Ogeechee Railway to Sylvania, GA
March 8, 2019
We head to rural east central Georgia to see the Ogeechee Railway in action. During the day, the SW8 takes a tank car and three loaded hoppers of limestone to the fertilizer plant and a quarry from the NS interchange in Ardmore, GA to the end of the line in Sylvania, GA. This line was the former mainline of the Savannah & Atlanta Railway that ran from Camak to Savannah with part of the line severed between Sylvania and Waynesboro. Two portions of the former S&A are currently part of NS with one section between Camak and Waynesboro and the other section between Ardmore and Savannah. Also, the Ogeechee Railway's SW8 was recently repainted from the familiar blue paint into a red, black, and white paint scheme and renumbered from 101 to 6707. This engine was originally a Canadian Pacific engine before being bought by the Ogeechee Railway.

NS Greenville District 5/28/13: Savannah and Atlanta Through the Peach State
Late in the night of Monday, May 27th, a huge piece of valuable information came up in a group saying that NS 1065, the Savannah and Atlanta heritage engine, was leading Macon, GA to Linwood, NC manifest 118. Needless to say, planning was done quickly, and I was off to bed. I woke up, got ready, grabbed breakfast, and sat at Oakwood to keep an eye on the intermediate signal in case the train was early.
Not long after I arrived, NS 154 called a clear at Grif, so I set up and shot. Running about two hours early, the northbound manifest was led by NS D9-40CW 9940 and NS SD60s 6664 and 6676. Tim held his arm out the window saying hello as he blew for the Main Street crossing. I watched as the typical hoppers, tanks, boxcars, and gondolas of 154 passed. Notice the Conrail gondola near the end of the train shaking violently...
Time continued, and more information flowed. Apparently, 118 was called to change crews at 7:45am at Jefferson Street in downtown Atlanta and was switching Chamblee at 9:30. Confirmation came out of Norcross that 118 was moving north and 1065 was indeed leading. So Jordan joined me at Flowery Branch, and we waited. A few minutes before 118's arrival, two conductors from the Charlotte District arrived to chase.
At 10:06am, we heard, Approach Allen 1 to 1, NS 118, out, and all became silent. Rounding the curve south at the south end of downtown Flowery Branch, a tuxedo-black painted engine blasted its horn over the Lights Ferry Road crossing. It dropped down the hill and back up, blowing for the remaining crossings in downtown. Rapidly slowing, 118 was preparing to stop and meet southbound manifest 153 at Grif. We watched the manifest roll slowly to a stop, the slack adjusting to a stretched position. Then, we walked to first cleared crossing and drove away.
The interstate is an invaluable tool for chasing trains, and it proved so on this day. We hurriedly made our way to downtown Lula, where we met Casey. The crossing bells rung, lights activated, and gates came down, and again, an engine nearly in Southern colors rounded the curve. Passing under the Southern Railway wooden bridge, NS 118 flew north. Again, we headed for the interstate.
Unfortunately, the route Highway 365 takes as compared to the Piedmont mainline is much longer, so even at interstate speeds, we were no match for the burly AC power, the light train, and the steep downgrade. We got to Lula, sat, listened, talked, and decided to head our separate ways. I enjoyed my peach milkshake from Chick-fil-A, and it reminded me of the joys of seeing a tuxedo engine in its home state leading a train over Southern territory in 2013. That joy is what the heritage program is all about...
