Kyle Dempster about Engilchek Ghost Town (Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan)
Engilchek (Inylchek) is a village in Sary-Jaz valley, located 150 km away from Karakol and close to border with China. It lies at the head of one of the few good roads into the southeast of the province and is therefore a base for mountaineers and serious hikers. The Engilchek Glacier is about 50 km to the east from the town...

Road to Sary-Djaz. Intro
Visit Karakol project made an expedition to Sary-Jazz valley aiming to explore tourism opportunities and potential of this remote and less visited, but sightly valley. Few families still live there and one of the largest settlements is Enilchek lost city, which attracts many tourists by its mystery. In Soviet times there was a plan to launch a huge manufactory processing non-ferrous and ferrous metals.
Sary-Jazz - is a unique place where you can fully retire and escape from bustle, in an embrace of beauty, tranquility and majesty of the valleys and mountain ranges.

Karakol
Karakol. Kyrgyzstan roads in winter! My beautiful Kyrgyzstan!
From Karakol to Tyup!
Engilchek: Soviet Mining Ghost Town
This Soviet mining ghost town is located in the Sary-Jaz Valley, which is one of the most isolated areas on our planet… As Engilchek is close to the border with China, it is a restricted military zone and one needs permission to visit the area. Yes, it is in the middle of nowhere, but there are still military checkpoints that one must pass through along the way (even if you must do as I did and wake the soldiers up and make them get dressed to lift the barricades). To be fair, the soldiers likely did not anticipate many mine explorers arriving at dawn and they weren’t keen on being out in the ice and snow, preferring to hunker down and sleep through the winter despite the primitive conditions of their living quarters.
After one leaves the town of Karakol in Kyrgyzstan, there are no fuel stations or people (aside from a couple of herder’s shacks) for the drive of 150 kilometers to Engilchek. A good portion of the journey will be through mountain passes covered in snow and ice, so one had better be prepared because the going will NOT be fast and if something goes wrong, no one is going to be coming along to help you out. I was only able to secure permission for a window of 24 hours in the restricted area and so I left Karakol just after 3 AM and drove for 7 or 8 hours to reach Engilchek around noon (I had to stop at the military checkpoints, dig out snow drifts, put more gasoline in the Lada Niva, etc.). Fuel was a bit of a problem as the Lada 4WD does not get great gas mileage and, as I mentioned above, there is absolutely nowhere to get fuel along the way. I tried to find gas cans for sale in Karakol, but I could not locate any. So, I had to buy a bunch of large plastic water bottles, empty them out and then fill them with gasoline at the Gazprom station in town. I cut off the top of a plastic soda bottle and used that as a funnel to run the gasoline in. Literally, the entire trunk of the Lada was full to the top with gallons and gallons of gasoline in plastic jugs. Probably not the safest way to travel, but what can one do… Perhaps needless to say, I got back to Karakol very late, just as the window of 24 hours was closing.
As for the town of Engilchek itself, mining started in earnest here in 1980. It was primarily tin that was mined, but tungsten, molybdenum and other minerals are also present. As I mentioned in the video, it is hard to believe in looking at the site now, but this was a choice posting in the Soviet Union. Young workers arrived from across the countries of the Soviet Union with the intent of settling down in Engilchek and having a good career. Just as the workers at the Chernobyl nuclear site enjoyed a nice life in the neighboring town of Pripyat, workers in other important industries (such as mining) were also taken good care of (relatively speaking) in the Soviet Union. And so it was in Engilchek. Available homes of a decent size, schools, playgrounds, a hospital and even a small airport... Compared to conditions in other parts of the Soviet Union, one could live well in Engilchek.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, however, things unraveled quickly in Engilchek. Engilchek may have felt like it was a long way away from the rest of the world, but that didn’t mean that the rest of the world didn’t impact Engilchek... I can only imagine what the miners and their families were thinking as they were forced to give up and to make the long drive back over the mountain passes to face a completely changed world, leaving the broken dreams of Engilchek behind them forever.

*****
Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

KYRGYZSTAN | 8K
#kyrgyzstan #timelapse #8K
With this video, I want you to explore in ultra-high definition and through the technique of Timelapse, the incredible and variety of landscapes in this almost unknown country in Central Asia.
During the first part of the trip I explored with Visit Karakol and landscape photographers, Albert Dros, the south region around Lenin Peak, Arslanbob and Sary-Chelek, in the second part I hiked few days around Karakol Valley, visiting Ala-Kul an alpine lake at 3.500m and Sary-Jaz Valley close to China’s borders. My goal with this film is to inspire you to visit and explore this beautiful country, so I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it.
Geeks part:
I came back with 5TB of data, 42.000 Raw, which converted in 107 Timelapse; I also made 6 Tavel Journals showing the behind the scene and the travel involved. The edit of this film took around two months.
To shoot the Timelapse in 8K I used the Sony A7RIII with various Canon lenses, 16-35 f/4L, 24-70 f/4L, and 70-200 f/4L, the motion was created with the Rhino RŌV Pro Traveler and the Dynamic Perception Stage One and R.
To film the Travel Journals, I used the Sony A7III with the Samyang 24mm f/2.8 and the Zhiyun crane M.
Feel free to drop a comment and let me know if you have any questions about the film or the trip.
