US Postal Service will deliver letters to and from Santa
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Letters to Santa Claus are piling up at post offices across the country.
We've always had letters where the children send them to Santa Claus and we get them delivered to Santa Claus,” said Joseph Sandoval with the U.S. Postal Service.
For the past couple of years, Mr. Claus has had some free time to write back to all his own pals. He joined the North Pole Postmark Program.
With the program, USPS employees help get letters to Santa in the North Pole. However, there is a catch to make sure that kids will get a letter postmarked from the North Pole.
There are a few important steps parents have to follow. Click here to learn more.
Santa Claus Indiana where Christmas is Everyday!
This tiny town of Santa Claus makes it feel like Christmas all year long. It was established in 1856 when the townsfolk heard sleigh bells outside of a town meeting. A child thought it was Santa Claus and shouted the name. That's exactly how the town came to be known as Santa Claus. I've been here twice now, once at Christmas time and I had to go back for a visit in the Summer just to see how it is. Even though this is a small town there is quite a bit to see here. They have a golf course at Christmas lake if you want to squeeze that in while your family goes shopping. Frosty's Fun Center has miniature golf, food and a little arcade. Santa's Lodge has just added a zip line course. A ride can be taken on one of the horses at Santa's Stables. The town is visited by many each year because of the theme park Holiday World. This is actually two parks in one but only one admission is required for entry. It is an amusement park and a water park so it seems like you can't possibly have all the fun in only one day. If you love history then the area is full of it. Holiday World began as Santa Land and became the U.S.'s first theme park in 1946. Head over to the Museum for a great showcase of how the town began and how it continues the tradition. While you are there you can check out the towns first post office, a church from 1880 and a huge Santa statue. Nearby is Candy Castle. This was the first themed attraction in the U.S. when it opened in 1935. They have all sorts of candy in there. Some of it is made in house but they also have candy from all over in case you are picky. Just outside of town sits Lincoln's Boyhood Home National Memorial and Park. Here you can catch a glimpse of what life was like during Abraham Lincoln's days as a boy. You can see where his cabin was, walk the grounds where he did and enjoy the Trail of Twelve Stones . The stones have been taken from various places across the nation where Lincoln had something significant happen. Each stone has a marker explaining what that even was. This is definitely the kind of place that makes you want to keep going back.
The town receives over 15,000 letters to Santa each year. A group of volunteers known as Santa's Elves replies to them all. It costs nothing more than the stamp you used to mail your letter there. If you're in town though you can write your letter and drop it off at the town's original post office for free. All the materials are provided there.

I love to vacation as much as the next person, but since I have a full-time job and a limited number of the vacation days to use, I need to get creative. This summer I wanted to spend more time exploring destinations close to Chicago by taking weekend trips and just and was super pumped to open my summer season with a family trip to a Santa Claus, Indiana.Family weekend in Santa Claus, Indiana
Have you heard of Santa Claus in Indiana? According to some websites, it is where Santa Claus spends his summers and where your child’s “letters to Santa” go to, but could it really be true? How come have I never heard of this place? I started asking around and was shocked to find out that many of my Chicagoland friends have no idea of the magical place that screams Christmas just a drive away from the windy city.
I asked around but most of my Chicagoland friends had no idea of the magical place that screams Christmas just over in the next state. I was intrigued!
Santa Claus, Indiana is a town with a population of about 2,500 people. The town was originally called Santa Fe. When its citizens asked for a post office in 1856, they were told that Indiana already had a Santa Fe post office and that they would have to change their town’s name. It became Santa Claus, IN. and it also has The Santa Claus post office that gets on average half-million-holiday cards and roughly 10,000 letters from children (Santa’s address is 45 North Kringle Place, Santa Claus, IN 47579, if you are asking). This place has landmarks like Santa Claus Museum, Original Santa Claus Statue, Candy Castle, and a great Holiday World Theme Park.
This town is all about Christmas with the street names, local shops, and great local attractions, yet it’s a small town with fewer crowds and very accommodating to the families with little kids.
HOLIDAY WORLD THEME PARK IN SANTA CLAUS, INDIANA
If you spend a day at the Holiday World you will ask yourself “Why wouldn’t you come here every year?”
Santa Claus Land opened in 1946 as the theme park with a toy shop, toy displays, a restaurant, themed children’s rides, and, of course, Santa! The park grew over the years and in 1984 Santa Claus Land expanded to also include Halloween and 4th of July and changed its name to the Holiday World. Later the Splashin’ Safari Water Park came along covering nearly 40 acres and features two water coasters and wave pools, a river, family raft rides and water slides.
Today The Holiday World includes Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, 4th of July, as well as the Splashin’ Safari and that means one day will most likely not be enough to experience this park to the fullest.
There are great areas designed especially for the little kids with lots of exciting rides. I love that these play areas are bit out of the way to make it easy for me as a parent to follow my toddler around the playground or sit back and enjoy my refreshment.
And speaking of the refreshment, the Holiday World in Indiana has FREE unlimited soft drinks and the variety is amazing and cold every single time!
The other thing you will absolutely love is the free sunscreen stations because you know you will forget to re-apply the sunscreen even if you bring it with.
As you can imagine the food is essential when you spend a whole day at the theme park, but imagine having Goblin burger or Safari pizza for breakfast, Thanksgiving lunch, and Mrs. Claus’s cookies for an afternoon snack?
Each section has a restaurant that compliments the theme.
And let’s not forget about the roller coasters – they are breathtaking!

STORYLINE
SANTA COMES TO TOWN
It might still be six weeks before Christmas Day but in the small village of Himmelpfort in Germany the festive season has officially started as the country's biggest Christmas post office opened on Monday (10 NOV 2008).
The Christmas post office is expected to receive hundreds of thousands of letters addressed to Santa Claus.
Every year the town of Himmelpfort, the official residence of Santa Claus in Germany, receives letters from children from all over the world sending their wishes to Santa. They came from as far away as Australia and Japan.
Deutsche Post opens seven special Christmas post offices around Germany every year, where children can send their letters.
So far this year the Himmelpfort branch has received 2140 wishes.
Last year the post office received and answered around 280-thousand letters to Santa Claus from children in more than 80 countries.
Santa Claus, and his helpers of course, answer the letters in sixteen languages from as many as 95 countries.
The post office, in Brandenburg, is the only Christmas post office in the former communist German state.
The first Santa letters were sent to Himmelpfort by two German children in 1984.
They were answered by a post office employee who did not want to send them back undelivered.
The number of letters received in Himmelpfort has been growing at such a rate that in 1995 the German post had to employ additional staff to help answer them all.

STORYLINE
Santa officially opened his post office in the German village of Himmelspfort (meaning Heaven's Gate) on Tuesday.
Hundreds of thousands of letters addressed to Father Christmas arrive each year in the village north of Berlin, in the eastern state of Brandenburg.
While some of the children wish for peace and happiness, most request toys, dolls and the latest gadgets.
A team of Santa's Elves respond to each and every one - not just in German, but 16 other languages.
Not only do they reply to every single letter, they even send little presents to the children.
Santa said that this year, he had even managed to learn Mandarin so he could answer mail sent by children from China.
The first Santa letters were sent to Himmelspfort by two German children in 1984.
They were answered by a post office employee who did not want to send them back undelivered.
But the number of letters received in Himmelspfort grew at such a rate that in 1995, additional staff were employed to answer them all.
Last year, the post office received and answered more than 280-thousand letters from children in more than 80 countries.
Most of the letters addressed to Santa at Christmas post office, 16798 Himmelspfort come from Germany, but children from Russia, Poland and Scandinavia are also known to have posted their wish lists.
In the past years, even letters from Australia and Japan, as well as some African countries, reached the German village.
The Himmelspfort office is one of seven Christmas post office branches in Germany where children can send their letters.

Santa Claus, Indiana
Santa Claus is a town in Spencer County, Indiana, United States, in the southwestern part of the state. Located in Carter, Clay and Harrison Townships, it sits between Interstate 64 and the Ohio River. The population was 2,481 at the 2010 census.
The town was established in 1854 and known as Santa Fe. In 1856, when the town was working to establish a post office, the United States Postal Service refused their first application as there was already a Santa Fe established with the USPS. Several town meetings were held, during which the name Santa Claus was selected.

Training to be Santa Claus
Santa Claus has come to town.
Dozens of times over, as it turns out.
More than 100 St. Nicks attend class at the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School in Midland, Mich.
The Santas, as well as some Mrs. Clauses, receive instruction on makeup, wardrobe, sign language, reindeer care and communication during the three-day seminar.
Tom Valent is the Santa Claus School Dean:
It's an honour to graduate from Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School. They can put that on their resume. We're set up as a non profit organisation. We don't screen our Santas. We don't do background checks. We just train them on how to be the best Santa that they can be.
The Howard school bills itself as the longest continuously running Santa Claus school in the world. Tuition is $425 for new students and $395 for returnees.
Now, the Santa army is deployed all over the world, just in time for Christmas.
Paul Headley, from Hamilton, Indiana says:
It puts a little song in your heart, and a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye. Talking to these guys, it's overwhelming.
Fred Osther is from Norway. He says : And you also have to make friends with other Santas that could help you out when you have some problem as a Santa.
Also among the 100-plus Santas is Doug Dodge, from Burlington, Mass.:
It's an awesome responsibility. You've got to portray your Santa honest, integrity.
Cliff Snider attended the Santa School. He's back in North Carolina now, making his usual rounds, including a recent meet-and-greet in Raleigh.
Sitting in his high-backed Santa chair, Snider had the Moser children on his lap - Landon, 5, and Ava, 2.
Ava stares in amazement at his white moustache and beard, glistening after a light coating of glitter spray that Snider tells kids is frost.
You can touch it. You want to feel it? Snider asks the little girl.
Yeah, she says sticking her right index finger just under his nose, before quickly looking away as her mother, Virginia, laughed.
It's real, isn't it? he says, smiling.
Snider has portrayed Santa Claus since 1962, but when he made his first trip to Midland about 30 years later, he was more than a little nervous.
He says : Tom Valent, the director of the school, told me something I never will forget. Because I told him, I said, 'Tom, I'm not sure I'll measure up to these guys,' and he said, 'Cliff, you remember that when you go back to High Point, North Carolina, you're Santa Claus. You be the very best Santa Claus that you can be there. That's all you have to worry about.' And that's all I've worried about is being the best Santa Claus that I can be.
Some at this year's three-day seminar were first-timers, but quite a few Santas were, as Snider calls them, returning alumni.
Here is a hotel ballroom the Santas receive a talk from an accountant on best tax practices, because, after all, Santa must report to the Internal Revenue Service.
Other topics included the history of Santa, resume writing and techniques designed to help them nab the perfect Santa gig.
Valent, who is an engineer and executive at a construction company, first came to the nonprofit school as a student in the 1970s, when its annual sessions were held in nearby Bay City.
Charles W. Howard founded the school in 1937. It later moved to Michigan from New York state and has been run since 1987 by Valent and his wife, Holly, in Midland, about 100 miles north of Detroit.
Valent says :
We can't teach people all there is to know about Santa Claus in this short time. But we can just throw things out there and develop their interest, and they'll be thinking about it for a long time.
These ' Santa ambassadors' are paving the way for the man himself to appear from Lapland in just over a week's time.
