Shanti stupa in Ladakh - Jammu and Kashmir - India
Shanti Stupa is a Buddhist white-domed stupa (chorten) on a hilltop in Chanspa, Leh district, Ladakh, in Jammu and Kashmir.It was built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu, Gyomyo Nakamura and part of the Peace Pagoda mission. The Shanti Stupa holds the relics of the Buddha at its base, enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama. The stupa has become a tourist attraction not only due to its religious significance but also due to its location which provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Situated at a height of 3,609 metres (11,841 ft), the stupa is located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Leh - the former capital of Ladakh - on a steep hill facing the Leh Palace.The stupa can be reached by a drivable road or on foot using a series of 500 steep steps to the hilltop.

The Shanti Stupa was built by Japanese Buddhists. It is on a hill in Leh Valley and can be reached by steps (appx 500 steps) or by the road.
The white Stupa is a place for peace and reflection. The walls on the dome inside have Buddha images and there is a small shrine out golden buddha outside the dome.
The view atop from the Stupa is spectacular and the whole Leh Valley is seen from it.

Shanti Stupa is situated at a height of 4267 meters overlooking the Leh city, it gives a panoramic view of surrounding snow capped mountains . Situated at a distance of about 5 km drive able road from the Leh city or one can reach here by climbing 500 steps . The location of Shanti Stupa is such that it is visible from all over Leh city.
It is built as a two level structure, a flight of stairs leads to the first level where a Dharmchakra (as in white strip of Indian national flag) with two deer on each side, features a central image of Lord Buddha in golden colour sitting on a platform turning the Dharmchakra wheel, the second level depicting the birth of Buddha, defeating of devils in meditation and death of Buddha along with many small images of meditating Buddha, all embossed in vibrant colours.
A white dome Stupa (Chorten) built on a Changspa, a steep hill, opposite the Leh Palace different in architecture from the Ladhakhi style gives a magnificent view at sunrise and sunset, it looks more beautiful at night illuminated in the white light. It was built by the Ladakh and Japanese Buddhists, Ladakhis offered voluntary labor, construction started in 1983 and it was inaugurated in August 1991 by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. It was built to promote world peace and prosperity and to commemorate the 2500 years of Buddhism.
Ladakh is a region of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that extends from the Karakoram Range in the north to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent( According to Hinduism Yaksha people born from 5th wife of Kashyapa Rishi). It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet.
Historically, the region included the Baltistan (Baltiyul) valleys (now mostly in Pakistani Kashmir), the entire upper Indus Valley, the remote Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti to the south, much of Ngari including the Rudok region and Guge in the east, Aksai Chin in the northeast, and the Nubra Valley to the north over Khardong La in the Ladakh Range. Contemporary Ladakh borders Tibet to the east, the Lahaul and Spiti to the south, the Vale of Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west, and the trans–Kunlun region of Xinjiang on the north side of the Kunlun Range across the Karakoram Pass in the far north. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture.
In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but since the Chinese authorities closed the borders with Tibet and Central Asia in the 1960s, international trade has dwindled except for tourism. Since 1974, the Government of India has successfully encouraged tourism in Ladakh. Since Ladakh is a part of strategically important Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian military maintains a strong presence in the region.
The largest town in Ladakh is Leh. Almost half of Ladakhis are Tibetan Buddhists and the rest are mostly Shia Muslims. Leh is followed by Kargil as the largest town in Ladakh. Some Ladakhi activists have in recent times called for Ladakh to be constituted as a union territory because of perceived unfair treatment by Kashmir and Ladakh's cultural differences with predominantly Muslim Kashmir.

ABOUT LEH LADAKH
Ladakh is a mountainous region in the disputed northwest Jammu and Kashmir area in north India and in the area known as the Trans-Himalaya, (the lands beyond the Himalaya: Tibet, Xinjiang and northern Pakistan). It's slightly smaller than Scotland, the settled population live between 2700m and 4500m, and nomadic encampments even higher, and it's the largest and the least populated region of Jammu and Kashmir. The people are a mixture of Buddhist and Muslim 50% of each. Buddhists are the majority in the east close to the Chinese border and a slight majority overall while Muslims have the majority in the north and west. Travellers are likely to see more of the Buddhists as the majority of the tourist attractions are in the east and directly related to Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Shanti Stupa Ladakh is placed on the hilltop at Changspa in Ladakh and it was founded in year of 1985.Shanti Stupa was constructed by Japanese Buddhist organization known as The Japanese for World Peace. In1985, Dalai Lama inaugurated the Shanti Stupa Ladakh . The idea around the construction of Shanti Stupa Ladakh is to celebrate 2500 years of Buddhism to encourage World Peace. Every year,visitors comes to Ladakh in order to visit these stupa.Sunset and Sunrise is just imagine, your eyes will always in search of these scenery.Original idea was stated by Nichidatsu Fujii in 1914. The mission of Nichidatsu Fujii was to build Peace Pagodas and temples over the world and try to save Buddhism back in India. shanti stupa ladakh1 Shanti Stupa Leh start developing in April 1983 under the management of Kushok Bakula and Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura from New Delhi, member of the Minority commission of Govt of India, former statesman and former international diplomat of the Republic of India. The project was built with the help of Ladakhi Buddhists, who offered voluntary labour, and Japanese Buddhists, who consider India as the sacred birth place of the Buddha. Then prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi, approved the construction of a vehicular road to the stupa in 1984. The state government also provided some financial assistance for the construction of the Shanti Stupa.The 14th and current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso inaugurated the Shanti Stupa in August 1991. Another key importance in the construction of Shanti stupa, peoples from Japan and the ordinary people of India has contributed money. Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura came to India in the year of 1976 and then he reached in Ladakh in 1979,who was invited by the Buddhist people of Ladakh.These people requested him to make Shanti Stupa.

Due to the inspiration and efforts of Rev. Gyomo Nakamura, a japanese buddhist monk, the Shanti Stupa was built by Japanese and Ladakh Buddhists. Construction works started in 1983 and in 1991 it was inaugurated by H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Cyatso.
