Sarah Smith: Oh Darling!, SeaStar Inn, Negril, Jamaica 2019
Here's the latest video I filmed in January 2019 at the SeaStar Inn. This is the annual Blues in Jamaica all-inclusive,7-10 day, blues & reggae music vacation put together by Dawn Fairbanks. Dawn invites 5 to 7 top notch musicians from Toronto and surrounding area and approximately 60 vacationers down to the 7 mile long beach of Negril, Jamaica for a 1 week/10 day all-inclusive resort. The musicians performing on this trip were Cheryl Lescom, Sarah Smith, Kim Doolittle, Kathleen Lovett, Chuckee Zehr, Dale Anne Brendon and the only male in the group Bill Durst.
'Blues in Jamaica' was created to join together Canadian Blues professionals and local Negril Reggae artists in the warmth of the Jamaican sun and the inviting settings of resorts and clubs, both beachfront and cliffside. 2019 was the 8th year Dawn has brought this together. She does at least 6 different music vacation trips each winter in the Caribbean.
They also venture out to popular beachside nightclubs in Negril such as Drifters Beach Bar, Bourbon Beach & Roots Bamboo to play, jam, sing, dance and entertain themselves into the hearts of the locals and the souls of her guests from Canada.

Terry Gillespie: Check Out Your Mind, Sea Star Inn, Negril, Jamaica 2016
When Terry Gillespie was young he experienced first hand the music of Miles Davis, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and The Rolling Stones. A question he asks himself every day is: if I was one of my heroes, how would he do it? 'What Would Bo Diddley Do? A song I wrote a couple of years ago was about that exact thing.
Terry doesn't play 'covers' so much as he plays interpretations, allowing the original to be his first influence. His music is Blues based. You could quote Willy Dixon the blues is the root and the rest is the fruit'. In his case the rest is a mix of jazz, R&B, Reggae, Soul and African rhythms, music that caught the popular ear, reinterpreted for the now.
He also writes his own songs. There is already tones of music out there. Given that, the first thing he does is look for a space in what is out-there already, a gab that he can fill with one of his tunes.
Terry loves to lead bands. It is probably what he is most good at. As a band leader he was influenced by performing in orchestras in his early years. He watched his heroes work with their bands. Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus and Howling Wolf all brought out the best in their bands, and he tries to do the same.

Jennifer Hanson: Chain of Fool, Sea Star Inn, Negril, Jamaica 2016
I must apologize for the poor audio but I had to post this video because this woman can sing...and the band backing her includes her sister and brother-in-law.
The youngest of seven children, Jennifer learned to love 30's and 40's era standards at her father Bill's knee. In order to get just a little attention ...in the midst of all those kids, she began singing them for anyone who would listen around 1972, and then after her short, but throat blistering career in rock ’n’ roll, actually got paid to sing the really good stuff around 1993.
Jennifer's reputation for great vocal chops and notoriety for countless public appearances singing national anthems at NHL games, and touring the country with her band, began to attract the attention of a new audience among jazz fans.
Her torchy, seductive vocal style is among the finest in the current generation of jazz singers, while her stage presence is that of the classic generation of singers like Rosemary Clooney, Julie London and Vera Lynn. She's definitely not just another voice in the crowd.
Jennifer's repertoire runs the gamut from the jazz standard songbook and torchy heartbreakers, to a large selection of well loved World War II songs. Jennifer is one of the few singers in the Southeast who sings extensively in French and also in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. She also knows the anthems of at least 10 countries, just in case. Jennifer can also light the place up with Motown, Blues, Country and Pop tunes.
Her first CD, Something Cool, won a 1999 Prairie Music Award (Canada) for best jazz recording.
“how the night people pray,” Jennifer's most recent CD, was written by composer, musician and producer Graham Shaw, one of Canada’s great artistic treasures. Their critically acclaimed collaboration brings together beautifully crafted songs, wonderful musicianship and heartfelt singing that brings the stories to life.

Apologies for the poor audio quality of this song but this performance deserves to go public. It epitomizes the fun and energy of our annual music trip to Jamaica each January. 'Blues in Jamaica 2016' is an annual blues & reggae music trip organized by our fearless leader Dawn Fairbanks. She brings 5 or 6 top notch musicians from Toronto and surrounding area and approximately 60 vacationers down to the 7 mile long beach of Negril, Jamaica for 1 week at an all expense paid resort.
'Blues in Jamaica' was created to join together Canadian Blues professionals and local Negril Reggae artists in the warmth of the Jamaican sun and the inviting settings of resorts and clubs, both beachfront and cliffside. 2016 was the 5th year we brought this together...and our most successful yet!
Combining popular beach nightclubs including the Seastar Inn, Bourbon Beach & Roots Bamboo with the rustic setting of the Samsara and the beachfront Legends Resort, we jammed, sang, danced and entertained ourselves into the hearts of the locals and the souls of our guests from Canada.
The musicians involved in this trip were Canadian legend and lead singer of the Downchild Blues Band Chuck Jackson, Cheryl Lescom, Jerome Godboo, Tyler Yarema, Brant Parker, Terry Gillespie, Owen Brown, Steve Grisbrook and Chuckee Zehr. The special guest singer on this song is Jennifer Hanson from Canada.
2017...we are coming back, bigger, stronger and MUCH more music! Roots, Reggae & Blues.

Rockin' Rich: Respect My Baby, 'Sea Star Inn' Negril, Jamaica 2010
Rockin' Rich (from Rich & The Poor Boys who are from the Niagara Falls region) moonlights as a singing, harmonica bluesman every January when he heads down to Negril, Jamaica for the month to play the blues for the Jamaicans & the tourists. Rockin' Rich is a harmonica player and singer who has performed in Niagara Falls and Toronto since the early 1970's. Rich has had numerous radio, TV and movie appearances. His performance schedule has taken him from street dances to beer halls -stadiums and even to resorts on the beaches of Jamaica. Rich's dynamic stage presence and unique vocals make him a highly sought after front man. His harmonica playing is intense and electrifying with ferocious power and big fat tone. His use of creative phrasings sets him apart from most harp slingers.
When you see Rich and the Poor Boys perform you are immediately aware of the raw energy and passion that emanates from the stage. They inject a vibrant new life into classic blues material while still remaining true to the historic roots of the blues. They are one of the only groups of musicians in Canada to parallel the blues bands of Chicago.
The true measure of a band is when they take the stage and wow every audience and Rich and the Poor Boys is that band. It is not often a band of this caliber comes along so when you're looking for fun, excitement and a rip-roarin' rockin' blues music Rich and the Poor Boys are a must see and should not be missed !!!
