New Bedford, Massachusetts - Travels With Phil
New Bedford is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, it was the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts. New Bedford is nicknamed The Whaling City because during the 19th century, the city was one of the most important whaling ports in the world. The city, along with Fall River and Taunton, make up the three largest cities in the South Coast region of Massachusetts.
New Bedford is the home of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the centerpiece of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. It is the country's largest museum on the subject of whaling and the history of interaction between humans and whales. The museum has the skeletons of a 66-foot (20 m)-long baby blue whale (obtained in 2000), a 35-foot (11 m)-long adult humpback whale (obtained in 1900), and a 45-foot (14 m)-long sperm whale (obtained in 2004) on display. All whales died in New England waters and were cleaned and assembled for display. It is also home to the Whaling Voyage Round the World 1,275 foot long panoramic painting. - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -

What to the slave is the 4th of July?
What to a slave is the 4th of July: Frederick Douglass. Members of the community gather at the Seamen's Bethel in New Bedford, MA to read the 1852 essay
Seaman's Church (1930)
No title.
The Seamen's Bethel where those, who go down to the sea in ships are made to feel at home on Sundays. - New Bedford, Mass. L/S of a building with a couple of cars parked outside. A sign over the door reads: Seamen's Bethel. A man stands in front of the building and moves towards the camera. The Skipper of the church, Chaplain Thurbur, shows the way through life's storms, from his masthead pulpit. Short shot of the vicar who looks like he is preaching on a boat. Throwing out the life line. Low angle shot of the preacher who is standing up on top of the mast - almost in the crows nest. It is quite funny! He is preaching a sermon. Possibly the preacher is thinking of the rock-bound coast of Bandon-by-the-sea, Oregon. (shot missing?) Where jagged rock tomb-stones grimly mark the graves of twenty ships wrecked in a dozen years. L/S of fierce waves crashing against rocks. Various shots of the sea. The rock-bound coast intertitle is repeated as is the first intertitle. L/S of the front of the Seamen's Bethel, similar to the first shot except this time the camera tilts up to show more of the building. Interior of the church. The preacher stands at the front with a bible in his hand - there are fishermen seated in the congregation. The masthead pulpit intertitle is repeated. We see the preacher climbing the mast. Good C/U of him preaching from on high - he spreads out his arms as he speaks. jagged rock tomb-stones intertitle repeated with other shots of rough seas including waves breaking over shipwrecks. M/S of the preacher on the mast.
Note: great stuff of evangelical style ranting and raving preacher.
Paper records state that this was an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 567 of 11/2/1929. As this is an unedited section from a Walter Futter's Curiosities film, I would predict that this film was retitled for use in Pathe Pictorial 567 item The Masthead Pulpit.

SUMMARY
=======
New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park (NBWNHP) is a United States National Historical Park in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and is maintained by the National Park Service (NPS). The park commemorates the heritage of the world's preeminent whaling port during the nineteenth century.
Established in 1996, the park encompasses 34 acres (fourteen hectares) dispersed over thirteen city blocks. It includes a visitor center, the New Bedford National Historic Landmark District, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen's Bethel, the schooner Ernestina, and the Rotch–Jones–Duff House and Garden Museum.
As a National Park, the NBWNHP is rather unusual in that the only properties owned by the NPS are the Visitor Center and the Corson Maritime Learning Center. Rather, the park is a historic district administered under a partnership between the NPS, the City of New Bedford and private building owners to preserve the historic landscapes, structures, and collections and promote research and educational programming associated with the history of whaling. The enabling legislation also established a formal affiliation with the Inupiat Heritage Center in Utqiagvik, Alaska, to commemorate the more than 2,000 whaling voyages from New Bedford to the Western Arctic. The city promotes visitation to the park through advertising that calls it New England's real seaport, as opposed to Connecticut's Mystic Seaport Museum which is a collection of historic buildings and vessels moved from various other locations throughout the region.
Although the famed Whaleman Memorial (commonly called the Whaleman's Statue) is not within the park's boundaries, it is located only two blocks beyond its western boundary at the corner of William and Pleasant Streets in front of the New Bedford Public Library.
