town has an estimated population of 157,330 while the surrounding municipal area has a total population of 396,290.
Before the founding of Sandakan, Sulu Archipelago was the source of dispute between Spain and the Sultanate of Sulu for economic dominance in the region. Sandakan began to prosper when the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) started to build a new settlement in 1879, developing it into an active commercial and trading centre as well as making it the main administrative centre for North Borneo.
Sandakan is one of the main ports for oil, tobacco, coffee, sago, and timber exports. Other economic activities include fishing, ship building, eco-tourism, and manufacturing. Among the tourist attractions in Sandakan are Sandakan Heritage Museum, Sandakan Cultural Festival, Sandakan War Memorial, Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands National Park, and Gomantong Caves.
Sandakan Day Memorial 2015 (70th Anniversary of the Sandakan Ranau Death Marches)
August 15 every year, families of the fallen heroes travel to Sandakan to take part and observe the memorial service to remember their love ones. More than 2000 Australian and British prisoners of war died in the Sandakan Prison Camp and in the infamous Sandakan-Ranau Death marches during the Second World War.
More than 200 people were present at the Memorial service which included Sir Peter Cosgrove, the Governor General of Australia, Ms Vicky Treadell, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr. Rod Smith, the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Raymond Tan, Datuk James Wong, President of Sandakan Municipal Council and several other state dignities. The solemn service began at 7.00 am and lasted slightly more than 2 hours.
Refreshments were served at the pavilion grounds after the service.
After the fall of Singapore and Borneo to the Japanese, a Prisoner of War Camp was established just outside of Sandakan to house approximately 750 British and more than 1650 Australian prisoners who were sent to the camp during the period 1942-43. In 1945, when the Japanese started to realize that the war may have been lost, and the Allies were closing in, the emaciated prisoners were force marched, in three separate groups, to the village of Ranau in the jungle, 260 km away, under the shadows of Mount Kinabalu.
This year, the Australian party also brought along their own Bugler, Corporal David Mathews who played the Last Post. In military tradition, the Last Post is the bugle call that signifies the end of the day's activities.

Sandakan Memorial Park Borneo - World War 2 History
Today we will be visiting sandakan memorial park in borneo and learning the history of what happend here during world war 2.
This memorial park is built on a prisoner of war camp that the japanese created to hold allied soldiers. These allied soldiers were from countries like australia britain malaysian and many more countries.
The japanese forced all prisoners of war to build them a airfield aswell as railways to be able to get a foothold in the war. The prisoners were treated very badly and many of them starved or died of disease or tiredness. After suffering so much the troops still tried there best to halt the japanese even in these bad conditions by sabataging machinery and other things to slow them down.
The japanese also took the rest of the prisoners of war on death marches which started from sandakan and ended in ranau which was around 260km. Most of the pow's died during these marches.
We did not no about anything that happend in malaysia during world war 2 so this was a massive learning experience for us on our history.
These types of days are quite sad when you read what happend here but its very important to learn about it and to pay your respects to the sacrifices made for us by many people

Welcome to Sandakan | Malaysia [HD]
Hello everyone ! So here's my first video about places and travel around the world. For the first video I will introduce my hometown, a historical city located on the northeast coast of Borneo.
As for today, I visited Kg Sim-Sim, that is famous for its grilled fish and other seafood in Sandakan. Then I had a short walk around the city with a friend, Isran and we also visited the central market, with variety of foods and stuff from fresh fruits to fresh seafood.
We also had the chance to taste the famous Soto Makassar, an Indonesian traditional soup originating from Makassar itself. Why go to Makassar when you can taste it yourself here at Soto Makassar run by Hj Alimuddin.
Our next stop is the Puh Jih Shih temple, a well-known Buddhist temple located at the hilltop of Tanah Merah at Sandakan Bay. It offers panoramic views of the city.
My last stop is at Sandakan Memorial Park. The park is a memorial site built in the former grounds of the former Sandakan camp. The site is dedicated as a memory for all prisoners in the camp who died during the Sandakan Death Marches, and to those died during a march to Ranau, Sabah during the World War 2.
There are many other attractions that you can visit when you are at Sandakan as I listed below :
- Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
- Agnes Keith House
- Turtle Islands
- Rainforest Discovery Centre
- Sandakan Crocodile Farm
- Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
- Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
and many more !
Hope all of you enjoy this video and stay tune for more upcoming adventure !

DEATH MARCH North Borneo 1945 | The Ring Ladies
