The Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge, Sanjiang, Guangxi, China;
The bridge is a few decades old. Its structure is unusual and rather beautiful. It has five solid stone pillars, each with a wooden pavilion on top. The bridge is about 64 meters (210 feet) long, 3.4 meters (11 feet) wide and 10 meters (33 feet) high. Wooden pillars run the course of the bridge and support the roof. It is said that the whole structure is built without a single nail or metal support; the planks and beams are held together using joints. In Mandarin, the bridge is called a Fengyu Qiao or Wind and Rain Bridge. It is one of about 100 such bridges in the area, and is said to be the biggest. It is interesting architecturally.
Such bridges are meant to shelter the villagers in bad weather and otherwise are places to sit together and enjoy the scenery. There is a fee of about 30 RMB for seeing the Chengyang Bridge, and women on the bridge sell embroidery and cotton blankets boldly patterned in black and white. One may also be able to buy shiny blue-black Dong jackets, dyed with indigo and varnished in egg white as protection against mosquitoes. Dance shows may be performed for an extra fee.
From the bridge, you can watch the river and the people going about their activities. You can see a tight group of two or three story houses. The houses are overlooked by a square drum tower. For an excursion while visiting the bridge, there's a trail from the main road up to two pavilions overlooking Chengyang. These give views of the villages nestled among vivid green fields. From the bridge, you can observe the river and watch the people going about their daily activities. Spring Festival vibes in the village: Hundred family feast in Sanjiang
The wooden architecture of the Dong people in Sanjiang, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, did not disappoint. Entering Guanxiao Village, you pass through impressive wooden homes built from local fir trees. The moss-covered stairs leading to the village's main reception area showcase detailed stone patterns and a multi-tiered drum tower looms over you at the pinnacle. Standing on the top, you can see dozens of homes spread across the lush mountains.

Sanjiang Day One
Chengyang is a Dong village near Sanjiang in Guangxi, China. After talking to the proprietor of our hotel, I learned it was especially popular with French tourists ever since some sort of musical exchange between the French and the Dong in 1983. Drum towers and Wind and Rain Bridges abound.
What is a Drum Tower Sanjian, China
Sanjian is the closest area for tourists to stay if they want to visit Dong villages near Guilin. It is also possible to spend several nights in Dong villages that have provisions for tourists.
We stayed at the Fengyuqiao International Hotel located next to a new Drum Tower. Nobody spoke English and it would have been frustrating if we had been there without a guide. The Drum Tower Square is the local hangout in the evening but was empty in late afternoon. Hopefully, the real Dong Villages would be more interesting.
A Drum Tower was usually placed in the center of an old Chinese city or village, and held signal drums. For some reason, Drum Towers and Wind, Rain Bridges are a symbol of the Dong People.

Overland Southwest China 4 Zhaoxing Dong Village
We continued our travels further into China's rugged southwest and went into the Provence of Guizhou. Zhaoxing is another Dong minority village and it is absolutely fabulous! Cobble stone streets, farmers working the fields and a pretty wild bar scene, read: drunk Chinese puking on the streets at midnight. We tried oil tea, wonderful, and hiked up to a smaller village Jitiang with some really cool Drum towers and not a tourist in sight.

Famous Dong Wind and Rain Bridge, China
The famous Wind and Rain Bridge in Chengyang is considered to be the most beautiful and best preserved bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are 108 such structures in Sanjiang County but this one is the ultimate symbol of the Dong minority people.
Built in 1916, Wood and Rain Bridge spans the Linxi River and was constructed without nails of wood and stones. There are five tower-like kiosks on the bridge which are said to resemble the flapping wings of birds. Very gorgeous...
