swarms of fish - montego bay reef
Jamaica Bay - An Urban Park at Risk #Action4Climate competition @Connect4Climate
Some call it The Greatest Urban Park. Jamaica Bay is an
enormous nature reserve in the middle of New York's metropolitan area.
Flanked by an airport, subway system and a four-lane highway, the Bay has a
unique ecosystem, with marshlands vital to many migratory birds and nursing
fish. At the same time it's a hidden gem of recreation for New Yorkers,
with some of the greatest kayaking and fishing just a train ride away.
But Jamaica Bay is facing many challenges. Warming water, rising sea levels
and pollution are making the marsh lands disappear at a rate of 30-40 acres
per year. Hurricane Sandy devastated the area, entirely flooding the nearby
local communities of Broad Channel and the Rockaways. The future is looking
grim for Jamaica Bay's wildlife and people alike, unless action is being
taken.
Determined to not give up and not wanting to passively wait for the next
superstorm to come, local communities are taking measures into their own
hands. Streets and houses are being raised and hundreds of people go out to
clean out debri from the wildlife refuge. Others are busy replanting
marshlands to protect the community from future floods, while restoring the
natural habitat of many species.
Don Riepe and Elizabeth Stoehr of the coastal conversation organization
American Littoral Society, tell us about the work they and an army of local
volunteers do to protect Jamaica Bay and preserve it for future
generations. Dan Mundy Jr. of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers shows us where
and why houses are being raised.
This video aims to inform about Jamaica Bay, a beautiful nature reserve
within easy reach that many do not know about, and to educate about the
problems the area faces while highlighting the solutions of local
communities.
