Exploring historic Klaipeda & the spooky Black Ghost
Klaipeda is the oldest town in Lithuania. Located in the Western part of the country it attracts many visitors each year with its charming cobbled streets in the Old Town and the star of the city - The Black Ghost. The atmospheric 2.4 meter tall bronze statue is located by the Old Mill Hotel on the right bank of the river Dane, just across from the old port terminal.
The legend of the Black Ghost saving the city Klaipeda from famine is actually documented in the old manuscripts of the city. For a dramatic experience, visit the Ghost once the sun goes down. It looks very much like a Dementor from Harry Potter. Spooky!!
Another reason to visit Klaipeda is the Curonian Spit. This UNESCO World Heritage site is only 48 km away. The white sand beach of Smiltyne is easily accessible by a ferry. It costs 0.80 Euro cents per person. Take a bike with you and if you are fit enough, cycle 50 km along the beautiful pine tree forests of the Spit towards the fishing village Nida.
You will never be bored in Klaipeda. A number of little magical statues are scattered across the city. Have a fun afternoon trying to find The Magic Mouse, the Cat with a Gentleman's Face, the Dragon and many more cute stone and bronze statues.
Have a stroll along the river Dane and pop into the restaurant on the lower deck of the iconic sailboat Meridianas, the symbol of the city built by the Finnish back in 1948.
The 20 stories K & D Towers built in 2006 represent Klaipeda (Tower K) and the river Dane (Tower D) flowing through the city. The Tower D is a residential building and the Tower K houses a rooftop terrace with fantastic views across the city.
When you find yourselves walking the cobbled streets of the Old Town of Klaipeda, pop into Friedrich Arcade (Friedricho Pasazas) for a cup of good coffee or quality tea.
Just next door to Friedrich Arcade you will find the ‘Crafts Yard’ (Bažnyčių g., Klaipėda 91246, Lithuania). The yellowish building houses a bar ‘Senamiestis’ where you can taste some amazing and rather large ‘cheese fingers’. Pair them up with some dark beer for the ultimate local experience.

Klaipeda, Lithuania [Клайпеда, Литва]
Klaipėda (Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈkɫɐɪˑpʲeːdɐ], About this soundlisten (help·info); German name: Memel, Samogitian name: Klaipieda, Polish name: Kłajpeda), is a city in Lithuania on the Baltic Sea coast. It is the third largest city in Lithuania and the capital of Klaipėda County.
The city has a complex recorded history, partially due to the combined regional importance of the usually ice-free Port of Klaipėda at the mouth of the Akmena-Danė River. It was controlled by successive German states until the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. As a result of the 1923 Klaipėda Revolt it was added to Lithuania and has remained with Lithuania to this day, except for the period between 1939 and 1945 when it returned to Germany following the 1939 German ultimatum to Lithuania and the German–Soviet Union Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.
