10 Things Not to Do in Italy
Get more Tips here!
Italy… a country bursting with art and history. From pilgrimages to the Vatican to hitting the nightclubs in Milan, Italy sure is full of so many things to see and do that you’ll definitely want to go wild on this holiday. But, don't be too reckless, there are still some things you shouldn't do in Italy.
1) Don't forget to Validate your Ticket
Tickets for regional trains need to be validated, there are some exceptions, but in general terms, you have to validate your ticket before boarding. So find a validation machine, push your ticket into the slot until you hear the stamp being applied and your ticket will be good to go for up to six hours.
2) Don't order latte
Let's see... what do you want? a coffee? or milk? Latte means milk, so if you order a latte, you'll get a glass of milk. On the other hand, if you want a coffee, ask for an espresso, cappuccino... Try to remember that.
3) Don't forget to drive carefully
In Italy there are limited traffic zones. You'll need a permit to go through them and they don't give them to tourists. The ‘Centro Storico’ is usually a limited traffic area. There are no barriers, however, so if you cross over the limits a camera will take a picture of your license plate and you'll get a hefty fine... even if your car is rented.
4) Book in Advance
There are plenty of wonderful monuments to visit, but be clever and think about which ones in advance so that you can buy the tickets online. If not, you'll have to wait for hours to enter some places.
5) Don't Dress inappropriately in Churches
You may not want to miss the opportunity of visiting some of the best churches and cathedrals in the world. But, even if it's too hot, try not to wear shorts or go with bare shoulders. Remember to take some respectable clothes for those visits.
6) Don't Trust your GPS
Yes, I know you have all the maps of the world in your GPS, ok, right, however that won't be very useful for you here. In Italy, there are a lot of towns and villages from different regions with the same name. So, be clear about which is the one you want to head to.
7) Don't Assume You’re Getting Tap Water
In Italy, they prefer to drink bottled water, so if you're in a restaurant and you ask for still water, don't expect them to bring you a glass of tap water. They will bring you a bottle. So, to avoid misunderstandings, just make sure the waiter know which type you mean.
8) Don't eat in the Tourist Spots
This is a pretty standard rule of thumb to follow for most countries, if you’re looking for authentic food, and Italy is definitely no different. If you're visiting a tourist attraction and you want to have some authentic Italian lunch, take some time to go a bit further from the area and you'll get to enjoy some real Italian food.
9) Don't forget the gondolier
Taking a gondola cruise in Venice might be a unique experience for you, but remember that it will also be quite unique for your wallet. One ride can cost upwards of $65 per person or more. However, if you get one of the water taxis used by Venetian locals, you'll enjoy a shorter ride and it will only cost around $5.
10) Don't Misuse the Parmesan
Remember this, in Italy you can eat anything you want and order whatever combinations of food your heart desires. But just make sure that you NEVER EVER ask your waiter for parmesan cheese to sprinkle on your seafood pasta. That’s just wrong. And one last tip, don’t cut your spaghetti with a knife and fork!...
Do you have any other suggestions of things not to do in Italy?

Visit Italy - The DON'Ts of Visiting Italy
Read the Blog on What Tourists Should Not Do When They Visit Italy:
GRAB A WOLTERS WORLD SHIRT
What You Shouldn't Do When You Are in Italy
Visiting Italy is an amazing experience whether you are seeing the Roman ruins throughout the country in places like Rome or Naples, but for all the amazing things you should do in Italy (visit Venice, Florence, Rome, Ravenna, Amalfi Coast, eat until you explode) there are things you DON'T DO when you come to Italy & Here are our 12 things NOT TO DO in Italy when you are traveling Italy.
Filmed in Vicenza, Italy
Copyright Mark Wolters 2016
The Don'ts of Italy
1. Don't expect to get discount prices on fancy Italian luxury brands.
2. Don't eat near tourist sights. You will be ripped off and not get as good of Italian food as you would away from the tourist sights.
3. Don't Tip. They already charge you for service.
4. You Don't have to scream louder to get people to understand you.
5. Don't worry about overdressing, the Italians will always look better than you.
6. Don't just visit Rome and Venice, there is so much more to Italy.
7. Don't share your pizza and make sure you do eat it with your fork and knife.
8. Don't use the fast trains for short distances, they are not worth the significantly higher prices.
9. Don't expect to see spaghetti and meatballs on the menu TOGETHER. They will be there separately, but not together.
10. Don't expect a big breakfast in Italy. Just coffee and a cookie.
11. Don't overpack. You will be limited on space when traveling in Italy so pack accordingly.
12. Don't expect to be served food in a restaurant between 3pm and 7pm.

►More information:
Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification.
Walking distance, you'll find this beautiful, newly designed and built district, with a dedicated metro stop called 3 torri.
The district is called CityLife: it's a residential, commercial and business district close the old city centre of Milan. It has an area of 36.6 hectares.
The development is financed by Generali Group, designed by famous architects Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind.
The Straight One also know as Allianz Tower, The Twisted One also known as Generali Tower and The Curved One which is being built as we speak.
Walking distance again is the the Parco Industriale Alfa Romeo Portello. A 370.000 square meter park in the heart of Milan. Important features are the 2 main little hills.
Go to the Bosco Verticale. 2 Towers built in 2014 by Boeri Studio with a height of 111 metres and 76 metres and contain more than 900 trees on 8,900 square metres of terraces.
Literally next to the bosco verticale are the Italian Google Head Quarters if you're interested. I'd recommend a mini stop here since it's a very beautiful area.
5 minute walking distance is the Uni Credit Tower, another masterpiece of modern architecture located in the most advanced and businessy district of Milan.
Go for Aperitivo at theNavigli near Porta Ticinese! It's a sort of Venice in Milan with water canals and beautiful little houses.
Not only it's a very romantic place but also serves late cocktails in the open, ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET BOTH for only 10 euros ALL INCLUDED!
If you're more into comfy dining, in a quieter place and super delicious a la carte dining, we recommend Piccola Ischia! It's a typical Restaurant from the center south of Italy!
Prices here are super good! The traditional hand made pizza from Naples for 8 Euros! Appetizers for 3 euros! And it's all so good!

Come uscire dalla comfort zone del forse | Francesca Presentini | TEDxSanGiovanniInPersiceto
Quante volte ci è stato detto no? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
L'arte di realizzare l'impossibile: Walter Rolfo at TEDxTrastevere
Magic has always been the principal inspiration for this atypical engineer from Turin.
Thanks to his astonishing talent as a magician, he won many competitions like Italian Championships and, in 2003, he took part to Magic World Championship in The Hague. Nine years later he has been chosen to organize it in 2015 in Italy for the first time.
He is author, presenter and magician in several TV shows and has two world records: he pulled 300 rabbits out of a hat and broke 66 glasses only
with the power of his mind!
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
