Solar Clock, Kuršių Nerija National Park, Lithuania - Unravel Travel TV
The view point on the top of Parnidis Dune is one of the most popular sights in vicinity of Nida. A solar clock was built on the site in 1995 by architect R. Kristapavicius, sculptor K. Pudymas and astronomer R.Klimka. This place was chosen as The Curonian Spit is the only place in Lithuania where sun rises and sets in the water. The original clock finger was 12 m in height (2 m under the ground) and weighted 200 tons. On the 4th December 1999 hurricane Anatoly that devastated the Curonian Spit broke the marble slab but it was later repaired. On bottom half left, one can see signs and symbols of calendar celebrations, which were copied from the ancient wooden runes calendar.
Parnidis Landscape Reserve covers an area of 230 ha consisting of Parnidis Horn, the coastal and the lagoonal sand plains and the remnants area. The reserve is a buffering zone for the Grobstas Strict Nature Reserve from the Nida settlement. It features landscapes of great aesthetic value. Especially exposed is the dune ridge, which is covered with mountain pine on the northern end and moving sand in the south. This is the only place in the national park where drifting dunes remain. Drifting dunes are very sensitive to any disturbance brought by visitors. According to the scientific estimations, each person climbing or sliding down the steep slope pushes down several tons of sand. Due to humans and the wind, the most beautiful dunes in the spit every year get lower and lower. Staff of the national park keeps trying to preserve sand dunes. They mark out separate areas on the Parnidis Dune slope, where visitors aren't allowed to go.
At the foot of Parnidis Dune on the northern side lies the Valley of Silence. It is a peaceful place surrounded by dunes. On the southern part of the reserve lies the Valley of the Death. In 1870-1872 there was a camp for war prisoners. French solders captured by Germans lived there. Mostly they served to plant forests on dunes. Living conditions in the camp were very poor and many prisoners died.
Parnidis Landscape Reserve, also includes the site of a former Airclub Gliding School. It was established in 1933 and closed in 1939, when Germany occupied Klaipeda region. Between 1939 and 1943 it had been used as a school by WWII German military airforce. Nowadays only foundations are left there. A forest grows in the place which the airport once stood. The symbolic hangar arch and memorial stone built in 1979 remind visitors of the former gliding school.
The following rare species can be found in the Parnidis Landscape Reserve: Seaside Centaury (Centaurium littorale), Sea-holly (Eryngium maritimum) and Dark-red Heleborine (Epipactis atrorubens Bessertas). These rare plants, also the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris), which nests here. This is an area of fragile nature. The southern end of the peninsula forms part of the Lithuanian border with Kaliningrad region of Russia.

Lithuania travel guide video - Check out what this baltic country has to offer.
Aiste's home country, and surely a country that everyone should visit. We made this short film to show you what to expect of this baltic state. From skiing, to paragliding, from beach to forest, Lithuania has it all. A special note to the very welcoming people over there, and a big thank you to all our friends.
Some of the locations include Birstonas, Vilnius, Klaipeda, Nida, Druskininkai and many more.
Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic States – and the largest and most populous of them. The country is predominantly flat, with a few low hills in the western uplands and eastern highlands. Forests cover just over 30 % of the country.
Capital: Vilnius
Geographical size: 65 286 km2
Population: 2 921 262 (2015)
A land of wood and water, proud, independent Lithuania (Lietuva) is fast being recognised as one of Europe's gems. Southernmost of the Baltic states, it's a pocket-sized republic that's a nature-lover's delight, yet lacks nothing in urban excitement.
Lithuania's foremost attraction is its stunning Baltic coastline, especially the unique sliver of white sand known as Curonian Spit. Lonely coastal wetlands lure migrating birds by the tens of thousands while inland, lush forests watch over burnished lakes.
The capital, Vilnius, is a beguiling artists’ enclave, its timeworn courtyards, cobbled streets and baroque churches animated by the vibrant, optimistic culture of today.
Further afield, remnants of Soviet times – a disused nuclear missile site (now a museum to the Cold War) and a Soviet sculpture park – are reminders of a dark recent past, while the Hill of Crosses and Orvydas stone garden stand testament to the land's enduring faith.

K. Sklėrius – Lietuvos banko rūmų skulptūra (Kaunas 1970)
Skulptūrinė kompozicija, sukurta 1927–1928 m. ant Lietuvos banko rūmų (architektas Mykolas Songaila su arch. Arnu Funku ir arch. Feliksu Vizbaru) centrinio frontono.

That is one of the most famous Nelson Mandela Quotes, and this incredible structure was designed by South African artist, Marco Cianfanelli. It was created to celebrate the 50-year Anniversary of Mandela’s imprisonment by Apartheid police in 1962. There are 50 columns for each year, and it’s placed in Howick where the arrest too place. You have to see it from the right angle, to see the face of Mandela.
7 - Letting Go…
There is something so ethereal about these wire sculptures created by Robin Wright, a UK Based artist. They are of fairies dancing in the wind, and some are very small and others life-like. They are formed in dramatic poses, and all have dandelions or a part of nature with them.

2 - Are you brave enough?
One of Lithuania’s most celebrated statues, is the Black Ghost found in Klaipeda. Visit this statue on a dreary rainy day, and it will leave you a bit spooked for the rest of the day. Legend says if you befriend the statue, you will have fortune and riches to follow.
1 - Follow your art…
As I said earlier – it’s amazing what people use to create art. Maurizio Savini uses chewing gum to create some very realistic sculptures, but he really doesn’t like it when people ask him if he chewed every piece! He has t assistants that melt the gum down, ready for his creative use
thanks...........
