Things to do in Hermanus South Africa ep 6 Visit the old Harbour
Hermanus is an awesome little town close to Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of Africa.
The plans were put into action to build a new harbour. These plans were put on halt as there was no funding available during what became known as the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
It was only in 1939 that they could start with the construction of the southern breakwater (the present one), which again had to be placed on hold when a global war, known as World War II, broke out in 1939 and lasted until August 1945.
Hermanus, known as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, plays host to thousands of visitors (2014 we welcomed over 100 000 visitors) who flock to the seaside resort to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in music, enjoy great food and enjoy the many activities available during the festival .
The Whales are always the star performers at the festival and will be joined on land by great food, quality crafters, great sport events, 3 day coaching clinic, kids entertainment, a Music stage with over 20 artists performing over the festival, Marine ECO Village, Vintage Car Show and thousands of people celebrating Spring in the most beautiful place on earth - Hermanus
This short video highlights the town''s old harbour, some shops and underwater scene's from Dave's pool.
History of Hermanus, Western Cape South Africa.
Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service [2]), is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring and is a popular retirement location. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early-December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum houses an exhibition of photos by T. D. Ravenscroft that depicts the history of Hermanus. The Whale Museum houses a skeleton of a whale and shows an audio-visual presentation of whales and dolphins twice daily.

#Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service), is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for Southern Right whale watching during the southern winter to spring seasons, and is a popular retirement location, too. Although the Southern Right whale is the most prolific species in the bay, it is not the only one that visits these shores. The whales can be seen from the cliffs all along the coast from as early as June and usually depart in early-December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum houses an exhibition of photos by T. D. Hermanus lies along Walker Bay on the south coast of the Western Cape. It is located about 115 km southeast of Cape Town and is connected to the Mother City by the R43 highway (or coastal R44 scenic route) and N2 motorway. The R43 continues to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa. Hermanus is 40 km from Gansbaai, a famous spot where one can dive amongst the Great White Sharks. It is also notable that Hermanus still boasts a historic railway station building without a railway line. The founders of the town decided not to lay any tracks as this would have made Hermanus more commercial and felt that Hermanus needed to stay a small Fisherman's Village. To this day the locals still refer to it as the village.
Sandbaai lies on the coast at the entrance to the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley. It is the most recently developed and fastest-growing residential area of Greater Hermanus
Zwelihle, designated a black area by the former government, is a residential area that consists mainly of shacks.

You can visit Wonderland Cafe and expect loads of fun.
There are plenty of Beaches, but for the No Go beach days I have made a short video with some ideas of what to do in Hermanus.
This video about what to do in Hermanus was filmed at Wonderland.
History of Hermanus
Hermanus has a long history dating back to the beginning of the 1800’s.
Hermanus Pieters is credited with first “finding” Hermanus. He arrived in Cape Town in 1815, as a teacher and trekked eastwards with the first ox-wagons to Caledon, where farming was the major industry. He taught students from the Boontjieskraal farm in Caledon.
TripAdvisor Percy Tours
During the summer months, he started herding his flocks of sheep and cattle from Caledon in the 1820’s, down the “Elephant Pass”, now known as the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, down to the coast, where he found good grazing and fresh water.
Hermanus Pieters did this each year and word fast got around the farming community that he had discovered good new summer glazing land. Many others started to follow him down the valley to seek lush pastures for their livestock, as well as fishermen, who found that the sea was teaming with fish and the farming families who wished to come to enjoy this new spot during the school summer holidays.
From then on, the area was named Hermanuspietersfontein, which slowly started to grow into a permanent settlement. Today there is a new stairway and walkway that is situated at the exact location where the fresh water waterfall was discovered by Hermanus Pieters.
The first permanent settlers were the family of Mr. J Michael Henn, who in 1857 with 4 wagon carts, 5 sons, 5 daughters and their various husbands and children, pitched camp right next to the waterfall. They started the fishing industry here and built the first permanent buildings along the present day Marine Drive.
By 1891 there were 2 schools, 2 churches, a hotel, many shops, a post office and a busy fishing industry.
In 1902 the postmaster decided to shorten the name to just Hermanus and the village received official municipality status in 1904.
Word spread internationally too, with Harley Street doctors in London, prescribing Hermanus as an ideal location for rest and recuperation with its “champagne air”. A sanatorium was erected over-looking Walker Bay to cater for those in need of such “natural medicine”.
The small fishing village also started to attract holiday makers from around the world and grew steadily.
One delightful Hermanus story is regarding Sir William Hoy, who was the head of the South Africa Railways and Harbour Services. Sir William Hoy and his family enjoyed to holiday in Hermanus during the summer and had a great fondness for the small town.
Plans had already been drawn up for the railway line to be extended from the main line at Botrivier, some 35 kms away, down to the coastal town of Hermanus. As such, a railway station was built ready for the trains to arrive, but Sir William Hoy was concerned that the steam trains would not only pollute the fabulously clean air, but also that the town would suddenly be descended upon by 100’s of tourists and hence spoiling the quaintness of this sleepy seaside town that he loved so much.

Things to do in Hermanus ep 10 Water Sliding at Uilenkraalsmond
Fun at Uilenkraalsmond South Africa. We spent the day waters sliding and made a video of water sliding in slow motion.
One of the best things to do in Hermanus is swimming.
Uilenkraalsmond is a 30 min drive from Hermanus and 10 mintutes from Gansbaai and 90 minutes from Cape Town. It's one of the top Western Cape Camping sites. Most South Africans head for the Cape Town area to camp over December and enjoy the variety of blue ocean beaches in Hermanus and surrounding areas.
The beautiful Uilenkraalsmond, next to Franskraal, (Gansbaai) is the oldest established beach resort in Gansbaai and one of the most popular family holiday destinations in the Western Cape. What is today the caravan-park of Uilenkraalsmond, was already a camping ground 200 years ago
Great weather and great fun.

SUP and Snorkeling Trip in Hermanus with Dusty Feet
Our young adventurers, twin brothers aged 16, were keen to explore some slightly deeper water than our usual spots, so we took them on a tailor made SUP & Snorkel trip.
We took the SUP's from the Hermanus Harbour and paddled to a few cool spots to explore the kelp forests and see the life which is supported within this magical and sometimes spooky environment.
The spiny starfish were amazing, in all shapes and sizes. We saw some incredible soft corals, amazingly colourful array of urchins, a couple of crayfish (west coast rock lobster) and even a few perlemoen (abelone).
All in all a most enjoyable trip!
All footage shot with the GoPro 7 Black in the underwater housing.
